Excellent staff, terrible store. Without exception the staff and employees of the store have been stellar. I love them. The problem is that this store is a large version of a corner store... It kind of has some things but not if you are actually going to cook anything more than something onions, garlic, cut-up carrots, frozen peas, and perhaps a little parsley on the side of two pounds of skinless chicken thighs. Stewed tomatoes? well... they have diced will that work? Spices? Pre-mixed "authentic" versions of spices without regional choices like Zatarains or staples like ground rosemary. The meat department is "meh." The "boxed salads" are uniformly black and rotten already. Bread choices are iffy. Seafood is all formerly frozen... and the $11 for 12 oz of shrimp was frostbitten. Do you like cheese? besides some really decent two-pound blocks of extra-sharp cheddar or something that might have looked fancy on a cheese plate in 1984? And despite serious attention... the place needs to be deep cleaned. Knowing the staff there... they want to do this. I go there anyway because the other one is a mile away, but Im honest when Im saying that any food requiring actual cooking should probably be dumped. If you want a snack, perhaps some food for Passover, AND dig the conveyor belt... though you are totally set... I might add that the smoky-smelling liquor store has the most AMAZING woman working there. extremely pleasant. Sorry it was recently on fire. Looking forward to this store getting a makeover and realizing that the old guards replacements like to cook.

Now branded Shaws, not that there is any difference.. Overdue for a remodel. Because this store is relatively small, they shrank the isles and made the shelves uncomfortably tall. This is the only supermarket in the area still having bundle pick up; Drive up and they will load your groceries directly into your car. Merchandise identical to all other Shaws/Star. Newtonville was the second location for Star, openned about 1933, this is the third store in Newtonville. Shaws is owned by Supervalu.

Be sure to check your dates... this store is aweful at pulling expired product, especially produce, juices, and meat. Also this Star location is way more expensive then other Stars... some items are double what you would pay at Stop and Shop just 5 minutes away. Buyer beware.

As a kid, I thought the grocery conveyor belt was the coolest thing. Going home as an adult, its still pretty cool. :) No gluten free stuffing for thanksgiving, though, so we had to go to whole foods anyway.

Sad selection but their conveyer belt system is awesome and a redeeming quality. You can have your bags loaded onto a belt so that you can pick up your stuff directly from the car

It is a small market with limited variety. They do a good job of fitting a lot of stuff in a limited space. Very clean, well organized

The categories of food make no sense, the toilet paper is next to the dairy but the people here are really nice.
