These are the rudest, most ignorant people I have ever attempted to do business with. I called to ask if they had the part I needed, and walked over there from work to buy it after they said they did. When I arrived, I waited several minutes until someone returned to say they didnt have it. Instead of admitting his mistake (lie) about telling me they had it, he said (lying again) that someone had just (in the last ten minutes) bought it. While on my 15-min break from work, I waited while he contacted the other store to find out if they had what I needed. He said they did. So, I proceeded to walk across campus to the other store. When I arrived, OOPS, he had one, but its damaged. He said that he could get me one the next day (Friday and I want my bike for the weekend). So, I came back the next day, and OOPS again, he forgot it. After another frantic call to the other location (the one that I went to in the first place), miracle of miracles NOW they have one. He told them "Dont sell that..." I also needed a tool, which I heard him tell them. So, again, I walked across campus. They had my part, but not my tool. I began to express my frustration, since I could have purchased the tool at the other shop before I walked AGAIN across campus. A couple of the guys, I guess, didnt like my tone, and I heard one of them calling me "lady" and making obnoxious remarks about me. One of them stormed out of the back (verbally AND physically aggressive toward me) and plopped his "personal" tool down on the counter for me to borrow. I said very quietly and politely, "Thank you for the gesture, but I wont be coming back here." He proceeded to insult me to others loudly across the store, and I couldnt take any more, so I confronted him loudly and angrily (which I have NEVER done before). Although, I clearly heard what he said, he denied it. In spite of the nice woman who had someone fetch the tool from the other store and tried to make amends, I will not set foot in that store again. If it were the only bike store on the planet, I would simply never ride again. Do NOT give them your business. At least one of them is even frightening! I now have blisters (wasnt wearing my walking shoes) and Ill have to wait until I get home to find out if I have the right parts...

I had a good experience at this local bike shop. I think this is a good bike shop but you should understand that there are generally two types of bike shops out there. Most people expect the 1st type and are disappointed when they come here. Let me explain: The most common bike shop is your clean, commercial bike shop stocked with primarily new bicycles. These are the bike shops you see everywhere. They are nice - usually there is a grungy mechanic working behind the counter, but that is about it as far as grime and grease. They stock new items and new bikes, all of which are usually pretty expensive and decent. The sales people at these stores are generally very nice and happy to show customers whatever items they have expressed interest in purchasing. These shops are friendly towards novice and advanced bike enthusiasts alike. The second type of bike shop is one with lots of used bicycles, lots of spare used parts, and a number of grungy mechanics. Much of the equipment found at these shops is used although they can often get new items by ordering. The people at these stores are usually more problem-oriented than sales oriented, may sometimes come off as gruff or rude because they do not necessarily cater to the customer, or present solutions that the customer may not want. These shops generally cater more to those who do work with and on bikes, have better knowledge of bike components, etc., although they certainly can provide novice bike riders with excellent service as well. Please understand that the above is a gross generalization. Given that, CSBS is obviously the second type of bike shop. There is nothing that makes one type of shop better than the other. Both types of shops can provide customers with what they need. However, your experience is going to differ significantly depending on what you want, what you are expecting, and the types of shops you are used to visiting. Anyhow, I can say that CSBS is a fine shop, they are not rip-off artists (as far as I could tell), and they dont seem overpriced. The owner was nice and helpful, and ended up helping me out with my bike issue without any charge. Hope this helps shed some light on bike shops, this shop, and prior reviews.

I had read all the negative reviews on CSBS and was quite wary, but I was also desperate for a ride, so I took a chance. I called in the afternoon before my ride and reserved a bike, asking for their best road bike and giving them my dimensions. The woman on the phone was quite pleasant. When I showed up the next morning, my ride was waiting. All their rental bikes are funky, so if youre riding the latest and greatest in carbon, etc. youll need to lower your expectations. I recalibrated and found my rental to be quite adequate, pedal cages and all. The woman at the counter was very friendly. Our ride was great, but I was still a bit nervous about what would happen when I returned the bike -- would I get nickel and dimed to death? Again, I was very pleased. They checked the bike for obvious damage and finding none, they quickly returned my $65 cash deposit. Also, we went a bit longer than our minimum rental time, for which we had paid in advance, but we were not charge any additional amount. Lessons learned: Be nice to them and theyll probably treat you professionally in return. Their selection of decent road bikes is limited, so call ahead and get there early. Bring your own helmet -- they have funky rentals for an additional $5 (Michigan has no helmet law). What you see is what you get. No seat or pedal swapping. For a nice ride, head out Huron River Drive.

I went here today to get a cheap new tire. A very nice employee directed me to what they had, told me they were $14.99 each, and helped me deliberate over them until I arrived at a final selection, which I took to the register. There, I grabbed a few more items. I was then charged $19.99 for the tire. As it was a low quality tire, I didnt think it was worth that, and being a starving student, I really didnt feel like I could pay that, so I asked them to honor their word. Id already picked out other items based on the fact that I was going to buy the tire there and I didnt feel like throwing the whole shopping effort down the drain. They adamantly refused to honor what they had told me, even when I informed them that I would post my bad experience online. They specifically told me it wasnt worth the $5 to honor their word and protect their reputation. So, I went to another shop to get my tire ($15) and moral customer service. I recommend you do the same for all your bicycling needs. This shop has a monopoly on the students and that comes through in their prices and behavior.
