Pretty cool store. I went in to look at tents and an employee offered to help. I had a pretty terrible interaction with him, but it turned out ok in the end. Im still kinda turned off by the idea of going back to Summit Hut because of it. I asked this employee what Summit Huts return policy is, and the employee got pretty upset. He started asking me if I wanted, "to be that guy who buys something just to return it," and told me, "Yea, if you want to be a jerk, use something, and then return it, you can. Is that who you are?" I silently fumed for a bit while thinking, "I had better do what I came here to do and get a good look at these tents before getting into it with this guy about the way he handled that question." So I looked at a couple of tents. After that, I said to this guy, "I must have made you pretty upset with that question," and asked if a lot of people take advantage of the stores return policy. He told me that was the case, and that he, "just wanted to be super honest with me." Ok, thats fine. I learned from my visit that day that Summit Hut is a local business with two locations, and that some people take advantage of their return policy. I did not know that going in, and in hindsight, I think I see where he was coming from with his response to my question. However, that was not the appropriate way to deal with my question.

When I moved to Tucson, I bought over $2000 worth of hiking equipment from summit hit and I was very happy with almost all of my purchases. All my purchases, save one. In December I bought a $400 insulation jacket due to being in a rush without doing much research. I only used it a few times, however, I knew after a few uses it was not for me. It was not breathable, too big, and too heavy. After reviewing the return policy, it clearly stated that I could return the item as I was not 100% satisfied with it. When I went to return it, the manager have me such a hard time! He kept going on about how lenient of a return policy their store had compared to others and kept asking again and again if I was sure I wanted to return it. The killer was that this jacket was apparently so unpopular, that they had to put it on sale for 50% in order for anyone to even buy it!! Due to this fact, he tried to cheat me out of $200 and only refund me the discounted price! I was not going to let that happen and got my full refund, but the whole encounter really put me off from shopping at summit hut in the future. Beware of being hounded when you return items and make sure you keep the receipt!! They will try to cheat you.

Im a native who has purchased successfully at Summit Hut before. Ive spent hundreds, maybe thousands, of my hard earned dollars there over the years. Today I went in and bought $80 worth of topos and books. All cool. Then the nasty happened. I went out of the store to get into my car and some kid came out and asked to see my purchases. Seemed that another kid had forgotten something when I paid for them and this triggered their shoplifting "beeper." Now I have nothing against these kids who are the same folks Ive always dealt with. The problem comes when they fail and then I get to stop and prove Im a good guy. Course the receipt was right there but the staffer didnt want to see that. Weird. Makes me wonder who is training these folks. Other than that I have no complaints. Great materials, etc. Why have I shopped there for years when the prices are not that cheap?

Cool selection, friendly enough folks, but insane prices. $70 for a pair of pants. $22 for a single pair of quick-dry undies. $200 sunglasses. $14 for a hairband. Even the clearance stuff is a joke. When I mentioned the prices to an employee, she turned rude fast and told me that no one else carries their brands (Columbia, Patagonia, Buff, Merrell, ect). Uh, yeah, loads of places do. And for less. Im not saying Im looking for Wal-Mart prices and I do appreciate quality, but prices need to be reasonable and whoever is managing the prices here is either getting really bad deals from their vendors, or marking things up because they think they can. I wish I could support this small business, but for now theyre where I go to find cool things Ill order on Amazon later for half the price.

Good products, very difficult on returns of defective products (not friendly about it). They do not keep purchase information and say it is for "privacy" reasons. Go to REI (I hate to say, since I like to support local), they will honor heir products and customers. In my case, it was a pair of smart wool socks. I didnt have the receipt after 3 months, so they said to mail it in to smart wool (which I will end up doing). At least at REI they dont push you off to the manufacturers web site and get very weird about exchanging them in the store. You would think at these prices they would honor their products and customers instead of saying good luck.

I always get gear and clothes here prior to my backpacking trips. I purchased several items recently, and, one of which, was found to be too large. Yes, I should have tried it on at the store, but it was my regular size. This item just happen to run on the large side, so I went to return it in less than 24hrs. The regular staff that helped was very nice and understanding. Then I had to wait for the manager to do the return transaction, and he was completely rude. He even went as far as to make a smug comment that basically tells me I am not welcome in that store. So, I will not go to Summit Hut anymore.

I donated money to Camp Wildcat on my tax returns. Summit Hut was working with Camp Wildcat and offering anybody that donated money a free Hydroflask. I went in a couple days ago (late June) and spoke to a manager, Alex, who informed me that the promotion ended in April. I left, a little bummed but I understood. I got an email the next day from Alex saying he spoke to the general manager and that they wanted to offer me a hydroflask even though it was after the promotion date. Talk about exception customer service! Great manager! Great local business!

Outstanding selection and help. We know nothing about hiking so we stopped in for shoes and help. We got Ben...super hiker dude. Hands down the best experience Ive had in any store for a long time. Great selection, the prices are reasonable, but the the help is outstanding. Plenty of help, but if you go for hiking help, ask for Ben. The man knows his trails, clearly spends time out there and likes to share info. THIS IS WHY YOU BUY LOCAL FOLKS! You cant get this kind of help online or at a chain store :-)

Its an okay store if your into hiking, camping, or Rock climbing specifically. I was looking for hunting camo, and this place has nothing remotely related to hunting. You ever see the typical white Midwestern transplant 55 year old new ager who likes to "connect with nature" before compiling a comprehensive list of reasons to vote for Bernie Sanders? Well, this is probably where they got their outfit.
