Everything about Black 13 is top notch! I read all the great reviews before I went (which is why I decided on getting my work done there), and they lived up to every expectation. 1) The Parlor - Amazing space. You know youre in a professional area as soon as you walk in the door. This is evident simply in their logo (clean, professional, understated, and classic). You can tell a lot of thought went into the space. Nice high ceilings (the exposed pipes/lighting give some great focal points to stare at while getting work done :) ). Tons of artwork line the walls (REAL artwork, not Flash), including some incredible (and incredibly large) spray-paint-on-canvas work from Marty. This place feels like an art gallery. 2) The Talent - You can tell from the website that all the guys there are amazingly talented. Ian White did my tattoo, and I am absolutely THRILLED with the result. I had some ideas about what I wanted and some reference material, and Ian knocked the final design out of the park. I couldnt have asked for a better representation of what I was looking for. The session itself was great - good music playing (didnt even have to break out my iPod), good conversation (Ian was very laid back and does not act like he is better than you - and I got that vibe from everyone there), and again, an AMAZING finished product. These guys are not "tracers", they are true artists. I feel like I should charge people just to look at my tattoo! Ryan and Steve were also working on pieces while i was there and the results of those were sick! And yes, there is a wait to get work done. I had to wait a few weeks for my appointment. But it was worth the wait and then some. Theres a reason these guys are booked solid. Theyre the best in Nashville by far, and Id venture to say the best in TN, possibly the best in the south, and maybe even the US. Its simply amazing that we have a shop of this caliber in Nashville. 3) The Business/Marketing/Ownership - You can tell that this place cares about their relationship with their customers and growing their business to be the best it can be. The website is first rate. They have a great presence on social networking sites (primarily Facebook and Twitter), showing they have an idea of how businesses need to operate in this current age. And their communication blew me away. Anytime I called, the person on the phone was really helpful and didnt sound like they were just trying to get me off the phone. I exchanged emails with Doy Gardner (one of the owners), trying to get my ideas across and schedule the appointment. Doy was incredibly responsive (to the point I was actually surprised at how prompt the responses were) and extremely helpful. Stop looking around for a place to get your work done, and schedule an appointment now! Ive had some work done at other places in Nashville, but any future work will be done at Black 13!

My sister wanted to get a tattoo (truth be told she wanted to get matching sister tattoos, but I backed out) while we were in Nashville. A friend of hers told her she got a tattoo at a shop on Broadway, but when I looked it up, the reviews scared me, and I vetoed it, but all of those bad reviews said go to Black 13 instead. So I looked up Black 13, liked what people had to say, liked their website, liked that one of the co-owners, Doy, who handles "the details" and correspondence, was helpful and responsive, so I booked an appointment (cuz thats how I roll). We arrived, and the first thing we all said when we walked in was "ooooh it smells nice." People really underestimate details like that in the success of a small business, but not Doy. The guys were nice, and took the time to chat with us and explain why they would or would not recommend certain things. The shop was neat as a pin, clean, smelled nice, well appointed, each customer gets set up in their own little walled room/cubicle for their session, it was just very well done. I didnt even get a tattoo, but I needed to write up a good review for these guys. My sister is happy with her tattoo, and thumbing through the portfolios on the table, I really liked some of the work the artists have done (even if I am too terrified to get a tattoo myself). If you are looking for an all around good experience, avoid the strip, go to Black 13.

First off, I have one or two tattoos and have experienced the process with many different artists - I have been tattooed by everyone of the guys at B13 and each time it was unique, comfortable and in the end resulted in a great piece of art. The shop is decorated in a cool modern decor but you still know your in a tattoo shop. The guys up front are always exceptional at guiding you through the set up and all the artists will give you time to walk through the design process. This is going to be on you for life and you get the feeling from everyone working there that they really care about that. The shop offers an artist for everyone, they have four or five artists working at any given time and each one brings something unique to the table. So whatever you are looking for B13 will have someone to suit you. People always compliment my work and always ask where i got them or where i would suggest. These days it is hard to recommend anything to people especially something like a tattoo shop but i know when i tell people the only place in Nashville to go is B13 i can say that with total confidence..

It was my husbands turn to get tattooed and we ended up here after weve found a flyer and doing some research on the internet. Were Dutch and we werent familiar with this shop or any artist. But we are familiar with other tattoo shops. And we were happy we decided to go here. Even though we were with our 10 months old son, we were welcomed in the shop. My son behaved excellent and didnt bother anyone while my husband got tattooed. My son just kept smiling and even played peekaboo with the manager. The manager was kind enough to warm up his food. I must say I really appreciated that as of course, a tattoo shop is definitely not a place to play for kids. Theres a part where kids (-18) arent allowed, but theres a comfortable waiting area. The shop looks professional and is very stylish. of course I cant judge how talented each of the 9 artists are, but my husband was happy with his new tattoo! He was also satisfied about the artist. So I would recommend this place for sure when in Nashville.

*Note* This review is not based on their actual tattoo skills. This is based on the phone call I placed to attempt to *get* a tattoo. I have never been to their establishment, this is only based on the customer service I got on the phone. I researched this place pretty hard and wanted to get a tattoo there. I really like some So I called a bit beforehand and was told they didnt even have time for me to come in and talk. Nor did he seem even remotely interested that I wanted to get a tattoo. Now, I do understand they seem like a really awesome place, but the guy didnt even try to help me with what I was wanting to do. If Im going to trust someone to ink something onto my body.. I want them to seem to care about what I want to do. I hope maybe this guy was just having a bad day.
