I love Fabric Depots selection and their Yard Sale area! In spring and summer, its a much larger Outdoor Sale. A few days ago I was in the Outdoor Sale area getting a bunch of trims cut, and my daughter was getting impatient and hard to control, and even though they were somewhat busy, one of the ladies grabbed some chalk and invited my daughter to draw on the pavement with her. Not all places employ people who are patient with special needs kids, and I know its my job to be in charge of my daughter, but I appreciate those places who have employees who are understanding that sometimes it can just plain be harder when a child isnt neurotypical. Now Ive read through a lot of the comments here and want to address a few things, as a sewing professional with a business (Aria Couture--look for it on Facebook). Yes, some of the prices are high. This is what comes with high quality. There ARE a few fabrics you can get for less at JoAnns (pretty much anything synthetic), but there are some at FD that are less, and some you cant get at JoAnns. Ive also got online sources that I prefer for some fabrics and other supplies. Like with anything you want to buy with any regularity, you need to look around and get to know the various inventory and pricing. If saving 50 cents a yard on one of the fabrics in your cart is a big deal, JoAnns is a couple miles away. No one is making you buy anything here. No, the staff doesnt always know all about sewing. If you want to talk to someone whose profession is what works best for which project, or how you should pretreat a fabric or what kind of seam would be best, dont ask a retail salesperson whose job is to know where to find things and to answer basic questions. It is YOUR job to know how to sew with these fabrics. If you dont know what kind of seam to use, or how to wash, reconsider if you should be using that fabric, or hop on the internet and look it up yourself. Retail employees are rarely paid well enough to be experts. Im an expert. You dont want to know how much I get paid. Experts get paid a lot more than $10-$12/hr, but Im sure you wouldnt want to pay a quarter more yet yard of fabric so the store can hire people like me who charge much more an hour. As far as staff attitudes, the closest Ive ever seen to one was when a woman was clearly frazzled after a very busy day and she sighed when I asked a question. I could tell she was exhausted, and as soon as she answered, she had to run of to help someone else. Im not going to fault someone for being to tired and clearly in need of a break. She was doing her best. Otherwise all Ive ever had there are kind people, even with my autistic daughter in tow who doesnt always have the best self-control. Im not saying theyve never employed someone who shouldnt have been hired (pretty much every company has), but if your sole reason for turning against a company after years of great service is one person, thats your loss. More parking for me! I love Fabric Depot, and will return again and again. In fact, Im heading there again today.

One of the worst experiences of my life! DO NOT SUPPORT this place. Ive been a customer here since they opened in the nineties. I have made many large wholesale and retail purchases...I left a small item in my cart, (which the clerk did not check) after a sizable purchase and was accused of shoplifting -subjected to being kept in a small room and intimitated...I was searched for drugs and weapons. I was accused of taking things they do not even carry like make up. I was treated with more contempt than I can express here. Fabric Depot has a very extensive undercover loss prevention system. And yet they carry all kinds of small items. They impose fees on anyone they suspect of improper behavior which actually funds this department. I always wondered why the employees had such an odd, defensive, slightly fearful manner and now I know why. If you choose to shop there, know that you are always on camera. You are not free to engage in a creative process at this store! Anything like bringing in your own projects or folding out a bit of fabric is considered suspect. I was informed “looking around” at something is a sure sign of guilt. I have supported this large store that is also locally owned for so long and its really too bad but you should know they have a nasty nasty view of their customers. The store is plagued by theft and god knows what else...They informed me they have many armed and dangerous people in the store. I was intimidated, threatened, and even after writing letters to the owner and managers never got an apology. If a store has such low regard and distrust of its customers, they deserve to lose them. For my project I ordered the rest of my fabric from New York and got a better deal on it. Mill End furnished me with the rest.

Im really lucky that Fabric Depot is only a short bus ride away from my house. When I was stressing about needing fabrics for a very specific costume Im making, my friend told me about Fabric Depot, a place close to her house that she said was so popular, tour busses for people who are really interested in sewing and making outfits would come to visit. She called it the "Costco of fabric", and once we went there, she wasnt wrong. The fabrics I needed, I was not only able to find the exact material I was looking for, but also the exact hue Id been wanting. This is the case for every sort of fabric that I needed, which was a lot. Before my friend had told me about Fabric Depot, Id been preparing to go to JoAnns fabric - much farther away from my house, less choices, and it can get very expensive. Here, they were having a 20% discount for all fabrics, and I was able to buy 4 types of fabric and buttons, some mulitple yards, for only $30. Im going there again today to pick out some fabric that I missed (they have a 40% discount today! Im excited!), and I am so excited to do so. Now that I know such a wonderful store is located in Portland, Im going to come here a lot more often.

I was initially drawn to Fabric Depot (online) because they had a wide selection of fabrics at very reasonable prices. I was looking specifically for faux mongolian fur to use as backdrops for newborn photography. The first time I ordered from them I had ok service. It was slow to be processed and shipped, but I was very pleased with the product when it arrived. A few months later my credit card information was stolen. Thousands were drained from my savings account. Luckily I was able to recover the money, cancel the card, etc. Come to find out that my information was stolen from Fabric Depot. They eventually sent out a letter of apology. This month I decided to order from them again because I wanted some more fur in a different color. When I placed the order their payment section wasnt working (they said someone would contact me for payment information) and my invoice didnt list the item I was purchasing. It was just blank. Ive contacted them at least three times to try to clear things up and have gotten absolutely no response. I will never order from them again. Very poor customer service. Disappointing, really.
