I grew up in the SW part of town. There was a pretty good HW store near our house at Bellaire & Hillcroft. If Dad needed something that was where he started. If they didnt have it, there were 2-3 pretty good HW stores in the center of Bellaire - all within 1 block of each other. If THEY didnt have it, it was time to go to Southland. Nowadays, Southland is about the last non-chain HW store left and they have things that Lowes and Home Depot will never have. They have people you can find and ask questions. They dont always have the answer but in general, the least knowledgable person at Southland is far better than the average (dare I say best?) employee at HD. Most of all, if you need help in HD, you can go to the service desk and say, "I am in tools and I need some help." You will hear the page go out BUT NOBODY EVER COMES TO HELP NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU DO THAT. And even if you get someone, they usually dont know but wont tell you that, they will make up an answer. 32 years ago I bought a house not far from Southland. I avoid HD as much as possible and prefer to give my business to Southland or Lowes. If you have an old house there are many things for that house that can ONLY be bought at Southland. Lamp wicks, glass shades for kerosene lamps, pressure cooker rings, zinc wood preservative, individual spade lugs, special sizes of nuts and bolts, special sizes of springs (from their collection), weird plumbing couplings, great cat litter scoops, bushings, special hi-heat wire, loose knobs handles, lawn mower blade balancer are only a few of the weird things I have bought there that are available nowhere else in town. Period. If you have never been there you owe yourself a visit and be sure and walk EVERY AISLE - you will not be able to leave without buying something - be it something you needed to fix something that you had not purchased because you didnt know where to get it or because you found something you didnt even know existed - like a freakin bat house. And if you have a question about something, somebody there will be able to help you with it. Oh yeah, they have a bike rack there and NO LOWES OR HD I have ever been to had a lousy bike rack to lock my bike up. It will be a sad day when we lose Southland.

Where to begin, The five people I asked about anti-sieze for bolts had no clue and just wanted to sit there and look dumb. When I finally found someone who thought, he knew what he was talking about was very rude, kept calling it something else. When I informed him the website had it listed, he got all snappy about the two sites, and them not having everything because that is a national website. (best Steve Martin Impression) Well EXCUSE MEEEEEEEEE. As someone mentioned, the store is a disorganized mess, you have to ask somebody for help, but those people all were confused as well. I just moved to Houston, everyone else has been really friendly, I was excited to have a mom and pop hardware store 5 blocks away. A store I will never sit foot in again (and I do a lot of repairs and handyman stuff). Take my advice, head over to Buffalo hardware

When selecting a hardware store in central Houston, there really isnt anything to it. We dont have a Lowes, Home Depot, and until recently, not even a Wal-Mart. Southland Hardware is honestly one of the only choices. AND, I love it! I drive by the Montrose shop along Westheimer daily and feel a little tingle in my heart each and every time. I dont even mind that I nearly always have to park in the street. The store is a giant mess of clutter that is somehow still organized just enough. A seasoned shopper can always find what they need, but if you are one that needs assistance, Southland has some of the friendliest employees in town! Theyll not only help you find anything your heart desires, but make sure you know what youre doing with it too!

Even though Southland Hardware continues to be one of the best resources for hardware, housewares, and small-scale construction materials in Montrose, the sad truth is that it is not the local institution it once was. The friendly and knowledgeable staff of its heyday are retiring and being replaced by younger and less capable (not to mention occasionally rude and/or clueless) employees. At the same time, the facility itself is increasingly rundown and poorly kept. I can purchase the same goods elsewhere at a considerably better price, without being treated like a shoplifter by someone slightly younger than my oldest pair of shoes--going forward, thats exactly what I intend to do.

My bike lock broke so I needed to buy a new one. I went in with my bike so it wouldnt get stolen while I purchased a new one and was told I had to leave it outside in a very rude, scolding manner. I tried to explain my situation but the clerk cut me off and told me again to put my bike outside. This store might look sweet and old-timey but good old-fashioned business people would have worked with me and not been so unpleasant because I was prepared to spend money at their store. I left with my bike, didnt buy anything from them and never will in the future.

This outfit does not stand behind what they sell. I purchased a remote, battery operated doorbell that worked a few times and then quit working. I returned the doorbell and Southland hardware said they would take it back this time, but not a third time and I was told to go get another one. When I returned, the woman had left the receipt on the counter, but disappeared. I waited, but she wasnt coming back. She said that I should take the issue up with the manufacturer, though Southland HArdware was the one who took my money and sold it to me.

This little hardware store has everything you need from large buckets to put water in during a hurricane, unusual lighting and drawer attachments for early 20th century houses, rain gauges, rubber boots, canning supplies, tools, bike supplies, wheeled planters, locks, batteries, soil amendments, etc. The only thing they lack is lumber. I always feel good knowing that Im supporting a local hardware store and keeping money from Lowes and Home Depot. Plus you know you are in Montrose when you see the tats on the cashiers.

I avoided this place for years because of its windowless exterior, and had thoughts of turning around upon entering the store and seeing tightly packed. The truth is that I have always found everything I need (and more) when I go there. The staff is also friendly and helpful, which is a nice change from the larger hardware stores where you are lucky if you can find an employee to even guide you in the right direction. The prices are also pretty good here too, considering the convenient location.

I dont know why I keep going back to this hell hole. Each an every time I say Im not going back. Why? Because the folks who work there are RUDE. They have been rude for over 20 years. God forbid you ask them a question. Its as if youre bothering them when all theyre doing us standing around with sour looks on their faces. The only thing they have going for them is location. The store that had "almost" everything. What they lack is nice customer service.
