Definitely one of the last great neighborhood hardware stores. After the True Value stores closed in both Montclair and Glenview, I happened upon the Ace Hardware at Grand Lake and was very pleasantly surprised both by the size and variety of the inventory as well as the expertise of the staff. Over the past few years, I have been back frequently and I am happy to find most of the same friendly employees. While I may not know them by name, I remember them as "the electrical guy," "the plumbing guy," "the fastener guy," etc. Home Depot may be bigger, cheaper and open later, but I never get anywhere near the level of service as I do at this Ace location. Only OSH in Berkeley can beat it for sheer variety of inventory, but still falls short on customer service. I will also note that, despite the shortage of parking, I do see many of my neighbors here as well so it would seem that mere proximity is not the only thing going for this store. It should also be mentioned that, on the rare occasion when they didnt have the part I needed, "the electrical guy" was quick to recommend another epic local merchant in Berkeley, Al Lashers, for electronic supplies...but that is for another review. To sum up...if you are looking for the cheapest price (although you may have to buy 12 screws when you only need 1), you know know exactly what you need and where to find it, then Home Depot is your place. If you want any kind of help, instruction, recommendation or specific assistance, then check out the Grad Lake Ace Hardware store.

Have been to this store several times in the past and can usually find what I need. If I need help there are always plenty of staff to help me special order something. They seem to have everything that I need for all my DIY needs. Also, what I really like is that just a little bit further down the same street they have a fully equipped Nursery & Garden Shop. Wow! Not many of the smaller retailers are able to handle all of my hardware needs + give me things for my yard and deliver incredible shubs, palm trees, flowers, or whatever I need for my yard!! Highly recommend Grand Lake Ace Hardware and Nursery.

Piedmont Ace has been selling United Bio Lubes BPL - Bio Penetrating Lubricant since 2004! This Ace Hardware might actually be my favorite place in the Bay Area. They have anything Ive ever needed, even down to non-hardware store type things like kitchenware and a headlight for my 60s Ford. The staff is genuinely helpful, know what theyre talking about, and are easy to find but dont bug you. Their garden center next door is nice as well. The only thing I know of that they dont have is any lumber, other than a couple small sheets of plywood and pieces of trim.

Having recently moved to the neighborhood, I was wary of shopping at a local hardware store for household goods and tools. Dont small shops like this have a limited selection and astronomical prices? Ive been pleasantly surprised by Ace Hardware. Huge selection of every household item youd need and better prices than Bed Bath and Beyond or similar chain stores. The people who work here are super friendly and helpful to boot. Will be a regular customer for sure.

This place is closed like a third of the time that I come. Edit: more like half the time. I dont know how i manage to allow myself to be duped so often. Maybe because this is my neighborhood hardware store, and I come when the sun is high in the sky. My brain, for whatever reason, doesnt throw up red flags when i head out to the store at 3:45. It doesnt occur to me that i should double check the store hours in the middle of the day.

Pretty much the platonic ideal of an urban hardware store; Im subtracting one star, though, on account of the super-pushy clerk who just could not accept the fact that I did not want LED light bulbs, and yes I know that they come in different colors, and yes I know that they are more efficient, and can you please get out of my face and let me buy the damn regular bulbs already?!?

I love that they are a local hardware store with plenty of staff waiting to serve you. On most occasions I got great advice. On a couple of occasions some of the staff were not knowledgeable. Some of them have been a little brusk, including a supervisor, I believe. Overall, it is my go-to place for hardware and advice.

Fantastic employees that really enjoy helping customers. When ever I call for a part for my project they would match it up as close as possible or gives me a reference place. These folks loves their job and it shows with the business. Dont worry about the guy with cap out from panhandling, hes harmless.

I shop here frequently. The staff are always really helpful, and willing to advise me. I almost always find exactly what I need, with advice about how to use or install the tool or part. Highly recommend! The parking lot is often full, so look for nearby street parking if convenient.

not sure what the other reviewers experienced, but every time i go into the ace on grand i have many people willing to help me. also, it has the feeling of a small community hardware store in which everyone cares about one another. they have most everything you many need too.

Probably have what most people need in Hardware, but the store employees seem to have an aggressively anti-help attitude. Can walk in, will pass 3 or 4 employees chatting among themselves (not about hardware), they will NOT ask you if you need any help.
