I had Toyota put a door ding guard on my car shortly after I purchased it from Ron Tonkin Toyota in 2011. Here at 5 years later I am unable to open the back door as the molding is too close and has been rubbing on my front door enough to bend the metal of my front door. I called Toyota to make an appointment. The girl made my appointment for 8am on Saturday and said that they could shave the molding to fix the problem. I took it in that Saturday and the guy who helped me said he couldnt see where Toyota ever did the molding work. According to him this is something only done by their body shop. The body shop is at Ron Tonkin Honda and they do not open until 9am, but I would have to go see them. I was sure that I took it to Ron Tonkin Toyota to get this done originally. So in the hour I had to wait for the body shop to open, I drove back home and found my original receipt that shows that Ron Tonkin Toyota did indeed do the work. I then took my car to Ron Tonkin Honda (Body Shop) Two workers there stated that the molding was improperly put on. They incorrectly put the molding over the plastic door guard. Since the molding is designed to stick to metal and not plastic it had lifted which is causing this problem. They were also shocked when I stated that I was told they could shave the molding. This is not possible as it is a painted piece. I got an estimate for around $320.00. I took my estimate and my original receipt back to Ron Tonkin Toyota as I dont feel I should have to pay for incorrect work not to mention it will cost me more to fix the one side then when both sides were originally done. I spoke to the original service person who told me that Ron Tonkin Toyota never did the work and showed him my receipt from back then. He then pushed me off to another person who went in the back and supposedly talked to another person. When he came back he explained that there is nothing Ron Tonkin Toyota will do to help pay for the fix as the doors could have moved in the given time. MOVED??? Metal doors?!?!?! That statement was so ridiculous that I took my papers and left. I originally purchased my car at Ron Tonkin Toyota and for the most part have had excellent service. It is too bad this horrible error in judgment on their part has caused this friction in the relationship. It is their error and they should stand behind their name and fix it. I find it interesting that I always get a customer questionnaire after every service call except for this one. Not a word from Ron Tonkin Toyota. I also wanted to add the staff at Ron Tonkin Honda were very sympathetic to my problem and have amazing people working there.

Our 2003 Prius had a no-start issue with a check engine light as a result. We originally had diagnostics done at a AAA service center, which indicated the power control module needed to be replaced, but this could really only be done at a dealership. So, we brought the car in to Tonkin Toyota, who found the same issue, but also indicated that the brake control module needed replacing as well (something the original diagnostics didnt indicate), for a total of about $3000 - while being told that that our car was super clean and a pleasure to work with. Within 24 hours of getting the car back from servicing, the hydraulic brake booster assembly failed. We ended up having to tow the car to the Corvallis Toyota dealership (we split time between Portland and Corvallis) and were assured that the two dealerships would coordinate to figure out what happened. At this point it was also noted that there was severe damage to the windshield (at the very base of the center of the windshield, couldnt see from inside the car and effectively shielded from any sort of road debris as well) that wasnt there when we brought the car in to Tonkin, and wasnt caused by the tow truck (I was there for the tow, nothing touched the windshield), and so had to have happened while the car was at the Tonkin service center. Long story short, it was asserted that Tonkin had nothing to do with the brake assembly failing or the damage to the windshield, and that it was on us to pay for those repairs. Furthermore, the original no-start problem happened again while the car was at the Corvallis service center, so we effectively paid Tonkin $3000 to destroy the brake assembly and crush the base of the windshield of our super clean car. I dont know enough about cars to understand how all of the components interact, but having the brakes fail immediately after a brake-related component was replaced seems like too much of a coincidence. But even if it was unrelated and just bad luck, I feel like if a company claims to be built upon customer relationships, as Tonkin does, theyre the ones that should pay for the bad luck and maintain the customer relationship, not give the customer the shaft to avoid having to address the problem. Severely disappointed in this service center, and would advise any other toyota owners to look elsewhere for repairs.

Like most people, the thought of going into a car dealership gives me a headache, but my experience with Ron Tonkin brings it to a whole new level. I have family and friends in the car business so Ive come to learn the typical "let me talk to the manager" games and price haggling. In this case, I gave Ron Tonkin a quick disclaimer that I wasnt interested in any high-pressure, unreasonably long haggling over pricing and told them to put their bet foot forward on price. Well, their best foot forward was actually $1,000 higher than what the price tag on the car said and $2500 less than what the KBB recommended trade-in value was on our car along with an obviously few extra points on the financing. I could see a typical dealer undercutting someone on a trade-in. After all, I expect any business to turn a profit, but they lost all credibility with me when they tried to sell me a vehicle for a higher price than was actually listed (it was kind of noticeable on the high vis neon sign dangling from the vehicles mirror). Walking away from this deal was the best decision I could have made. Ron Tonkins not living up to their "award-winning service" claim. Called Dave Smith dealership the same day at the recommendation of a friend and they gave me the recommended trade-in value, a $6K lower price, and 2.75% less on the interest rate offered by RT. Do yourself a favor and shop this dealership (including ones outside the Portland Metro Area)... And Thanks Ron Tonkin reputation monitor for your reply. Im not going to call. You have my number and no one ever bothered to talk to me or give me a call after I caught your blatant dishonesty. Bad business practice and poor effort at service recovery. For such a large dealership in a competitive market, youd think your practices would be squared away.
