Great Southern Tattoo has been an Alexandria staple for many years. It is family owned. Sandy and her husband, Charlie, strived and achieved an image for tattooing that broke the negative stereotypes and clichés the tattoo industry had earned in past decades. Sandy worked hard to help promote a positive image from tattoos and tattoo shops. Sandy made such a wonderful and lasting impact on the local community and tattooing. Sandy was a very gifted tattoo artist. She handed down her techniques to the other artists in the shop. She strove for proper tattooing, tattoo aftercare and clean tattoo practices. Sandys legacy lives up to what she left behind. Great Southern is still by far and away the best tattoo shop in Northern Virginia. Virginia is the only state where if you are tattooed you can donate blood after initial healing. Virginia has state regulated stringent sanitation practices. Charlie makes for wonderful company and is sagely. He sits by the door to greet and speak with everybody he meets. He is warm and kind. Sandy did my Frank tattoo and Chris did my forearm tattoo of peacock feathers and flowers. He understood what I wanted and did an amazing job. I have seen lots of work by this shop, lots of locals get ink here and I have never seen a bad tattoo. Honestly, if you wanted a bad tattoo, they probably would suggest you get that bad tattoo done somewhere else (just speculation I wouldnt know for sure).

My mom and sister recently came home with some of the worst tattoos Ive ever seen come out of a professional shop and some dude named Drew should be fired. He took advantage of my family because they dont know much and charged them $100 each, when he must have spent less than 30 minutes on each piece. Theyre simple designs not much larger than a half dollar, but theres multiple blowouts, lines that dont connect, lines that cross where they shouldnt, and the color sucks. Like, dude cant follow a stencil and theyre going to have wicked scar tissue. And apparently he was rude to them, although I dont have proof of that, but I wouldnt doubt it since he obviously doesnt take his professional life very seriously. This is coming from someone that has spent over 20 hours in various tattoo parlors. Theyve had good experiences with Jimmy in the past, but Drew sucks.

I went here for my first and only tatoo. I must confess that I didnt do much research and was referred to them by a friend who actually went with me and got a tatoo of his own. My father had passed away and I wanted to get his signature as a memorial. For a relatively small, uncolored tattoo, it was extrememly expensive. More importantly, after a few weeks I noticed a large red dot appear in the center of one of the letters. After a trip to the doctor, I discovered that the red dot was in fact a popped blood vessel that had occurred from the tatoo. Since this will be my only tatoo, and especially since it was very sentimental, I am extrememly disappointed that it will be forever flawed.

I like the shop and the people they are very friendly, but way to over priced for my liking and for other peoples too. All I got was Live Laugh Love around my wrist with 3 tiny symbols and its nothing fancy no color just outline and its all black and they charged me almost 200 dollars for it I went to the tattoos shop down the street and they said I was suckered in and it should have only costed around 90 dollars

I have been going there for years I even took my daughter for her first tattoo. Sandy and Charlie are great and have good knowledge...of tattoos..they also have a shop in College Park Md I have sent many people to the tattoo shop not one complaint! I dont always get tattoos but when I do Great Southern Tattoo is where I go! Stay tattoed my friends!

Doug from the Great Southern Tattoo Company did a tattoo on my forearm of my colleges logo, including a rather difficult color match. He did a very good job at a reasonable price, the tattoo looks just like the logo on my colleges website. The place is clean and professionally operated. Good job Doug.
