First negative experience here but it was all around bad enough to piss me off and motivate me to write this. So as a typical looking SF guy, walking into the store with jeans, hoodie, beard and a $1500 road bike, and volunteering my bag before being noticed is still enough to warrant being shadowed the entire duration of my visit by loss prevention. As I wait for my handle bars to be re-wrapped, I go upstairs with the box for the wrap & labor, a bar light and a mini air pump. I stop and re think the air pump, considering my financial situation at the time, so at the register i tell the clerk that ive changed my mind and to set it aside. He rings me up, I go downstairs and the bike guy demands to see the receipt, and so i give it to him. He notices the clerk did not charge me for labor and then scolds me as though Im trying to steal free labor and demands I go back upstairs. I oblige and let the clerk know, even though he didnt ring it up, Im not pissed with him but the attitude of the bike guy downstairs and how he handled that situation. As i make my way back up to retrieve my backpack, Mr loss prevention comes up with the air pump in hand and asks if this is the one i brought up stairs, as though I meant to steal it by giving it to the clerk when i first stepped up to the counter. What was the reason for you to ask me if that was the one I was looking at or whatever considering I gave it to the clerk instead of setting it aside on a shelf while waiting in line? that whole experience made me feel as though they pegged me as a shop lifter as soon as I came in. Basically, after 5 years and $4,000+ dollars spent there & the presidio store, I will no longer be giving them any more of my money if thats how its going to be, especially considering I did the complete opposite the whole time of what shop lifters would normally do. I have a new perspective for how bad it must feel for anyone who has to deal with that on a daily basis because of whatever stereotype they happen to fall in to. Losing one customer may not mean a lot to a store like Sports Basement, but Id rather go anywheres else and feel like a customer than to feel like a criminal as soon as I walk in to the door with absolute zero just cause. Just some Redneck from the South.

This place is pretty big! Plenty of selection and sports items here. And the prices are reasonable. Staff is friendly and always willing to help. I have spent the last few months searching for BRIGHT ski/snowboard pants and jacket. Ive ordered 13 pieces so far (from online retailers) and FINALLY found the color/style I liked here instead! It wasnt the BEST since I was looking more for snowboard style gear (more baggy) versus ski gear (more fitting) but I do both so its still okay. I noticed many people try to find "stylish" or "fashionable" snow gear but dont realize that its really all about standing out so your friends/family can spot you on the mountain versus typical blue or black gear which blends in with everyone else. So I was looking for either hot pink, fluorescent purple, or highlighter green. But they dont have the previous two in boys/mens and I could only find highlighter green in boys. At any rate, I found BOTH top and bottoms and they look great (and BRIGHT!). Cant be happier (see pictures)! The only problem was that this location didnt have my size (which is incredibly hard for me to find since Im in between a mens XS and boys L/XL. I found a boys large but they didnt have an XL. So they called their Mason St. location and put one on hold for me. I was also able to find a matching bright jacket in my size so that was a win win! All kids apparel happened to be 30% off but that didnt matter since I would have purchased these at full price. Nothing like expecting to pay full price only to get a discount! And even better my friend was a Basementeer so I received another 10% discount. Both items came to over $300 with tax but I only paid $200! Yay! As for other sports items here, they most likely have it all. This place has 5 floors and offers ski/snowboard rentals and plenty of other gear as well. Parking is a tad difficult if youre parking on the street but they supposedly have a parking garage (which I have yet to find).

Went to rent skis the first time, after waiting for an hour in line, I found out they wouldnt get me skis unless I had my boot so they could attach the bindings (Ive done this a few times myself so I wasnt worried about it) the next day I returned early in the morning waited in line for ~30 minutes to rent skis to find they were completely out of anything near my size. Sigh. Not the best experience. I am also an avid cyclist, having tried out a few other shops with hefty price tags, I decided to give the cheaper shop here some business. Mistake. They took off my bottom bracket and put it on backwards, completely against the threading. This caused my entire crank to be really lose, I had to take my bike to another shop to fix everything that they broke. So, how did it get three stars with those experiences? Generally, friendly staff, great prices, and the sales. Oh the sales! I also buy lift tickets here instead of in Tahoe, saves me ~30 dollars per trip since I dont go frequently enough to warrant a season pass.

I liked it at first but had a really bad service experience. Good: They stock CrossFit stuff. They stock a lot of stuff, the good stuff. Bad: You have to check your bags. They assume everyone is a thief. Not a lot of smaller sizes. Workers dont know what they carry or dont carry. I had bad service from this guy in the shoes department, he had a really bad attitude to everyone he was "helping" and was rude. He came down during my checkout and the cashier couldnt figure out that the barcode was on the inner part of the box (because I had tried the shoes on) and had called this guy down, and he flipped it out and called whoever did that (an idiot). He was hostile. Totally inappropriate and makes me not want to give my money to Sports Basement anymore. Im not sure what I did to deserve that except give you guys my money? I guess ill just shop online at other places for my stuff.

Its hard to believe that a locally run sports shop can maintain such competitive pricing and outstanding service. 1) Its hard to beat the costs here but they will price match :) 2) Check in for for 10% off through Yelp! Or most gyms (like Planet Granite) offer their members at 10% off discount here. Applies to rentals too! 3) Snow sport rentals here are very reasonable. $25 for a package for 1 day, $35 for up to 5 days, and you can rent for the season for only $150! Pick up and drop off days dont count (free waxing included)!! 4) Staff here are super friendly and will go above and beyond to keep customers happy 5) Lots of events like running groups, yoga, educational meet ups I also love how clean, organized, and huge this new location is! Parking is also remarkably easy here as well. I park in the post office spots after hours.
