called and asked about a 2002 Avalanche they had in stock. They said it ran well and is in good shape. I drove several hours to look at it. It ended up being a piece of crap. Good shape huh?? Heres the list of problems after a 5 minute test drive: Front shocks are shot - bounces around big time - unsafe to drive: pulls to the left - alignment obviously off: pulls to the left when braking - obvious brake problem and unsafe to drive - both mirrors not even attached - just barely sitting of the mount hanging on by the wires, and they wouldnt adjust up or down - unsafe to drive: back seat wouldnt fold forward - which is necessary to access and increase the pickup bed area to fit a 4x8 sheet - a pinnacle part of what makes an Avalanche unique! Yeah its in good shape all right. And then to boot, it was obvious the salesman apparently didnt need or want my business: he was not friendly at all, didnt even smile once. Wanted above retail price for a piece of crap and offered below dealer trade in price for my vehicle which had no problems that would affect driving... I will never even look at a vehicle from this place ever again, let alone buy one. This clown salesman ruined that chance. I hope they sleep well at night knowing they are obviously trying to rip people off... I dont know if he was just a salesman or an owner, but man, he sure gives that place a bad name... my advice: GO SOMEWHERE / ANYWHERE BESIDES HAWKEYE AUTO

This was by far the worst car shopping experience I have ever had. When I wanted to look at a car the "salesperson" handed me the key and said nothing. While taking the car for a test drive I noticed the brake pads and possibly the rotors needed to be replaced. When I went back in to negotiate purchasing this used car I sat down with the same "salesperson." I began by asking for a carfax or autocheck report, which he refused. He claimed they do not provide these reports. I went forward by bringing up the problem with the brakes in an effort to bring the sticker price down. He did not acknowledge my concerns about the brakes and simply said, "6700." Is this how they negotiate? I cannot believe how unhelpful and unwilling to communicate this "salesperson" was. If youre looking for a good deal and a pleasant car buying experience, you will find neither at Hawkeye Auto.

They have some slimy business practices. I bought a vehicle from them that only ran for 2500 mi. They had replaced the tires but didnt bother with the spare. They had replaced the spark plugs so that when I replaced the spark plugs (which were not the correct gap!) whose condition I didnt know 200 mi later, no fouling was present, even though it was burning oil at a rate of at least 1 quart every 200 mi. The engine had a worn main bearing and at least one piston ring was close enough to being shot to cause a misfire 2500 mi after I bought the vehicle. There were some other problems that they really could feign innocence on, but the presented problems resulted in the vehicle being scrapped. Just be patient and look for a private seller. Bought a truck there a few weeks ago. Drove clear from Des Monies to check it out, I called ahead of time and asked if the truck and any flaws or dents or mechanical problems and the the answer to all was no its in great condition. Drove up and it really was in pretty good shape, it did have a chipped windshield, rust on the bumper, broke interior door panel, dent in the door, a few scuffs in the paint, and the power windows in the back didnt work. I can fix all of these things my self for cheap so i was not detoured by that. This truck was well taken care of and they are very reasonably priced compared to most other places. I looked for a truck for 6 months and this was the best deal both in quality and price. 7-8k truck.

OK, so i got the 2000 honda accord and tested driving it. I felt like i needed more information so i took the car to King Kars for vehicle inspection. In the end, the car needs timing belt change, water pump change, air bag test, engine oil is leaking and also the driver seat is broken. It can cost me at least $1000 which is quoted by the shop. I took back the car to Hawkeye and asked negotiation. So i told them the problem the car is having and they did not even bother what i have told them. The car was priced $4995, and the least they could give me is $4850. This is ridiculous because they did not even care about the problem and wanted to sell an unsafety car to customer. I suggest not to come back again .

Havent bought anything from them for a while but felt the need to give them some positive rep. We purchased a vehicle from them a few years back and had no issues with the car, the guy who runs it is straight forward and theres not a lot of bs going on. We almost bought a second vehicle from them a while ago but decided to have a mechanic put it up on a lift for us to check it out before buying, and the guy who runs Hawkeye agreed no issue. Once we found out it had too many issues for the asking price, and couldnt make a deal, he even refunded our deposit to hold the car. Its a true as-is dealership, you just need to know that going in. Bring someone who knows about cars or take it to a mechanic before buying.

Went there on 10/2/2011 and they were trying to charge me $600 over blue book in excellent condition for dealers on a car that had really bad crunchie brakes and bald tires. He would not come down $600, well mr hawkeye I found the exact same car 1 year newer and bigger engine, with the same amount of milage for the same price minus the crunchie brakes and new tires, will never waste my time and milage on you. Also my experience was so bad, I informed my boss who lives in CR and buys a car once per year because he travels a lot, not to go there also. (He was thinking about it)

***I THINK MOST OF THE BAD REVIEWS HERE IS BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT DIRT CHEAP/LOW VAULE CARS AND EXPECTED IT TO RUN GOOD. HAWKEYE AUTO SELLS LOW VALUE CAR UP TO MID RANGE. We bought a mini van yesterday, we took it to a mechanic and paid to get it looked at. Usually when we buy used cars, some small things needed to be fixed. This one was perfect! nothing was wrong with it. Sales Rep was very nice! I would buy vehicles from here again.

You can trust Hawkeye. They only fix what needs to be fixed. The prices they charge are reasonable. Its not cheap, but much less expensive than going to a dealership. The point is you are paying less, but the quality of work is comparable. Also, you are talking to the owner or the mechanic doing the work not to a service writer on commission.
