I have friends all over the area who are out of work. I even inquired about a job there even though my skills are technical. Down the street there are several agencies giving away food to people without jobs. Homeless, taxpaying US Citizens getting handouts while 40 workers cant prove their citizenship. Target workers in Walnut Creek quit after questions about immigration status By Matt OBrien Contra Costa Times Posted: 12/09/2009 07:47:42 AM PST Updated: 12/09/2009 07:47:48 AM PST WALNUT CREEK — More than 40 employees at the downtown Target store quit their jobs after an internal probe raised suspicions about their immigration status, according to lawyers who have met with the workers. Managers summoned the overnight crew of the North Main Street department store to meetings last month and gave workers the chance to prove their eligibility to work in the United States by bringing in the proper documents, the lawyers and Target representatives say. Most of the questioned workers voluntarily resigned, Target spokeswoman Kate Gillen said. The Minnesota-based retailer would not say how many workers left the Walnut Creek store, but advocates for the employees say it was dozens. "Forty-five people are without a job," said lawyer Rocio Avila of La Raza Centro Legal, a San Francisco legal group pressing Target for more information. "Many of the workers there were long-term workers. There was one gentleman who had been (at Target) for 19 years, and the average was five to six years. These werent temporary workers, seasonal workers for the holiday season. These were loyal workers who had been there for a long time." Avila met with many of the workers and said the group, all of them Spanish speakers, are confused about what happened Nov. 11 and Nov. 12, when supervisors, paychecks in hand, held staff meetings at the beginning of the graveyard shift. It is unclear, she said, why the predominantly Latino overnight shift -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- was targeted while other employees were not. "None of the workers are able to articulate exactly what happened," Avila said. "None of these workers ever got anything in writing. None. Thats a huge red flag." The stores probe of so many of its workers was unusual, especially for a brand-name retailer, but may become more common as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement heightens its enforcement of employers who hire illegal workers, whether knowingly or not. The agency this year has launched civil inspections of hundreds of California employers, though Gillen made clear that the Target store was not one of them.

The Target in Walnut Creek is a huge store, but certainly not the biggest Target Ive ever encountered, however it offers more than the Pleasant Hill and Pittsburg stores. The Walnut Creek Target has seen a couple renovations over the years, the most recent of which now features an expanded grocery section, with fresh produce, meat and a huge refridgerated section. Its a step above their typical offerings. In the past I couldnt grocery shop at Target without missing certain basic items, now its just about possible to do all grocery shopping there. Its not a full grocery store replacement though, and you may have to substitute some brands for Target alternatives. The store is well lit, well stocked, and has numerous employees available at checkout and customer service. The Target food court offers Pizza Hut Express, popcorn, hotdogs, icees, etc and in addition, theres also an in-store Starbucks and a fairly sizable seating area. Parking can be deceiving as theres both outside and underground parking, directly underneath the store. The underground parking is huge. Unfortunately the underground parking isnt as well lit as I would have liked. Theres escalators from underground parking both for people and your cart. Someone mentioned Target is two stores and you have to go up and down between them, which isnt true. The store itself is all on one level. There is a separate garden center thats split off from the main store. Both Target and the garden center are at street level. If I had one complaint, is thats the store could be even bigger. Its sizable already, but it would be nice if they offered even more. I really dont see how they could expand though, without adding a secord story.

First and foremost I love Target, so I gave them 4 stars. I decided to apply during the Christmas Holiday. Got the job, loved the co-workers and most managers, liked what I was doing up until I was assigned to work under a supervisor named Richard. Many complaints were circulating about him but, I found him enjoyable to work with until he flashed on me. For the entire two months I was there, all supervisors asked if I was "register trained" Id reply no and NOT ONE took the time to have me trained. Richard, one day, took me to the "beach" as he called it and decided to show me the register. He went through his demonstration so damn quick, I was intimated and that was the extent of my training. He held that against me later telling me I wouldnt be able to stay after the holiday due to my inability to help the guests, was his excuse. Well, Im like, we dont have to wait til after the holiday, I quit now, hell, I dont need Target. I took off my regular job one day because I was so sick, I called in to Target too. I promise you, FOUR different supervisors on four separate occasions questioned me about taking off for that ONE DAY. Then I was in the office one day and another employee call out sick. When the office hung up from her call, they all started bad mouthing the employee. I will NEVER work for these people again. It was the worst experience I ever had for any job, who does that! I promise you headquarters in Hayward doesnt know this is going on. This is the most unprofessional environment and their management and HR office needs a complete overhaul of the people running it. The ladies bathroom wreaks of urine on a constant basis, its HORRIBLE. Im GLAD I quit.

Three words - deeply discounted CLEARANCE. This is one of the bigger stores so you can find good deals on out of season items, whether it be clothes, school supplies, electronics, etc.. A couple of weeks ago, at the start of spring, some scarves were 30-50% off. Also, a couple of times, items were in a clearance section but they were regular-price upon ring up. Both cashiers have given me the discount anyway (most likely another customer probably misplaced the item because it was just that one item on both occasions). Gotta love empowered cashiers. I dont scam the system, but its always nice when the something works in your favor. Every time Ive come to this store, usually on a weekday morning, theres always someone in the Dollar Spot section to greet you and make sure you find everything okay. Its cute because the person always tries to upsell me on Dollar Spot items; I think she has a disability. At any rate, this is a very clean store and I love their Jamba Juice smoothies, which I know they clean the JJ machine on a regular basis (I see it all the time). Also they have a Starbucks here, which is fun, now that Starbucks serves coconut milk.

I bought a cell phone from the electronics dept kiosk manager, Brie Griffin. She was very helpful and happy to sell me a new Android smartphone. I told her I lived in Sacramento and asked if I had any issues if i could return it in Sacramento. She said, "yes, Sacramento is in our district so you can return it". A week later I decided I liked my old iphone better. I went to the local Target and after waiting for 55 minutes i was told by this kiosk manager that there was no way that i could return my phone and it was VERY standard policy that any phone returned had to be done at the store it was purchased at. You can imagine how unhappy I was to find out i had to drive 140 miles round trip to return a phone! Brie Griffin lied to my face. I do not recommended buying a cell phone from Target. I love the store itself but the kiosk (run by Radio Shack) has subcontractors that hold inconsistent hours and some lie to customers to sell a phone.
