Im in the process of moving and I needed to sell or donate four brand-new bicycles and several hundred dollars worth of bike tools (Ive been involved with cycling, in various ways, for more than 50 years). Since the Bike Exchange has been taking care of cyclists without a lot of money for a long time, I decided to just donate them to this shop. I pulled up outside with the first couple of bikes in the SUV and walked around and into the side door. Entering from the bright sunlight, all I could see was a mass of shadowy, hanging bikes (Im 66, my eyes dont adjust as fast as they used to). I called out, "Hello!" and a friendly, chubby little dog came out to greet me. I asked, loudly enough to be heard, if any humans were in charge. At that point, I heard a gruff "What do you want?" from somewhere behind the mass of bikes. Oriented, somewhat, by the sound of the voice, I saw the outline of a human, at a bench, with his back to me, through the bikes. I called back, "If I can get your attention for a minute, Id like to make a donation." The response from the charming fellow (I assume it was the owner), still without approaching or even turning from his bench, was a sarcastic, "Should I stand at attention? Say yes, Sir and no, Sir?" My answer was that he should go perform an impossible act on himself. Another good cause got the bike donations. I suspect that its too late for this guys mother to teach him manners, and Im surprised that no one else seems to have given him the required lessons. Too bad. Terrible experience. Luckily, this individual didnt speak to me in this manner 20 years ago.

AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE EBOLA. Profane, rude, obnoxious self-claimed owner (presuming not the entrepreneurial and customer-service orientated business creator of the family given the absolute lack of customer service but, simply born into the family business). On Thanksgiving Eve while putting bikes in his shop he felt it fit to yell and assault and threaten a friend smoking around the corner, outside his shop (nowhere near the entrance and at night when it was closed) then began yelling at me, not smoking but speaking with my friend, doing so with his shorter bedraggled transient and indigent bearded friend. The portly self-proclaimed "owner" along with his indigent unkempt servile and sycophantic assistant then began to extol his boss virtuous glories as a golden gloves boxer in a desperate move to intimidate. I found this particularly hilarious given this self-proclaimed "owners" visage and portly corpus had clearly given way to something not unlike the effects of alcohol and a poor and/or excessive diet). The shop itself is clearly not state or federally A.D.A. (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Given the recent settled out-of-court lawsuits of Sacramento/Davis business including but not limited to the: Squeeze Inn, Redrum Burger et. al. one would expect a friendlier reception. If youre looking for a shop with great customer service, an owner who treats prospective buyers and bike repair seekers well...this IS NOT THE PLACE. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE EBOLA!

Straight and to the point. Be forward with Richard and all will be well. He is hard of hearing so be clear and precise. Earlier this week my friends font wheel was stolen. I stopped by other local Davis bike shops and could not find a proper rim replacement. Not only did Richard have the proper 26 by 1.95 rim, it was even a quick release setup for mere $25. A much better deal than any other bike shops. I appreciate Richards help in turning bad karma into a pleasant resolution. If you are looking for a super clean shop, avoid DBE. However if you are looking for a straight forward transaction. This is the bike shop for you. It may not spotless but it is exactly what most need.

Very rude and unprofessional old guys. I went in looking for a wheel for my wifes bike that I am building and all they did was talk smack about the Davis Bike Collective, just because I am a volunteer. I dont know what beef they have with a non-profit bike garage that only has volunteers that try to help other people with their bike troubles. Not only did they talk trash, but they gave me the run around. They answered non of my questions and made me feel unwelcome. No matter who comes into your store, you should always be courteous and helpful. I was going to make a purchase, but I thought wrong.

I love this place, a real family-owned little corner bike shop full of rebuilt old bikes and parts. My favorite of course is the price, $75 to completely overhaul a 30-year-old bike from France that was rusting in my garage, and $14 to replace a flat and clean my chain, tube included. Look around at the other bike shops, you cant beat them. Competent, fast, no-frills, excellent service, what more can you ask for?

I found the perfect bicycle - just the one I was looking for! I shopped around for a road bicycle to commute through Davis. Richard at the Davis Bike Exchange helped me find the right style of bicycle for my size, tastes, and price range. Hes dealt with every type of bicycle around, and knows his stuff. When I need service or advice for my bicycle, I know just the place to go!

Found just the bike I was looking for here. The staff person working at the time was very knowledgeable. He helped me find a bike that fit my size and price range. They have a good selection of used bikes with good prices. They give you a four month gaurentee on the bikes. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Depends on the guy whos working that day, but in my experience these guys get the job done and charge reasonable prices. Ive been coming to the Davis Bike Exchange for 4 years now and think theyre the best bike shop in town!

Very nice guy in the new location down the road. Went well above and beyond to get my sons old clunker running again. I will DEFINITELY be going back here for any future purchase or service. Thanks!

Classic, old-school, no nonsense, conservative with conversation, keep it bikes related, fair and reasonable.
