I want to be upfront. I absolutely love REI and all their products and their informative and helpful staff. I have bought many different items from REI and love and use all of them. EXCEPT all that changed today. I simply wanted to return a pair of SPD pedals that I had bought less than one year ago. I simply am not satisfied with my purchase and wanted to return them. According to the 100% satisfaction guarantee policy I am able to return any product within one year of the purchase. The employee, lets call him "K", "helping" me first stated that my dissatisfaction is not a reason and that he could not return them. I was flabbergasted I thought he was joking and actually chuckled. He was however serious and kept staring at me. I then explained that I am not satisfied with the pedals and will look at getting another pair. He then said he would report my file to headquarters and after rolling his eyes and muttering something under his breath he finally refunded my items. I was taken aback. I have never had a bad experience with REI and this one experience with this individual left such a tarnish on such a great company. It will be some time before I return to this establishment. I was so confused because I did not think I did anything wrong and yet this employee was giving me such a hard time and threatened me. Can anyone give me some insight? Did I do anything wrong or is there something I am missing?

I have visited REI several times before and always have had good experiences. They have a great selection of outdoor equipment. Their prices are a little steep, but you will frequently find items on sale for decent prices. Some people will argue that you can find better prices online, and they are right. However, you cannot match the level of service I received while there this past weekend. I purchased a pair of Salomon hiking boots from them last year. While they were my favorite boots, the waterproofing failed over the past few months. I figured they were close to a year old, and it was time for a new pair. A friend of mine mentioned "theyre under warranty, REI will exchange them". Sure enough....I walked out with a new pair of boots and only paid for the difference in price ($9)! I had used my friends membership to look up my receipt, but I think I will purchase my own after this great experience. NOTE: Another review said that the cost of the membership is $50, while it is only $20. I can say I received plenty of help from several staff members, and none of them had any idea whether I had a membership or not.

Closest REI to Virginia Beach at the moment (ours is coming spring 2016 whoohoo!) so we stop in whenever we are passing through Richmond. Typically more expensive than purchasing online but sometimes have a good sale going. Worst case, go jn and see what you like/what fits and then find a better deal online. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable. The person that said you dont get help unless your a member is absolutely 100% incorrect. Being an REI member has nothing to do with the help you get in store. REI is a co-op so their $20 (not 50) membership is lifetime. You also get 10% back every year on the things you buy if youre a member, so basically if you spend $200 in one year there, it pays for itself. They also frequently run member deals where you get a $20 gift card if you spend $100, so again buying the membership pays for itself in just one transaction. REI is definitely one of the bigger box stores so dont forget your local outfitters as well!

This REI location is small compared to some of the other locations. If you need something for outdoors, then this is the place to come. They have bikes, hiking gear, water bottles, etc. Theres clothing to fit the outdoor activity of your choice. Choose from name brands REI, North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, Merrill, etc. The staff are very friendly and helpful. You can order online from the store or home and have shipped to the store in lieu of paying the shipping charges. If you order online and the size isnt correct, then you can return or exchange at any local REI. If you join the REI Co-op then you get special discount offers and you get 10% back off of regularly priced items purchased the following year in a dividend check to use at the store or online. Thats right! You get paid to buy things you want or need for your outdoor activity. I highly recommend REI to my friends and family.

When Ive had any detailed questions, the employees have always made suggestions of who to talk to by name or suggested different books they carry. I dont expect everyone to have tested everything in the store unless REI allows such things. I have always tested products to see how it fits my situation. With such a wonderful return policy, how could you ever go wrong?... Ive been coming here since the grand opening. REI is my guilty pleasure and reliable source for gear. If you cant figure out on your own what you like in a years time, perhaps outdoor activity isnt for you.

Staff is so-so. Its really dependent on the person. Generally knowledgeable but care level is very drastic. Goods sold are good obviously, its a primo store. Biggest issue si the STOCK. Things go out of stock, and stay out of stock. IE, you have tons and tons of ENO hammocks, but not even one set of straps for them. HOW do you even get to that point? The store is a bit of an oddball too. It feels so different from other locations. A little bit like this store was made to just sell North Face/Patagonia apparel, and bikes.

Went in to return a pack and expected to receive the same great service I did when I got my pack and boots but no I got the exact opposite. The cashier was rude the entire time about me returning the pack, she was very short and cut me off twice while I was explaining my reason for the return. Seems they are only nice when you are spending money even though I did turn around and leave with more gear. I dont plan on ever shopping at this REI again.

I hate REI they are the epitome of a chain store. Unless you are a "member" they cannot help you with anything. They dont even try and provide customer service unless youve spent the $50 fee to become a member. My husband had Solomon shoes that ripped and bc Rei and Solomon have a partnership REI shouldve replaced the shoes but bc he wasnt a member they wouldnt assist him! Please shop at local outfitter stores or buy directly from vendors!

Excellent staff. Excellent brand names. Pretty good selection of gear (good climbing gear as well which I wouldnt have expected). Competitive prices as well. Joined the Co-op and have their credit card as well. If you need help theres always a free employee you dont have to run a mile to find. The gear they sell will go the extra mile as well (torture tested it with tons of camping and hiking in subzero conditions).

Went to purchase water/sport sandals for my daughter. Completely ignored by 2 staff. Standing right infront of me, holding a 115.00 pair of shoes. I had to ask for help. He got them, pushed box at me and disappeared. Never checked on us. Bought them and found check out girl curt and un welcoming. I have never been treated so poorly there and i spend a lot of money at REI.
