Update 10/21/11 - You can read my first bike purchase in the 2009 updates below ...THIS update is regards to my SECOND bike purchase from Nebo Ridge Bicycles done on 10/21/2011. This second mountain bike purchase at Nebo Ridge Bicycles in Carmel Indiana counts as one of the THE BEST buying experiences I have had in 47 years. After purchasing the Kona Fire Mountain (see my 2009 update below) and after riding Town Run Trail Park a couple times a week and getting serious about riding, I decided to drop in an inquire about stepping up to a better bike. Floor salesperson Brian was courteous and took careful note of my desire to get a mountain bike with a full suspension and yet not break the bank. Brian led me to a demo bike that was coming up for sale and that was currently being used by Chris (aka "Big Daddy") who offered to bring the demo bike to the store so I could take it to Town Run for a test ride. Chris thoroughly explained the bike and carefully measured and adjusted the bike for my test ride. This demo bike was a dream bike - a Niner "RIP 9" - which brand new cost roughly nine times more than my current entry level ride. Needless to say the demo ride on the Niner blew me away! The full suspension really helped my 47 year old back deal with the bumps. I GPSed the test ride, and discovered that I rode the whole trail 12 minutes faster, didnt need to stop once, and went an average speed of almost 5mph faster than my old bike. The RIP 9 was priced at about 60 percent of a new bike, which put in in range of my budget. A few days later, I committed to buying it and Chris told me it would be about a week to ready the bike because he wanted to put some new parts on it for me. I arrived for the pickup and again was blown away by Chris and his attention to me, and for helping me understand the function of this amazing "new" bike I was buying. Chris took an hour to show me the bike and detailed the $500 of new parts he put on the bike, helped me install clip-on pedals, gave me all the old parts he took off, and walked me to my car to load the bike. This was the most thoughtful, fantastic purchase experience Ive had in a while - thanks to Chris, Brian and store owner Tim. 5 stars! 04/20/09 Ive been in twice to talk with store manager Jonathan and I am very impressed with his knowledge and friendly demeanor. He even let me test ride a couple of Kona mountain bikes I liked, in the parking lots and streets behind the store. In addition to a brief measurement before the test rides, at the end of my test rides Jonathan and another employee asked me to ride the bike back and forth in front of them, to check the correct size. They could have sold me the 20-inch bike I tested and thought was fine, but they insisted I could use a larger not-in-stock 22 inch model which would be a perfect fit. Nice to know I am coming first here and not a focus on them selling something quickly. I am a big internet buyer for other things but will purchase here locally because the price is competitive and you cannot buy this kind service online. ...05/01/09 ok, a week later I picked up my new bike and store owner Tim helped me with accessories and also installing these accessories. I also bought a car bike rack and Tim showed me how to put it on my car. Great experience. Will report back in approx 45 days for final follow up. ...06/24/09 summary update on my purchase experience: Just got my mountain bike back from the approx 45 day free checkup/inspection they offer on new bike sales. I left my bike in the shop for a week while I was out of town and when I got back Nebo Ridge called to say the checkup was complete and the bike was good to go. My overall experience was excellent. 5 stars.

The first day I walked into Nebo they reeled me in--I knew nothing about cycling, cycle cross, mountain biking, bike fitting, nutrition--I was as new as a newbie could be. But on day one, something happened that got me too come back--people skills, then day two their knowledge resonated with me--the ethos was apparent, the community values were of the highest--they did not treat me like a cyclist, they treated me as a person. I enjoy fantastic customer service, but I am a loyal customer, for they are a loyal business to me. Their prices are higher than retail commercial stores, but what you gain is off the charts--anyone can buy a bike on-line, China has them cheap, huge stores have cheap ones--but Nebo has quality members and they are a part of a special tribe up there--you get what you pay for, not just a bike, outfits, helmets, shoes--you see and learn first hand from cyclists who have been and biked just about everywhere--they walk the talk, and I felt they walked in my shoes at one time or another. I have the highest praise for a group of hardworking people, who became my friends. I am the biggest evangelist on the experience I had/have at Nebo--plus they have super espresso up there as well--5 stars is a short sell--more like a million, that is how I felt when I went in and that is what they have created with me and so many others--it is more than a grade A bike shop--it is a grade A people place, who happens to sell bikes and equipment.

Tried to buy a $2800 bike that was 2yrs old and still unsold for my wife and really just wanted an excuse to feel like we were getting friendly service so I asked if they could toss in a $23 bottle and cage. I know margins are about 40% on new bikes so asking less than 1% free was a slam dunk and good excuse for me to support a local shop. The manager actually acted like a real jerk and said no, that he could only do an $8 bottle/cage combo. It was so petty we walked on principle. The salesperson could only shrug as we left. The same manager made the comment earlier that "youre touching the wrong bike" as I looked at a mens bike while shopping that same day. Apparently you cannot touch the mens bikes if youre shopping for womens bikes. If it was just a poor salesman I probably wouldnt leave a review that impacts business, but this was all dealings with the manager. Hes the person who represents your shop. I really wanted to overpay for a 2016 bike as the 2018s were coming out. Digging your feet in over $15 on a $2800 purchase just says "we will never help you with any issue" to the customer.

I was getting ready to go on a ride and I noticed my wheel was wobbling a bit, so I took it in to the shop just to have it looked at to make sure it was safe to ride on. The bike tech in the back dropped everything he was doing, immediately inspected and trued my wheel, and sent me on my way! He also took the time to explain what he did and how to prevent it from happening again. Great service, nice people, highly recommended!
