My BFF and I spent the better part of a colorful Autumn afternoon reveling in the sights and sounds of the Mast General Store & Annex in Valle Crucis, NC. We were enamored by the original and still operating US Post Office, the antique wooden drawers filled with hardware of every kind, a Coca-Cola cooler filled with longneck bottles of soda pop, and all the little necessities of life for a rural mountain hamlet. Contemporary outdoor clothes and footwear prepare you for hiking, biking, or skiing in any season of the year. Dont miss the view of Dutch Creek behind the Ice Cream shop at the Annex. We enjoyed a picnic lunch there while watching a flock of redwing blackbirds splash among the rocks. Idyllic doesnt seem adequate to describe this place!

After living in Knoxville for 20 years, were really familiar with Mast General Store for high end outdoor gear, and unique items that take you back to another place in time. We stopped here for our second time this past weekend, and stumbled upon the Red School building which has discounted shoes, socks etc. We got a great deal on some Sperry boots for my wife, and Farm to Feet socks for skiing. Saved over 50% off retail, and never knew this area existed. Check it out along with the cool merchandise offered in the Original store. Such a great throwback in time with original floors, and creaky stairs! Loved it

Beautiful setting and great service. I love the Woolrich selection. We like this store because it is actually 2 separate stores, separated by the river and the elementary school. The latest trip had us bringing home a vest and jacket for me and Ronda got two woolrich jackets that are goregous! I also purchased a couple of those tiny Leatherman pocket tools for the boys, but I liked them so much, I am keeping them for myself!!! We always visit when we are in the area and really enjoy our time at the two stores. BTW, the big store in Boone is nice too, but I like the Valle Crucis stores better!

I love going to this place every year with my family. Unfortunately, a recent visit was dampened by the poor attitude of the cashier, a stocky gentleman working the mens section near the post office. When I walked up, he was speaking to someone on the phone and did not show them any type of courtesy by speaking to them in a rude manner. Then the gentleman made a sarcastic comment about the items I was purchasing. Its amazing how one individuals lack of professionalism can tarnish such a great establishment.

This is a true old time general store that has branched to multiple locations in western NC and still has functioning mail boxes for local residents. You can find all kinds of wares including outdoor equipment. We have been to all the locations but nothing beats this original store in a set of historical buildings. The candy store right down the street has the largest collection of candy, both the hard to find treats we remember as kids as well as current selections, we have ever seen.

I was a little disappointed only because a local Boone couple had told me that Mast wad a typical outdoor apparel store, but that the Valle Crucis location was more like an old timey general store. Other than having rough wood floors and a little candy stand, it was still your typical outdoor store with overpriced luxury-material apparel. All things you could get at REI or Gander Mountain etc. Not really that special or worth the drive :(

I love going to Mast stores, but this one is the best for me. Walking into the store is like taking a trip back in time. Its not that hard to imagine the old timers gathered there. They have a fantastic candy selection, and the rest of the products in the store are all top quality. They might not be the cheapest place to get merchandise, but they are worth the little bit extra to make sure they stay in business.

A 5 cent cup of coffee, and a place that I can wear my bib overalls, flannel shirt, and feel as if I belong there....part of the family that goes way back..........sit on the back porch and say hey to all who enter through the back door........have missed it since retiring to the beach, but plan to visit soon with my younger brother....the mountains are just plain magic, like you would expect heaven to be......

The Mast General Store is like stepping back in time to when folks moved at a slower pace. The quaint interior and the folksy employees make you glad you stopped in. Their selection of old-time candies, collectibles and other merchandise is a delight too look at, sample, purchase and enjoy. Take the scenic route back to Boone, over the hill, and you will have a memorable driving experience too.

The place is amazing, wonderful old original items and its a historians joy to see. I felt some vibes in the store (for those who believe in residual feelings/moments) which made the visit all the more interesting... they also had toys I havent seen since I was in elementary school! They carry sooooo much and more

Visited there many years ago and loved it. Recently, I visited the branch in Boone,NC and fell in love with it too. Their customer service is exceptional, especially after I spoke with the manager over a mistake on my receipt. We need more stores with old fashioned values that this company represents.

Excellent views, I always love stores like this that allow for you to purchase candy etc. for very good prices as well as just look around at the memorabilia. Its a drive up here, but worth it to sit on the porch with a nice RC Cola or Classic Coca Cola and just enjoy the views. Also, get a post card!

Mast General Store is unfair to employees. They fire long-time, loyal employees for ridiculous reasons like flashing display lights and then deny them unemployment by LYING about the reasons for termination. If you shop here, you are supporting a company that takes pleasure in ruining peoples lives.

Fantastic place to visit, toys from your childhood, great people, old time candy, drinks. Outlet shoes, clothing, crafts, all sorts of stuff in a country mountain setting. Great restaurant right across from the original store called Over Younder. A must see if you get to go to the area.

So nostalgic Ive spent hours browsing this store while on vacation since l was a little girl. So many unique things to look at and buy. Theres something for everyone. Even if you arent into shopping theres an old fashioned still functioning post office and lots of antiques to look at.

Great throwback to old general store feel with cool and relevant products that the whole family will enjoy. They just added a large knife store and always have great deals on clearance items in the Little Red Schoolhouse. Also check out the Annex down the road.

We like all of the Mast locations, but this is the most scenic. It is basically a old-timey, country themed gift store. Not the mass-produced junk with local city name printed on it sort of gift shop. They also have all the camping supplies you need.

Pet friendly is an understatement. Every employee not only made my wife and I welcome, they all also played, petted and gave our dog treats, with our permission of course. And the memories of pop guns and sligshots WOW. Love this place.
