Went to REI to look for a large tent to go camping with my 2 year old son, wife and I. I had a small tent from them and knowing how well designed it was I was willing to pay a bit extra for something well made. They had a tent I was interested in but we wanted to make sure it would be big enough and easy to set up. So I asked a salesman if we could set it up in store, after he looked around a while for a suitable location (it was a very big tent), he moved around some displays and set it up for us. There is not other store that would do this for a customer and while we could have likely spent much less on a Coleman tent or field and stream tent, we wouldnt have been able to see it setup in person and wouldnt get back dividends etc. This is why REI is a great store. They really help you make the right decision and have knowledgeable staff

Went in here for my first time just to get a couple small things for my morning ride that i wouldnt have time to get at my usual bike store. Place is nice and have many things to choose from. The only issue i had here was during check out. The cashier kept trying to talk me into their store membership and i kept saying no thanks several times and he kept insisting me to join, after telling him that i dont want it and that i get bigger discounts at my usual bike store, STILL trying to tell me to join! I DONT WANT TO JOIN, I was so frustrated after i left i wish i went back to return everything i bought. He ended up putting the form in my bag hoping i would join, which made the situation worse i didnt even bother with it. found the first trash can and through it away! will not go back!

I go to the store in Northville all the time and have always had a good experience. The pull tab on my zipper to a new and fairly expensive coat broke off and since I was in the area, I thought I would stop at the Troy location. When I explained what happened, the cashier said "you want us to replace the whole jacket just because the pull tab broke?" I said no, but I want the broken piece replaced since I just bought the jacket. It took them 15 min to find a pull tab that was randomly in a drawer and didnt match the jacket. After being that disrespectful, I will not be returning to this store.

I get most of my backpacking gear here. The prices arent the best but with the year end dividends for members it offsets the prices a bit. I also have their credit card which gives me rebates, another reason I shop here. If it werent for the rebates if probably buy online elsewhere rather than here. Ive gotten some decent prices on sports wear off the clearance rack but likely wouldnt pay full price here. Theres no firearms or firearm supplies here. You will however find things such as kayaks, bicycles, shoes and boots, camping and hiking gear, and sports wear.

Good selection & helpful knowledgeable staff. On my first experience last summer though, the workers were something between very intent and outright cut-throat about sponsoring me for a membership to the point that the guy in the boots department essentially ripped up the paperwork from a lady who assisted me in the backpack department and wrote up his self into a new membership form or what not, to ensure he was listed as the sponsor or receiver of some unknown great commission, instead of her.

Ive been to many REI locations and this one gives a terrible name to the company. The store has a small selection, especially in comparison with other locations. While there I had trouble getting a salesperson to assist me. When I finally did get help I inquired about other sizes in stock and I was told to order online. If I wanted to simply order online I wouldnt have walked into the store. I wouldnt waste my time going to this location ever again.

Overall its my go to place for outdoor stuff. It is far smaller than any REI Ive seen before. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the staff IS pushy as hell when it comes to membership. Its very off-putting. The bike repair guy was real cool about it though. Explained how it works in a way that I couldnt refuse. He went about it as if he was letting me in on their little secret and it was very inviting. It really is a great program.

Helpful and friendly staff. 3 stars for the inventory being low/gone for the things I specifically went there for. It wouldnt be so bad if I hadnt checked online first to make sure they these items were indeed in stock. But 2 out of the 5 items were completely gone. Bummer dude.

I can officially say I will be returning, not only for the selection, but because of the staff. Todd, I believe his name, was extremely helpful and had an overall great attitude about his job. He was so enthusiastic and helped me tremendously when selecting backpacking gear!

very knowledgeable staff, and worth becoming a member for the one-time fee. Gets you guaranteed satisfaction for every item you purchase and annual rebate based on your purchases. Customer satisfaction like nowhere else.

The website told me they had the item in stock. I got there and was told they have so much stuff they could never keep track of it all. I purchased an alternate item and used my dividend so yeah.

Great place to look at gear even if you dont intend to buy, staff is helpful and informative. I do a lot of hiking and camping so I go here a lot for gear that is hard to find other places.

They have a good selection of gear. Its hit or miss whether the associate you talk to actually knows anything. Your best bet is to figure out what you need on your own.

Sent my wife in and she was treated horrible by the 2 lady staff members in footwear. Store is nice looking but the rude treatment was a turn off.
