GOOD WINE might be a little hard to find (unless youre picking up your kid at MS-51). Its not that the shop is tucked away; its that it doesnt stand out -- at least not from the standpoint of signage. But when it comes to wine selection, thats a whole nother story. I picked up a bottle of Fleur -- a Pinot Noir from Carneros Id frankly never tried before -- then promptly walked a few blocks down/up 5th Avenue to Red White & Bubbly to say hello to the folks there. (I live in the neighborhood and work in the same trade, but at the Brooklyn Barrel on 4th Avenue.) At Red White & Bubbly, Mario spotted my bottle of Fleur through a semi-sheer shopping bag and exclaimed "Ive been looking for that wine for years!!!" (I thought for an instant I might be holding some article of ladies lingerie....) Instant rapport ... instant camaraderie (of sorts) ... all based on a happy choice of varietal. And we have Alan and GOOD WINE to thank for it. You could do worse -- MUCH worse -- than follow your nose to GOOD WINE on 5th Avenue at 3rd Street. And while youre at it, kick the tires at MS-51, which has got one hell-of-an Arts program. (I know ... my kids went there before moving on, at the high school level, to Beacon and LaGuardia, both in Manhattan.) Or if youve got no kids to educate, take a closer look at the Old Stone House in Washington Park. Its a minor (but well-preserved) monument to the Battle of Brooklyn (August 27, 1776), which was the largest battle in the Revolutionary War and, unfortunately, a defeat for General George Washington and his Continental Army.
