This place is a dream! I love coming here when Im doing any DIY project; its way more comprehensive than the smaller hardware stores. They have a great selection of different types of wood that you can have cut to your specification by the staff there (I believe its $1 a cut). The staff is generally knowledgeable and able to help -- if the person you ask doesnt know the answer to your question theyll know who the right person is to ask and grab them for you. The only thing I wish they had more of is home decor items. They have a small selection of rugs, window treatments, and things of that nature, but when Im doing that kind of shopping I want more to choose from so I go online or elsewhere. Its not their specialty so it doesnt bother me too much.

I was on my way to a bike ride, with my carbon road bike that I do not lock. I needed to look at some wood. The cashier did not let me in with the bike. She sent me to another cashier, who called the store manager. The manager said: we do not allow bikes in here. I asked: so you do not care if you have a customer that wants to spend perhaps $500 here? He replies: "I did not say I do not care, I just do not allow bikes in here". I offered to just lean it against the wall, inside this huge warehouse, adding that it will be at my own responsibility if it gets stolen. The manager said "No!" - no flexibility at all. Here is your locally owned San Francisco store: come with your diesel polluter truck here, those are welcome, but no bikes!

If you live in SF, theres no reason ever to tolerate the disorder, poor quality, and worse customer service at Lowes or Home Depot. For small items, find your best local Coles, Fox, or - best of all - Cliffs. For lumber, plumbing, and other more sizable projects, go to Discount Builders. Dont expect immediate personalized service when theyre crowded. But if youre patient or go at off peak times, youll be rewarded with excellent service and great merchandise. Several times Ive gone in with a specific solution in mind, and the staff reworked my entire project to save me money and make my project work better.

I love the selection but the cashiers and management have extremely bad PR skills! Example: I get to the check stand a get got charged twice on four different items. The cashier started arguing with me about it and didnt want to re scan again. Finally she does and didnt even apologize. Then I go to use my ATM card and find out they dont except them, so I tell her Ill go grab cash and be back in 15min. She said she will only hold my things fir 5 min. When I come back after 10min and had to shop for everything again. Also, forget about retiring anything. Good selection, bad PR and no discounts.

As most people agree here, there is pretty much nothing discounted at this store.. As far as the employees go, it is a mixed bag. There are definitely some nice and helpful long term employees there but over the years I have run into some amazingly awful attitudes as well. I think all or any of the bad attributes of this store come mostly from their convenient location. They are the one of the only full size hardware stores located in the heart of San Francisco and they take good advantage of that fact. They pretty much dont have a return policy so be careful when you shop there.

Great hardware store, The hardware and rough-in plumbing, electric and lumber are fantastic - equal or better quality, selection and pricing to Home Depot. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, There is limited selection for finish materials, i.e., you probably want to go elsewhere for fancy lighting, plumbing fixtures or mouldings. Having gotten through the functional stuff, Especially helpful - the parking lot is big enough to almost always have space, without being a quarter mile back to your car.

I used to live close to discount Builders Supply and when my very handy brother came to visit and went there for the first time he was completely dumbfounded. It has everything from plumbing to electrical supplies to tools, paint and lumber -- all at excellent prices that will beat Home Depot in most cases. The vibe is very casual but you can tell many of the workers have been there a long time -- they know everything. Ive also been pleased to see more diversity in their staff recently.

Discount Builders Supply is one of the best hardware stores in the city. It might not have all the bells and whistles that a Home Depot or Lowes has, but it makes up for it with a knowledgeable staff and decent prices. The location is also more central to the city, whereas the other home improvement stores are a bit out of the way, so a great alternative if youre looking for something niche but dont have time to drive around.

I went into Discount Builders today cause I had to build some props for my daughters school play. I was totally overwhelmed and didnt even know where to start. Edgar went above and beyond and walked me through a game plan. He got the right parts and even started building some of what I needed. Made my day and totally eliminated my stress! Thank you Edgar and thank you Discount Builders for taking such good care of me!

I was the only one asked to check my bags after I loaded my cart with spray paint. Go figure. I asked them to check my bags instead before I left since I had more for them to take from such then I could have taken. William the ego trip "manager" refused even at a loss of a pretty significant sale. They cost me $6 on uber and 45 minutes of my life. I was buying the spray paint for a gardening project.

The store has alot of products but they lack in customer service. The way I see it theyre good for contractors but not general public friendly. In the past I been buying from them because my job is only 2 blocks away. Customer Service for the general public is horrible. I will not be coming back again. On a good note a Cole Hardware store just opened in my neighborhood. Arriverla Discount Builders!!

I am a new owner of a 100+ year old home and hit Discount Builders at least every other week. They have everything I need and incredibly knowledgeable staff... much better than at Home Depot. I had a project once that required 8 different things from 8 different departments and someone helped me through all of it. Plus the lumberyard people are super friendly cut items for you.

Its not like I have many other choices this central in the city for a full hardware store, but the workers here seem like they are in big hurry and could probably take a little more time to understand customers needs. They do have about everything though but are much higher priced than your typical big box store. Its still very convenient given their location.

i went to Discount Builders in search of some supplies to build my daughter a play table for her new train set. the staff there was so nice and extremely helpful in talking through the project and finding the right materials. i ended up walking out with a bunch of stuff and the table turned out great. a great local hardware store with amazing service!
