I was really excited to visit here after reading such good reviews. When my friends and I arrived we had a bit of a wait, which we spent in the bookstore. It was kind of cramped, but fine. Our waitress was polite enough, but my issue was with how the staff handled my food allergy. I never have gone to a restaurant before where I felt like an onion allergy was a problem. I simply asked for the Spinach Turkey sandwich with no onion, and aparently that was an impossible request without also getting no spinach on my sandwich. When they said no because the spinach and onion was sautéed together I asked if they could just do regular spinach or any other lettuce or greens on the sandwich and I got more nos again, and the waitress suggested I pick a different sandwich. I am very frustrated with how inflexible the kitchen was with my food restrictions and do not recommend this place for anyone with food allergies or dietary restrictions.

Amazing bookstore. I have been to many, in Chicago, other suburbs, and my hometown of Boston. None--and that includes all the haughty taughty ones in Harvard Square, Cambridge (and you know the ones I mean)--compare to the homey atmosphere of Town House Bookseller, perched atop a side street in lovely St Charles, IL. Shelves create tiny nooks for browsing, and you are never beyond the clattering of china and forks from the adjoining cafe. It is a place to rouse the mind, and the appetite. Worth your drive to St Charles, IL, free parking (about 20 spaces) in a lot immediately across the street. Highly recommended.

Great place for lunch and book browsing, if they dont have it they can order it for you but the best part is seeing what the experienced book sellers have chosen to display. The restaurant is top-notch, everything is fresh and delicious from the daily quiche to the desserts and the salad dressing, weve always had a great meal there. Fast, friendly service, the only down-side is it can be a bit crowded and due to the hard wood floor and furniture it can get a bit noisy. Still its a favorite for the food and service!

It truly doesnt get any better than Town House Books if youre looking for a friendly, personal book shopping experience! From the moment I stepped in the doorway, I knew this was a one-of-a-kind treasure and I am beyond grateful for the welcoming experience! If you love great books and a fabulous cup of Joe, run, dont walk, to this cozy nook. Thank you Heidi for giving me the opportunity to share my new book with you! You are a gem! Susan Day

I really wish this place was good. They have a great location near the river, and nice outdoor seating for the warm months. Unfortunately, I have given this place two separate encounters and both times deeply disappointed and hurt. Service is beyond poor, rude remarks from staff, and overall extremely unwelcoming. Ill take my café business over to Arcedium Coffee House across the river where they have some manners.

Awful experience here. There was a hair on my sandwich, they took it back and gave me another one but then my friends sandwich came and then hers had a hair on it. She had one bite until she saw the hair. They didnt even bother removing at least one of the hairy sandwiches off of the bill. Our server didnt seem like he knew what he was doing or how to handle the hair situation. Will never EVER come here again.

My colleagues and I had a fantastic lunch here. We did have a 40 minute wait for a table during lunch hour on a Wednesday. I guess that, in and of itself, speaks to the quality of the food, service, and the overall experience. Its worth both the wait and drive into Saint Charles! I will return!

Awesome place! Im not from around the area, but this bookstore felt homely and personal. There are little suggestions and notes as well as a great selection that is bound to have something for you. I would love to stop here in the future.

"Walking into Town House Books is like something from out of a story. There are personalized reviews on sticky notes. The cafe attached is adorable. It really gives that small town feel. Its a cant miss of Chicago."
