When I first moved here, I was asking people about the local grocery stores and heard some good and bad about Karns - mostly that it smells bad and has no rhyme or reason to its layout, but if I need meat, this is the place to go.I have to say that I rather enjoy my trips to Karns, or at least did in the beginning. There are some employees that are really nice, especially the teenagers at the registers, who always seem to be pleasant and eager to help you to your car if you have a lot of items or if you are with someone who has trouble moving around. (The teenagers who deal with the carts outside are also very nice and helpful - Ive never been to a grocery store where these guys come up, unprompted, and ask to help me put my things in my car... and do it all with a smile on their faces.) Most of the employees, though, look like they are extremely unhappy, and this includes management. Produce is adequate at best, which is shocking considering they make it out that they have locally grown products. If youre not careful when picking a packaged item, youll get home to find that half of the products inside are moldy. Their Express Lanes are a joke. There isnt an item limit, so its up to customers to decide whether they should go through that line or not - and its extremely frustrating when you have two items and youre standing in line behind someone who has 50. I complained to an older lady (cashier) and she said that if I didnt like it, I needed to let the Karns Family know (and sounded very angry about it herself). I complained to the Office Manager (Diane, I think it was) and she told me that if I didnt like it, I had three options: 1) Buy more items and go through a regular line, 2) Go through the self-checkout, or 3) Find somewhere else to do my shopping. I wonder if Mr. Karns knows that customers are told to go shop somewhere else. My main problem - and my reason for such a low mark - is their customer service. I dont think Ive ever seen such an unhappy bunch of people - and I used to think that Giant had the most unhappy employees. The lack of smiles or any type of kindness shown is pretty ridiculous. If youre up there to purchase a lottery ticket, then they are really nice to you, but if you go up there with a problem, they act like you are inconveniencing them... when they are just standing around doing nothing in the first place. (I complained to the Office Manager about that, too. She said that they are always busy, but I have seen her stand behind the big windows of the office looking at her cell phone for 10 or more minutes. I have also seen her be incredibly rude to customers and belittle employees - to their faces and behind their backs. She seems to think that no one can hear her when shes in the office, but if you sit on the bench outside of it, you can hear all the horrible things she says about and to people. Things I wouldnt even say to my worst enemy. I have even heard her ask people who win the lottery where her tip is... and I dont think shes joking at all. Her smile is so fake and her candy sweetness is disgusting, especially after youve heard her yell at employees.) They had two really nice ladies working there, but I havent seen either one of them in well over a month, so I guess they no longer work for Karns. Heck, I watched the blonde one get yelled at by a customer when she had to go get a product price and she took it all with a smile on her face (an actual smile, not a grimace) and always made people feel welcome in the store. She was polite to customers and employees, and would tell the teenagers that they were doing a great job (and they always looked shocked, as if they had never heard it before). She wasnt even a manager (I assume, since she wasnt wearing the blue shirt).

Moved to area several months ago and after going to Giant, I quickly decided I preferred Karns because of the smaller environment and more family feel. However, I think I am going to have to start going to Giant despite my not wanting to. I have purchased several items over the past couple of months that are either expired or a day or two away from expiring. My expired purchases have been in-house diced/packaged salsa, several different Tastycake cookie/cake items, frozen sausage and bacon crumbles and precooked frozen burgers. In reading reviews, I am surprised no one else has mentioned expired merchandise. Also, in reading reviews, I decided speaking to management in person will be fruitless, so I will just leave a disappointing review instead.

Karns is great for certain things, especially on Tuesdays. Tuesday you can get their bundle pricing without buying large quantities so I always stock up on meat for the week (often a dollar less per pound versus any other day). Eggs are incredibly cheap here, and at times they have good deals on other items. Produce tends to be very expensive and not always the best quality. More positives than negatives, but this should not be the only grocery store you shop at during the week

The meat counter is outstanding. They know their meat cuts, give suggestions on which cuts you might like, offer personal suggestions and different ways they personally prepare which ever meat you choose. I love that. The over all store is very neat and clean. I love the fact they carry the hard to find items. Their selection of international items is awesome. Karns gets it right!

Great service. Got a bunch of meat on 6/3 that I planned to freeze. On 6/7 it had gone bad before freezing it. Not only did they replace my food, but they gave me an extra New York Strip. Im not one to return food usually, but I had spent a lot of money on that meat. I went in feeling a bit sour about the situation and left with a great outlook on the business. A+, Karns.

Low mark for customer service. Example: Last week an item that was BOGO was sold out.Got a raincheck. Cost then was $8. Today, went back to use raincheck, same item was on sale for $4. Karns management refused to honor the raincheck. My thought is this, Karns jacks up the price for BOGO, and the "sale" price is the regular price. Shady, sneaky and dishonest.

Kind of grocery store - like most - in which you need to stick to just sales and specials. Yet many times you can save a little more at the other grocers. Great selection of meats & poultry & it really pays to buy bulk where you can save a nit more in an effort to live on the local wages.

I adore Karns. I like that it is owned by a local family. And they have most items that the larger chains do. The meat dept is actually a butcher shop. They cut your meat the way you want it, you dont have to choose a prewrapped package.

Ive been a loyal Karns shopper for years. Best customer service , best deals, best loyalty program. Great selection, friendly, sometimes entertaining butchers serving top quality meats. I go out of my way to shop here.
