So Herb Bauer is the only decent full blown outdoor shop in all of Fresno. Yes, their prices tend to be overly ridiculous and I usually only window shop and then make my purchases online for way cheaper, however, they do have good deals some of the time. Their selection is quite good and they often have things I cannot find anywhere else. It is also a fun place to find new products. Now for the customer service. Their checkout procedure and return policy are quite medieval and they never have enough people working the counter. I will say this though, most everyone in the store is very friendly and willing to lend a hand. The fishing department is nice and Chris is incredible, such a great guy and very knowledgeable. Their manager in the shoe department is also great and will spend all the time in the world to make sure you get a good pair of hiking boots. Even though their prices are about 20% higher than online the customer service is well worth the extra money for purchases like a pair of hiking boots. Now about their gun counter, they have a great selection of firearms but their selection and price on ammo is completely poor and outrageous. Again, window shopping is the name of the game. The quality and professionalism of the guys behind the counter is hit and miss, two of them (one with a ponytail) are fantastic but a few others are just down right rude and foul mouthed. I was talking to one guy about an assault rifle and he was cussing up a storm about this and that. These are the ones that only care about making a sale and getting you off the counter so they can try to make a sale with the next poor sucker in line. All in all a great place to look and maybe make a few purchases, still thankful to have a local shop that is well stocked so I do try to support them when its reasonable. Overall good customer service minus the few jerks that work there.

Horrible Customer Service ... guns are WAY overpriced ... every time you talk with anyone in the guns department they are rude and almost seem you are bothering them. Never been anywhere and seen people this rude. Now in other parts of the store and at checkout they seem a little better and somewhat helpful ... this is based only on the guns dept. Plus their guns and almost all accessories are SO overpriced its crazy ... I just inquired about a Beretta shotgun the other day that MSRPs on Berettas own website for $895 ... they are selling it for $1000 even ... now keep in mind this is price on the manufacturers website ... which is NEVER the actual cost to the customer in a retail store ... everywhere I read these guns sell for no more then $750-800 ... and they want $1000 for it!!!Also if you look at all their accessories they sell (and Im sure this goes for all other items in this expensive store) you will be surprised ... even their ammo is ridiculous. After my last visit this week and seeing how much they GOUGE you on price with their products and dealing with Complete A-Holes (the guys in the gun dept. are the most disgruntled employees I have ever seen, they are just pissed to even talk to you or help you, and they make you feel VERY stupid if you are not a seasoned pro) every time I will NEVER go back again! As long as I have other local gun shops like Breco Gun Shop etc. etc. there is NO reason to go to Herbs for anything. They have Tons of stuff and if you are in need of something they may have it but you will have to deal with Rude workers and Way Overpriced items (at least the gun dept. anyway).Shop here at your own risk!

I went to Herb Bauer to get my hand gun safety certificate. When I asked to take this in the gun department I was asked if I purchased the gun at the store. I told them I had not as I was receiving my first hand gun as a gift from my father and needed my certificate. They informed me that store policy was not to allow individuals to take the test who had not purchased a gun from the store because they could "run out of certificates". I mentioned that I had family who had purchased guns from the store in the past. The employee reiterated their policy that it they could refuse to give the test out because they might run out of certificates because they only get so many. They make no mention of this policy on their website. I was not presented with this policy in writing. I informed the employee that he was guaranteeing I would never be a customer of the store. That didnt phase him at all and mentioned other gun stores in the area after I asked him. They were all closed for the day so I went home without getting my certificate and had to explain to my 6 year old, who was with me, what happened. I did get my certificate the next date from the Range in Fresno which has far better service and reviews and I recommend going over there. I will never purchase anything from this store and I recommend avoiding at all costs and finding somewhere else to purchase anything they sell. If I could have rated them with zero stars they would get a zero.

Cant believe a business can be any worse. Several years ago I went to a local sporting goods store to purchase shotgun shells they had on sale at a great price. When I arrived, the same day the ad broke, they informed me they had sold out. They stated someone from Herb Bauers had come in that morning and purchased every box that was on sale. Finding this hard to believe, I went to Herb Bauers to see for myself and discovered they actually did. I asked if I could purchase the shells for the ad price and they simply laughed! It was clear to me ethical conduct does not exist at Herb Bauers. So...many years later, as in last weekend, I return to Herb Bauers to look at three different types of shotguns they had in stock as I am interested in purchasing a new shotgun. I need to be clear here, I will purchase from ANYONE BUT Herb Bauers. They had them in stock and I simply needed to shoulder them to assist with my decision. The service at the gun dept, or lack of, was painful. After around 15 minutes, no one even acknowledged I was there. Some poor guy was there trying to get some type of receipt documentation for a gun he purchased there awhile back and the salesmans response was basically, its not his problem. I finally had to nearly beg to get service. WOW! I cant believe this place is still in business. Now I wont even go there to look. Its a complete waste of my time.

Let me start by saying my rating is purely based on the selection/prices compared to the rest of the shops in town. Although none of the stores in this town carry affordable components with a variety of compatibility for people who like to build bikes slightly out of the ordinary (especially "fixies" as theyre loosely known now), this one is in the top 3 in my opinion, the top 2 being rubber soul and cycle path (I also rate them as the best overall which mostly includes customer service and component/bike selection) Anyways, herb bauer cycling is probably great in terms of selection for bmx riders, but its just ok for everyone else. Anytime Ive needed a component, I check with them but ultimately end up buying on amazon because they dont have a great selection for custom builds. Lastly, the customer service is like half of them are employed at a skate park. Ive been there about 15-20 times over the past year or two, and Id say about half are decent employees (2 of the 3 are knowledgeable and helpful, and 1 is friendly but doesnt ever know what Im talking about when it comes to bike components). Overall, the employees could be way better, and the merchandise could be more diverse. They stock parts that cost double of what you could easily obtain online that are the same quality. Really, all the stores in town could carry better/more affordable parts
