In over 10 years of living in the DMV and shopping at many Safeway stores, hands down this one at City Vista (5th and L Street NW) is the worst. Sadly, it is in my neighborhood where Ive lived for 8 years. I used to go here regularly as it was the only option. Now, there are more groceries so I avoid this particular one as much as I can. I have called management, written letters, posted comments, and written reviews periodically for years. There have been little to minor improvements in service and reliability. Tonight was no exception. First, many of the staff are extremely rude and sometimes unprofessional. Lines are always long because they do not open enough registers. The layout is poorly designed, so people line up into the aisles and block shelves so shopping is like a maze. There are never enough baskets or carts. They are all in the garage and register and not brought to the front quickly. There is a lot of observable theft. Overall I do not enjoy shopping here, and speaking to my neighbors and reading their comments/reviews, many agree with my assessment.

My main complaint here has got to be the service. Seriously horrid. I had bad service in three instances. 1. I was looking for the milk section but I have bad eyesight and couldnt really see the section markers on the ceiling, so I asked a staff member who was stacking cans on the shelves where it could be. He simply told me "Im new here maam youll have to find someone else." He didnt even have the decency to get someone for me, I others have done in other groceries. I know it sounds like Im being lazy but... 2. The lady at the counter was just not interested in what she was doing. She seemed bored out of her mind which is fine, but why make us suffer for it? Because she had some sort of personal dilemma she wasnt moving as she should have with checking in items and so the line was slow. 3. When I finally got off the line a guard had the gall to ask me to check my back when he hadnt asked the ones who came before me. DO I LOOK LIKE A THIEF? Just a horrid experience and I will not be going here again.

You would think that customer service would come first at a grocery store. This place is MAJOR exception. I arrived at the customer service desk at exactly 8:55PM on 1/16/2013. When I was filling out the Western Union form, the customer service agent said "We are closed if you are trying to do a Western Union payment". I pulled out my cell phone and it was 8:55, and looked at the woman who was in charge of the Western Union and she said "Im off and I am leaving". She would not process the Western Union when they are supposed to be open for 5 more minutes. I cannot understand how this Safeway keeps these rude and lazy employees on the payroll. This was some of the worst customer service I have ever received/experienced. Simply denied service when they were open. It is sad that after all these bad reviews this Safeway has still not done nothing about it! Safeway needs to bring in someone to monitor this store and see what is really going on here.

It sucks because this is the closest grocery store to my job, but I will force myself to never go here ever again. Wasted a huge part of my lunch hour to buy a single item, due to not enough lanes being open and only 3/8 of the self-checkout machines being operational. And then, when I finally get to a machine, it cant find my club card. The overseer of the self-checkouts said it takes 10 weeks to enter a new club card into the system, which seems reasonable given that it takes about 60 seconds to enter your name, address, email address and phone number into a database. Then when I asked if I could borrow a card, she insisted that I could not use her card to gain the discount either. "Never mind." Sorry to have bothered you for customer service, maam. My time is worth much more than $3-4 in savings. Ill be shopping Harris Teeter at 1st & M NE before work instead.

This location has multiple problems. They are constantly out of things like chicken, vegetables,, and other very essential things. The quality of the produce is generally average to below average. But by far the worst part about shopping at this location is the lines. It is amazing that they cant figure out peak hours or manage the self check outs. The lines are often over 30 minutes long and average percentage for working self check outs is around 30-40. There are other general issues such as the meat and seafood counter not having regular hours. I once asked a manager when the counter closes, the manager asked if it was open and I said "no," and the manager told me "well then its closed." Awesome.

This is by far the worst grocery store I have ever shopped at. Ive lived in DC for three years and have never seen such apalling and overpriced food, with the most atrocious staff! Produce is rarely stalked and often has visible mold on it. Dairy section is often never stalked. Meat is one or two days away from expiration date and often has a fowl odor. Aisles cannot fit more than one cart down them. Furthermore, Ive never seen more than three lanes open at this location. The rest of the staff is socializing at the customer-service desk, hiding, or just aloof. Not sure Ive ever seen a manager either! Safeway headquarters needs to preform an audit of this facility ASAP and fix these problems!

Good: 1. Free parking, and I have yet to have any cashier enforce the $5 minimum to get validation. 2. Since its a newer location, its generally clean (except for the mens bathroom). 3. Have most items youll need in a pinch. 4. Open 24 hours. Bad: 1. After 10pm the self checkout lines are closed. Now only one register is open at that time! 2. Tend to struggle with maintaining enough inventory. While they sell what I need and want, half the time a few items are wiped or on the shelf. 3. Bathrooms are downright disgusting. Almost as bad as a truck stop or gas station.

I will also say that I ran into the "already punched out" excuse. The customer service at the location is very "iffy." Ive been accommodated by workers and managers sometimes, and other times Ive encountered incompetent managers and employees. But this is a common occurance in most businesses Ive visited in this town. Everything from Grocery stores to retail stores show the same apathy. I know Im asking a lot for DC to be just a little friendly like Charlotte, NC, but at least stores can have some sort of resemblance of customer service! Color me Irritated

This is my favorite Safeway! I consider myself to be a store favorite. Ive built friendly liaisons with the cashiers, stockers, security guards, Wells Fargo bankers, and Starbucks staff. They know my name and my face and its pleasant to be asked where I was if I havent shopped in 2 weeks. I love the set up of the store and the location. Sometimes Ill go to Chipotle or Sweet Green next door and then pick up a few things at Safeway. Sometimes its all about the customers demeanor, --- If you want to be smiled at, sometimes you have to do the smiling! ;-)
