First off, I love mom & pop stores and I would much rather support a place like this than Barnes and Nobel, even if it means shelling out a few extra bucks... if they were nice! Unfortunately I have to concur with the previous reviews! I walked in this store and I tried to say hello to the lady behind the counter and she just looked at me and went back to what she was doing. I had a book in my hand and I got a text message so I set the book down and began to respond only to immediately and very harshly be told that I was not allowed to write down book titles. She then went on a harangue about people who write down titles and never come back to buy and their shop is just trying to survive. I told her I completely understand and that I love the selection she has but I dont have money for the three books I want so I would like to get the one book and come back for the others. She told me she has never seen me before so she didnt think I would be coming back, but when you want something and dont have the money you should put it on hold. *note that she did not offer to put it on hold* I told her that information was much more helpful than the aggressive attitude she started out with, to which she snarkily replied that this shop has been here a long time and they are just trying to survive. I told her that I no longer wished to purchase anything from someone who is so rude and she said "I knew that was going to happen." Really? You knew that being rude to people would drive them out of your shop? Shocking! If your shop is trying to survive then why offend a customer who has already said they would like to buy something? I am very sad that such a cute little shop has such a terrible attitude!

I had basically the same experiences as every other reviewer. I walked in today through the open door, said "hello" to the lady behind the counter who merely nodded at me. I was the only customer in the store, two employees (presumably one was the owner) and neither of them offered to help me. I browsed for a bit. I was going to text my bf to see if a particular toy would be a good gift for his friends 1-yos birthday this weekend. Suddenly the staff cared about my presence. The man asked if there was something he could help me with as the woman reprimanded me for having my phone out when they have a small "no electronics" sign on their door. I honestly didnt see the sign, as the door was propped open and I walked right past it. The man was attempting to be friendly, but I was so thrown off by the situation that I just left. Definitely need to improve customer service. After all these reviews, Im not sure how this place stays open. The woman was definitely rude. Put signs on the walls inside if youre going to prop the door open all the time, this way your customers see it. And be nicer about explaining the policy to them. You catch more flies with honey.

Im glad to see that Im not the only one who felt so awful when shopping here. My 7-yo son and I have a policy: he sees something he likes and I take a picture of it then he earns it. I take the picture because he had ADHD and sometimes he cant hold on to a memory and gets really upset. The owner immediately came over to me and scolded me, then said theres a sign on the door. 1. The door was propped open; 2. the sign is tiny. I understand why a small business owner would not want anyone shopping around for a better price on Amazon, but that wasnt what we were doing--and it seems to me that many other people have the same experience. There are plenty of reasons to be using your phone in a bookstore beyond price comparison, and in my case its a coping mechanism for a very anxious boy who needs some reassurance. Shame on them for jumping to conclusions. I returned to the store last weekend because we were at the farmers market and my kids wanted to go in, and I saw her chiding several people. We actually purchased two small trinkets for the kids and she impatiently waited for us to leave so she could shut the door behind us. Such strange behavior.

I experienced similar things to all of the other low reviews posted here. 1) The shop feels unwelcoming and uncomfortable from the moment you step in; 2) they have a very small selection that hardly ever changes; 3) the people who work there do no greet you, but they watch you like a hawk the entire time; 4) if you fail to see their "no electronics" sign posted, they are extremely rude about pointing it out the instant your phone is in your hand, even if you arent doing anything with it. One time I got my phone out to send a picture of a book to ask if it was a good idea for a gift, and I was angrily told "No electronics. There is a sign on the door." When I chose to leave, the woman then followed me all the way out and slammed the door behind me, which had been propped open the whole time I was inside. She then re-opened it when I was halfway down the block. I love supporting local bookstores, but I will not be taking my business back to this one.

Wolf in sheeps clothing. A friend and I went in to check out the selection and were really surprised at all the wonderful titles. We didnt see the "No Electronics" sign honestly, and once my friend pulled out her phone to take a photo of a book cover to see if her fiancee wanted the book, the woman swooped down like a hawk and told us we were not allowed to take pictures or use our phones at all. After a couple of minutes my friend found a couple other titles she wanted to remember so I gave her a notebook and pen out of my bag. About 5 seconds later the woman came back over and said "Hey I have to go somewhere and close the store so you need to leave" and escorted us out of the store! We strolled the farmers market and noticed she was there, door still open, Open sign still up, watching our every move. So instead we walked down the street to West Side Books, a place that will forever and always have our business, and bought several titles there.

I agree with the other negative reviews here... I love supporting small business, but I honestly hope this place goes under soon so that something better can open up in its place! I was on lunch (ate at Seras Ramen Enclave, great food and service) and decided to go here because I had some time left to kill. I got a work email and was reading it and the owner/clerk ran over and told me Im not allowed to take pictures of books or have electronics out in the store. I told her I was checking an email and she just pointed to a sign on the door... After asking why they have this obscure policy, it basically came down to the fact they dont want you to see reviews or prices of the items they sell. I always check reviews of products no matter where Im shopping, and dont care usually if it is cheaper on Amazon, Ill purchase it local, just want to know if its a junk product. Lost my business for good and I hope they lose enough to shut down.
