Quote, “to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals and strengthening the human-animal bond,” this is the mission statement from the Humane Society’s website in Corvallis, Oregon. I have had the privilege of experiencing the company first hand, and as stated above they are true to their word with service, and the opportunities they promise to uphold. Today I will be giving a brief review of how their compassion is demonstrated, and also some of the other services they provide to our community, while most of their staff is on a volunteer bases. When my son, Ethan, was 6 years old he asked me if he could get a cat. I know how much time it takes to invest in being a pet owner, so I told him if he still wanted a cat when he was eight years old, I would get one for him on his eighth birthday. Ethan thought about this agreement a lot through the past two years, and as his eighth birthday approached his excitement exceedingly grew. December 11th, 2015 finally arrived, Ethan’s eighth birthday. He went to school with such an enthusiastic attitude, knowing today was the day he had been waiting for the previous two years. I picked Ethan, and his little brother, up from school, and we headed to the Humane Society. Because I had been doing some research on their website, we had a few kittens in mind to choose from before we arrived. First impression of the young ladies behind the counter was excellent. The boys and were greeted with smiles, and asked what we needed. They gave us a thorough rundown of the rooms the center had, the ages the cats were grouped in, and if they were friendly with children, as well as, temperament for their initial habitat. After browsing through their selection, the boys and I made a choice of a kitten that was almost eight months old. The cat’s name was initially Sleigh Bells. The in depth process of adoption papers should be appreciated of all customers that have the intention of providing proper care for their newest addition in the family. We purchased a carrier for a reasonable price, to transport Sleigh Bells home. Adoption certificate, gift certificates for food at local pet stores, shot records and his neuter procedure were also included in our take home packet. While we were waiting for the papers to be processed the boys and I renamed our pet, Percy, it seemed very fitting for his calm, loving temperament. Although most people probably think of only pet adoption for the Humane Society, it is only one of the many services that this company provides. For low-income families, they have a pet-food bank. Through government grants, and income generated from the thrift store, called Cat’s Meow, the Humane Society is also able to provide Safe Housing programs in crisis shelters, behavior and counseling referrals for all ages, as well as, lost and found services. In conclusion, if you or your families are looking for a place that provides excellent care services with a genuine attitude for helping, the Human Society is the best place to go, in South Town, Corvallis, Oregon. I went into this situation thinking I was simply full filling a promise to my son, but the heart felt experience for contributing to an animal in need was the real reward. Percy is the best addition to our family. I didn’t realize how much I was the one that needed him around as a true, loyal companion that fills my heart with joy.

We adopted our last cat from here 4 years ago after my 18 year old black cat died from old age. She was about 8 months old and blended into my family of cats beautifully - mostly male cats [all strays over the years] and very non-territorial and accepting of her. This little girl is just a sweetheart! In fact, shes posing in my new hanging basket right before it got planted (see pic on my Facebook page - its adorable). Her temperament is beautiful and she opens darn near every door in the house when she wants into a room. She loves to chase me through the garden talking and chattering all the while and playfully batting at my heels. Her favority pastime is to jump up on the fence and watch the chickens go about their daily routine. :-) She plays fetch with the plastic round rings from milk jugs, too. Salem turned out to be a wicked smart puss with an incredible personality. Adoption was easy and we love this gorgeous cat. Shes definitely my Baby Girl aka Boo Kitty aka Salem. She has a funny habit of running past the stove [tailed fluffed up and ears pinned] and pulling down the hand towels as she rounds the corner down the hallway...a run-by toweling if you will. She does this to get my attention when she wants to play and its hysterical. Adoption fees were very reasonable, spaying was done well.

Nine years ago I adopted a yorkie pup at Heartland. Muffin was the center of my heart and had a personality to beat all. Unfortunately, she escaped into the street a year ago and was hit by a passing car. I was in a state of breakdown for 2 weeks and am just now able to talk about it. I thank Heartland for those 8pteciois years shared with little Muffin. I would also like to get another yorkie at this time.

Front desk was very helpful and directed us to what we were looking for. The back kennels were clean and aired out. The volunteers/workers seemed like they enjoyed what they were doing and asked if we were finding everything ok. The cat area was also very clean and looked like they were all happy kitties! Looked like a great atmosphere to volunteer in.

There were barely any animals, and we had left my dog out in the car with ac and shade and water to drink so we could show my nice the animals.. About 10 minutes we were in their they asked if we had a black Jetta and we said yeah and they said oh well people are worrier about your dog and are going to call the cops. They were rude about it.

I love going and looking at all of the kitties! I adopted my cat from here about a year and a half ago, and now Im actually going to adopt another. The staff here have always been extremely helpful and polite. I love that they have programs to let children come volunteer.

Solid facility. A little small, and doesnt have a "kitten room" like some other Humane Societies have, but they do good work. Cant speak for their adoption process but other people who were there and adopting seemed happy with the service.

Heartland is one of the quietest shelters Ive ever been to. I volunteered here for a few hours and loved it! All of the staff are so nice. And the dogs and cats were so well behaved. I love it! I want to adopt from here as soon as I can!!

Debbie at front desk is very rude to customers. Also the volunteers/workers in the back give out false information about adoption fees. Seems like not a lot of people know what their job is around here.
