As far as grocery stores go, this is your gourmet store. I come here when Im looking for something special. In the past I found Paul Prudhommes Poultry Magic Seasoning which I needed for a recipe, craft beers I couldnt find elsewhere, limited release wines, specialty cheeses, instant creme brulee mix, and even fresh creme brulee in the bakery. Most recently I have become addicted to the fresh Creme Brulee. A few trips ago I discovered they had large pie tin portions of it. Prepared and refrigerated in the bakery section. Small single servings are in the display case but there are larger tins on the side near the freezer section. If you take these to the bakery counter they will sugar them, and caramelize them to the darkness of your preference at no additional charge. Price is.. $8. These containers are about 4 servings. This isnt the grocery store I would do my daily shopping at, but if I was hosting a small party or get together, wanted to serve some specialty items, this would be the spot to get them. If you walk the store you are bound to find things youve never seen before. They also cater. There is a full service deli and catering service in the store.

A class called Macaron Mania was offered on the Cooking School Schedule, and, since I have been interested in making these cookies without much success, I decided to attend. Once I had taken a decorating class from our chef instructor, Steve Wegner, so I was assured that what I would learn would be beneficial. And it was. Steves expertise as an instructor is reassuring because it is seated in patience and experience - the problem places for me he was quickly and patiently able to instruct me how to avoid. For example, it can be difficult to see when the macaronage is just falling onto itself and not too loosely--he showed us. Piping these is not easy for me. Steve gave me one small tip - and fixed it! And that was the way it went as our three groups of 4 turned out perfect batches of lemon, raspberry and chocolate macarons, complete with buttercreams and ganache. Central Market is lucky to have such an expert and natural 4-Star Chef Instructor! Thank you Steve!!!

Plenty of exotic selections, meat section is much better than it was just a few years ago when spoiled meat was always possible. Some of the cuts are affordable, such as pork shoulder; chicken and house-made sausage is a good choice, I like the kielbasa. All the rest appears to be stratospherically-priced. Seafood is far too expensive in my opinion, I prefer the packaged frozen Orca Bay salmon, cod and flounder from the regular HEB; all wild, from USA, and reasonably priced. Amazing selection in the bakery and pastry shop with better ingredients (more natural) than the regular HEB. Staff are usually friendly and helpful. What really sets this place apart from Whole Foods though are the much more reasonable prices at Central Market for everything, especially produce. Fewer exotic-looking cashiers, too, although I imagine most people wouldnt care about that too much, I dont either really, its just an observation.

I have an 80 year old friend who was treated with shame last week. Up to this point I have been very pleased with this Central Market store. Earlier this week my friend had her wallet stolen while shopping in the produce department. That was a very bad experience and the Alamo Heights police were very nice and caring. The manager at the Central Market store showed no concern for my friend nor her situation. By the time she was finished with the police she was visibly shaken. The manager did not offer nor assign anyone to walk my 80 year old friend to her car. The manager also told my friend there were not any cameras in the produce department to show who stole her wallet. Either this manager is uninformed or unwilling to take the time to help her. I worked for a grocery company for 15 years and we had cameras on every inch of the store to record any liability issues. SHAME!

Great variety and unique items take the cake here! I would give this business a 5 star rating but for the prices. Now I am aware that this is a specialty store for this Texas company (HEB) but they need to examine how they price in regards to items one can find at a regular HEB location. Considering the buying power this company has they can afford to streamline pricing and keep pricing between carryover items identical. There are enough specialty items here to maintain profits when looking at pricing. The fact that one is going to pay anywhere from 50cents to $1.50 more for the exact same item between locations is insulting and makes the customer feel their obligation falls in convenience instead of quality. Cleanliness and customer service is awesome here! (most HEBs follow suit, were Texan, thats how we roll).

This place did not live up to the reviews. I am visiting San Antonio for a week and stopped by here for some healthy meals. The carry-out Ceasar salad is awful, the dressing oily and the croutons soggy. The sandwich we ordered for lunch had a not-anywhere-near-ripe tomato, which was disgusting. But what disturbed me most about this place was the service. I stopped a couple of times and asked for assistance (as Id never been here before) and the staff were less than helpful. One looked at me like she was shocked I would even ask a question. And she was at the help desk. I asked the cashier for plastic forks and knives (we are at a hotel) and he wanted to know exactly how many we needed...then he forgot to put them in the bag. I often judge places like this by those who work there. So, in this case...Ill move on.

The largest Texas grocery chain decided to let foodies and chefs and beer snobs have ONE store where they could find a gazillion kinds of mustard and that special Swiss cheese that only comes from yodeling cows -- and forget about consumer metrics and profit per square foot. Corporate didnt lose its shirt so heres the largest deli in San Antonio. You can take a self guided two hour tour. Whole Foods actually originated about three miles from the original Central Marketarket experiment in Austin. Fun story. The H.E.B stands for Howard E. Butts who started the first humble grocery store in Kerrville, Texas. After hearing the one millionth butt joke, they changed the name. Yes. A few of the big city stores have Kosher sections.

I was fed up with my local HEBs produce sections quality and selection. I decided to give the central market a try, and it was the best HEB Ive been to. Their normal non organic produce prices were on par with normal HEBs. The big difference is all of the produce there is at peak freshness. Another great feature is that you can lable the produce at machines in the produce section for a quick checkout. They also have an entire butcher shop there too. I got a small chicken for $4.50 and it tasted way better than the usual frozen and air thawed chickens that are prepackaged at other HEBs. Ill be shopping there in the future, even if it is a 15 minute drive.

SO DISAPPOINTED !!! We had a Celebration for my 27th Birthday on Sept. 1st and since this day feel in the middle of the week we planned a small dinner party at 7pm. I usually go to "my" H.E.B" on Olmos which I simply LOVE ...but since I wanted to make it EXTRA SPECIAL I choose to go to the bakery at the Central Market place for her Choc. cake. To my surprise they did not have a reg. size Choc. Cake so I made the decision to buy the Boston Creme Pie instead. WRONG choice- I could Hardly cut thru it , it was so hard and NOT tasty at all!! So very disappointed and embarrassed that everyone hated the dessert! =( .. I wont go there again!
