Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, though sometimes they are too busy to chat because this place does get very busy. And for good reason! Very high quality, well-priced fabrics. Tons of quilting cottons, denims, ducks and canvas, fake furs, silks (satin, dupioni, habotai and many colors of raw silk), linen, rayon, cotton batiste, lawn, dotted Swiss, velvets, and many, many wool suitings. A full schedule of sewing, designing and quilting classes for adults and teens. They carry Vogue, Burda, and New Look patterns along with many independent designers patterns, but dont carry the rest of the Big 4 (Butterick, McCalls, or Simplicity). Vogue patterns are discounted, but are still much cheaper if you wait for them to go on sale at one of the big box stores. An entire wall of high quality buttons and all the findings (zippers, thread, D-rings, trims) that you will need. Finally, dont miss the upstairs! These fabrics are marked down an additional 50% and include many beautiful wool suitings and coat fabrics, as well as some others. A sewers paradise! But do try to go at an off time for easier parking and more attentive service.

Stonemountain is fabulous. And now, A SECRET! If you are in Berkeley you might also try swinging by the Crate and Barrel outlet, on 4th Street a couple of blocks N of University (its a cute little shopping district.) Heres what I discovered last week to my total amazement and delight: go into the back room, where seconds-furniture is being sold, and you will find about 30 bolts of gorgeous Marimekko cottons, some giant prints, some textured solids, all being sold for $3.95 a yard. WOW!! Ive been to this store many times over the years and this is the first time theyve had these bolts (there was always a scrap bin, but only that.) I certainly hope this is a new, permanent feature!

The staff at this shop always greet you upon entering. Are willing to let you try to find what you need yourself before asking if you need assistance. When I actually have a question(like: how do you like this snap fastener and how do the adapters come into play?) I always get more info than I could ever possibly need to make my decision. The knits are not as varied as the wovens and the trims are not extensive, but always of the best quality and more interesting than what you find at other local shops. If you are working on one pretty thing, this is the shop for you.

I would not hesitate to go to Stone Mountain for their wide selection of amazing fabrics, extensive collections of notions and patterns, and the biggest assortment of buttons Ive ever seen. But -- I have had exactly the same experience every time Ive ever been there -- First impression: an amazing store full of great stuff. Second impression: no one to help me find stuff, and some of the staff are actually not very nice to the customers. Conclusion: Wont be back for awhile...but I will be back.

Extremely good selection of 100% cotton fabric. Prints are all the way from food and novelty items, traditional Japanese, to watercolor type batik blues and everything in between. The entire staff is super friendly and very helpful when needed. This fabric store always needs to be here, has its become a staple of the must have stores only found in Berkeley. I LOVE THIS STORE

The most expansive fabric selection Ive found in the East Bay. We just kept pulling more and more beautiful fabrics. A good selection of kids fabrics, animal prints, Asian prints, dots, stripes and plain colors. We didnt have such a great time with the service but just helped ourselves to the fabrics we were interested in. Ive been back twice since my first visit.

Definitely a quilters store, a huge array of quilting fabrics, but run by a bunch or rude old hags. They were condescending and worse not very knowledgeable. I wish i could say the quality of their fabrics was worth giving the place a second chance, but the goods were over priced and mediocre in quality. It would be worth your time to give this place a skip.

Great selection of fabrics with an emphasis on patterned cottons (or is that just me?) and notions (dont miss the button collection). Friendly staff that does not hound you. Well set up so you dont end up standing at an empty cutting table wondering if you should wait or go hunt someone down.

It is really easy to get stuck here for a long time as the selection is fantastic. Parking is easy right out front and there is a nearby BART station (its a few blocks away).
