I own a specialty store with 35 employees and a 32,000 square foot building. Portobello Road is my favorite store in the world. I visit every time I am on the island. It begins with the music being played in the store. Not radio, or random songs, but really good music with a great deal of thought behind every song. And thought behind the selection of books, signs, toys, gifts, art, music. The actual selection is not the point. They are not connected by a subject or a category. They are connected by a point of view. I can feel the thought behind every decision to place every item on the shelf. And it all works with the feeling behind the layout, and,,, the music! Browse through this store, and you will enjoy seeing things you dont see anywhere else. You will enjoy the experience. And what more do you want from a vacation store than a supremely enjoyable visit?

Portobello Road isnt a very big store, but the proprietor seems to have filled it up with stuff scientifically designed to part me from my money. There are a few books, maybe 50-100 titles, of which I either had read or wanted to read about 80%. There were New Yorker cartoon notecards and refrigerator magnets. There were vintage signs and framed photos, beautiful home accessories, and irresistible notebooks and other stationery products and gifts. It required incredible strength of will to get out of there for less than $100. You have been warned.

Truly my favorite shop on Marthas Vineyard. Portobello Road offers such a fantastic assortment of merchandise at all price points that is so wonderfully displayed. Its such a feast for your eyes one can spend hours in there shopping!
