Banfield Pet Hospital is located inside PetSmart in Lexington. I left this same review under Banfield Pet Hospital, but I know more people are going to see it here. If you want impersonal sales pitches, GO HERE! These people were awful. The medicine was overpriced, the staff was a bit uncomfortable with our cat, and they were far more interested in bilking us out of as much money as possible than actually helping us care for our cat. We took our cat here on the weekend after the Christmas holidays because we were concerned about her ear infection and what seemed to be a skin issue. We were afraid to wait longer because she was scratching in one area so much that she had removed a small patch of fur. We waited over an hour and a half (and they admitted a few people ahead of us who had arrived after we did--and its walk-ins only). They didnt have an area where we could sit away from overzealous dogs; though our cat was in a carrier, she was very nervous and already upset because we drove from thirty minutes or so away. The dogs didnt help. After we finally got in, they spent about half the time, both the "doctor" and the assistant, pitching their wellness program, which is basically insurance for pets. Its a great idea, but its so expensive that we told them up front that they werent interested. That didnt stop them from repeating their pitch at least twice, though. They were pretty good with our cat, though I think they must be more comfortable with dogs. Our cat is unusually easygoing and affectionate, but they were still a little stiff and weird with her. Not only that, but the "small skin sample" they took was at least two centimeters long and about half a centimeter wide. That doesnt sound big, but the raw and bleeding patch of skin looked way worse than what she had ripped away herself. What they didnt tell us was how to prevent her from reacting to the new (worse) irritation--or that it could even happen. We let her out at home and checked on her about an hour later only to find that she had scratched and worried at the irritation so that it was nearly twice the size it had been before, completely bloody, and raw. I dont expect clairvoyance, but when we called the emergency line for a local veterinarian because we were afraid she was going to rip through to something vital, he told us this was expected behavior. He also gave us several options for keeping her from making it worse--all for free. He recommended that we follow these instructions rather than paying the hefty emergency fee on top of the exorbitant fees at Banfield. Because these are our first pets as adults, as weve lived in apartments for several years, we were unfortunately ripe for the picking. They got over $200 out of us by the end, which included an overpriced antibiotic, overpriced ear cleaner, a fungal culture (because they suspect ringworm), the overpriced office visit, and an overpriced antibiotic injection. For example, the antibiotic ear drops were $45, while elsewhere they are at most $24 and often on sale for $20. Stay away from that place. While you might say theyre well within their rights to overcharge for medication and that were naive for being upset about it, at least be aware that this place is far, far more interested in your wallet than in helping you care for your pet. They know that people are willing to shell out money to make sure their pets are ok, and they definitely take advantage. (first posted 12/28/09, edited a typo 7/10.)

Took my dog to be groomed at 8:00 a.m. By mid-afternoon when I had not heard back from them, I called to see if she was finished (had been given a 3-4 hour time frame). The lady on the phone told me that there was no dog there with my pets name or description. I assured her that I had dropped my dog off there that morning. She insisted she was correct and that she would "check the tapes". I told her I would be there in 10 minutes to pick up my dog & she was welcome to review the tapes in that time. When I arrived they told me that my dog was not there & suggested that maybe I had taken her to a vet or another grooming location. I assured them that I had not and pointed out a groomer that had been there earlier in the day when I had dropped off my dog. That groomer replied "Ive never seen her before in my life." (Not to me, but about me so I could hear). They then got a manager I assume to try and convince me that I was wrong. The manager once again said that my dog was not there but she would check the tapes....whatever that means. I could see her walk through the double doors into the back and stand and talk with other workers while pointing at me, but never looking for my dog. When she returned, she simply said my dog was not there. I explained that my dog was 80 lbs, black and wearing a collar with her name and that I didnt think she would be easily overlooked and if she didnt want to go and look, I would go look in the back for myself. She finally went back and returned with my dog in less than a minute. She explained they had checked her in that morning under the wrong name. That mistake is understandable, what is not understandable is why they felt the need to treat me as a crazy person who dropped off an imaginary dog instead of simply going to the back and actually checking to see if the dog was there instead of saying she wasnt or continuing to reference "the tapes" that they were going to check. This would have saved a 30 minute debacle and prevented the entire issue entirely. I will not return to a place with such horrendous customer service. I had overlooked the way I had seen some of the groomers handle and treat dogs they were grooming and had also dealt with less than stellar haircuts on my own dog, but this was the final straw for me. I would suggest anywhere else for pet grooming services.

My sixteen year old cat has been missing since February 2010. I have visited nearby animal shelters and two humane societies as well as searched classified ads. She was deaf and was not one to stray from home. I believe that an angry neighbor took her by force. Last night, I believe I found her on the website belonging to Lexington Humane Society. But, viewing doesnt start til noon. I noted that the animals are also taken to PetSmart in Pavilon which opens at nine. So I made a long distant phone call and asked if they had an orange cat there. The PetSmart employee refused to answer me. Would not utter a simple yes or no. How lazy is that? Now, I will have to wait til noon to call LHS to inquire if my cat is still there or not. Possibly, I will have to make an hour long trip to Lexington just to see if she is there. As these people will not answer my questions by phone. A bunch of heartless, lazy @@@@ employees if you ask me. That is my experience with PetSmart. I would also like to add that I filed a Lost Report on this cat with LHS in March. Why was I not contacted?

Before I say anything, I want to urge you to not let bad people ruin an opportunity for an animal to have a good home. That said, I have never had such a strange experience when trying to adopt an animal. Was I blatantly lied to twice about the details of adoption? I feel like I was. All of my attempts (phone calls, visits) amounted to squat and the animal I wanted to take home with me disappeared out from under my nose, which seemed fishy to me, but whatever. The point I want to make is that there is either poor training for the employees, or everyone here has an ulterior motive. I have never been so confused by any stores staff as I was by Petsmart in Hamburg. I must say that a couple of the PAWS representatives are just fantastic people who really do all they can because they truly have the animals best interest in their heart. I really wish I could say the same in regards to the actual Petsmart Hamburg staff.
