Ive been wanting to check out this place for quite a while. Unfortunately, I happen to work the same hours that Helliesen is open - but I finally got off early and decided to check it out. Im disappointed that they arent open a tad later or for a few hrs on Saturday AM. Im building some raised garden beds and decided to check out my options. Upon walking in, I was greeted by the amazing smell of popcorn! Theyve got a little machine with some delicious popcorn to snack on! Major plus for this guy - I love that stuff. Anywho - back to the lumber - my options were Douglas fir-larch, pressure treated lumber, and cedar. The douglas fir-larch is around $0.65 / LF. Pressure treated was about $1.65/LF, and cedar was around $3.30/LF. Based on the fact that I would have to seal the regular wood, I decided to go with 12 pressure treated. Im a fan of local business, but prices have to be competitive. In this case, prices for a 2x8x12 was about 15% higher than at one of the big box retailers. In general, that seems like a resonable premium that you may pay here over the home improvement juggernauts. I was assuming that Helliesen only sold lumber, but they have quite a few other items. You can find a lot of woodworking tools and fasteners, safety items, as well as basic construction materials - but, mostly things that are wood related. If you like supporting local business and dont mind a small premium, Helliesen is a great option for lumber in Yakima. If they were open on saturdays, Id buy a lot more lumber from here!

I see that one person is complaining about the prices at Helliesen Lumber. Having been a building contractor for almost 40 years, I would never go anywhere else for material. Perhaps the complainer is a fan of the twisted, cracked and warped material available at the big box stores in town. I am not. Helliesen does such a huge volume of business that their material is fresh and straight and of much better quality that anywhere else in town. Perhaps I COULD save a few dollars by driving another five miles and fight the weekend warriors at the big box stores and try to find decent material that hasnt been handled improperly. But that is NOT worth my time or my money.

I moved to Yakima in the early 70s and found myself involved with the Yakima Home Builders Association. In those first impression years Harry, Chet, and the stockers always had what I wanted and the quality was tops. Today Im somewhat back in the business in Spokane and havent found a lumber yard equal to Helliesens. Ill stop in on my next visit to Yakima and perhaps Ill put an order in for a truckload of doug fir dimensial
