When you first step in, this underlit, dingy shop seems more like a Hoarders outpost than a bookstore. The couple who own and manage the store periodically erupt into loud shouting matches with each other, and with an assortment of regular hangers-on, as well as yelling at the winos and vagrants (who infest downtown Salt Lake City) who attempt to come into the store to pee, or take shelter from the elements. Once you make your way into the stores larger-than-it-seems interior, if you are looking for science fiction paperbacks, you will find a really, really good selection. Two lengthy sections of shelving offer quite a variety of books from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. If you are seeking the more obscure DAW titles, youll probably find them. One thing to note is that a lot of the books are in good condition, but fewer are in very good or like new condition. But at $1 - $2 each, whatever you pick up is a real bargain (especially compared to the $4.95 per book price being charged by Eborn Books, the more presentable book store a block up the street). There is a section of the store devoted solely to vintage porn.....I didnt explore it, but if thats your thing, then youll want to check it out. Also, there are large sections of shelving for general fiction, as well as nonfiction. Utah Book and Magazine is well worth setting aside an hour....or two....to explore.

Most of my books are used, and although there are plenty of used book stores I find myself buying books here the most. The used book isle is very easy to browse alphabetically by author, and they have a section with new used arrivals. Prices are very reasonable, and they seem to have a lot of authors that I like. They also have a house cat, and pleasant music. I like to pick up a book and then have a bite at Chow down the street.

Pete really is a very nice guy. I bought a bunch of random vintage papers and magazines, and he only changed me $10. It was a bargain in my opinion. There are heaps and stacks of stuff so you really have to look. Be sure to ask if you know what you are looking for.

This place is cool. Total dive, but tons of great historical print materials. They have old books galore, but I really loved skimming through the magazines from the 60s and even 40s. My wife and I spent a good hour playing around in there. Fun little stop!
