Although I do have several tattoos and have been in quite a few shops around Memphis, I have not had work done at Underground Art. I say this only to state the reason that I have yet to have any work done there. At first, my experience there was absolutely wonderful - I was very pleased with the drawing that was worked up for me, happy with the price and everyone there was very pleasant and accommodating. Unfortunately, the artist I was working with moved out of town before I was able to get the work done and I chose to get one of the other artists to do the tattoo for me. This was when the problems started. I told the new (female) artist that I really loved the drawing that the first artist worked up for me and that I really wanted to stay with that style. I was assured that although her style was slightly different, she was sure that she could emulate the previous artists work. This was not at all the case... She basically ingnored what I said I needed done and at the same time was very pompous and condescending about the entire idea. When I called to inquire about the original artist coming back into town to do the work for me, the new female artist was very sarcastic and abrasive, acted like her work was the epitome of all tattoos and then proceeded to hang up in my face. The reality was, I just didnt like her drawing. It was that simple. Its my body thats receiving the ink... Again, Underground Art seems like a fine establishment and I may still have work done there in the future, but certainly not while she is employed there.

Im pretty picky when it comes to Tattoo artists and shops. After scouring the Memphis area portfolios and shops, I found one that fit my needs perfectly. Everyone here was great! I came in with a very distinct design in mind, and what is so great about this place is they are professionals who know their craft. From my experience, theyre not going to tattoo something on you that wont look great. If something wont tattoo well, they tell you, and suggest a way to make it work and look great at the same time. I spent a lot of time at Underground on a monthly basic working on a large back piece and got to see a lot of the artists work. They are all great artists, with fantastic attitudes. Every experience there has been an awesome one. Theres a reason they are recommended so highly around Memphis, and all the artists there are ones Id want decorating my body.

I got my first, second, and now fourth tattoo here from David. His line work is MASTERFUL (only guy Id trust to do a lens diagram--left wrist), and his artistry is beautifully amazing. For my latest piece I gave him a picture of a statue, a piece of plainchant and a drawing of a centuries old teaching method and he has given me one of the most beautiful pieces of art Ive ever seen. Im very proud to have it on my arm. And knowing everyone else in the shop, these are incredible people and provide a very welcoming atmosphere. Theres a reason theyve been voted #1 for so many years running.

They really have a high artistic aesthetic. In terms of craftsmanship, Ive never once seen a crappy tattoo done by anyone at this shop, and Ive known artists there since they opened. Im older than most people are when they get their first tatts, and Ive known Ivy since she was little, and it was so cool to have her do my first tattoo. I will be going back for a few more before I quit, assuming I dont become a tattoo addict.

I have gotten 2 tattoos from them. I am going for a 3rd. I have been to a few of the shops around Memphis and nothing is a good as these guys, friendly, very understanding and WONDERFUL art work. I dont think I could ever go anywhere else for work again :) Very much worth it.
