Im sad because I can no longer shop at or recommend this store. I made my first dress when I was 5 years old (Im now 52) and as long as I can remember I have shopped at The Mill End Store. Last winter I had the opportunity to spend time downtown. We had some brutally cold days last winter and I saw a lot of homeless people with dogs sleeping on sidewalks and in doorways. These dogs did not choose the life they live and it was then I vowed to make a coat for every dog I could find down there (or anywhere within my reach). I make most of them out of discarded clothing and blankets but Im working 2 jobs and dont have the time to go in search for these items. So I contacted The Mill End Store asking for help with my project called Coats of Love. With $50 dollars of fabric at their cost would go a long way. I was told by Jan that they dont do that. She said they sell every piece of fabric and they have none to donate. They began as a wollen mill, I believe, in 1918 selling their wares to several markets. In the early 50s they opened the Mill End Store and now have 2 locations to serve you. It saddens me greatly that for all those years they have benifitted from the community and in these hard economic times where people can barely care for themselves and are having to make some very hard choices regarding their pets, that this fine establishment cant find it in their hearts to lend a hand. Shame on you.

Mill end is addictive. Unlike Fabric Depot, it doesnt cater mostly to quilters, and there is a wider variety of fabric types to choose from; from fine silks and velvets to a wonderful array of find cottons and home deco-fabrics. Its a large store with tremendous selections. It is *the* place to go for many well-known fashion designers and interior decorators (I ran into Leanne Marshal of Project Runway there before Christmas). It is not very easy to find, but a phone-call to the store will get you good directions, and there is a mailing list for coupons and sales that you can sign up for. I think this is hands-down the best fabric store Ive ever gone to. I like it much more than Fabric Depot, and the staff is friendly and helpful. If youre serious about your sewing, you should come to this store. You will get lost in it.

Every trip I make to Portland includes a stop at Mill End. Its the best single-source place in the US that Ive found for outstanding variety in fabric (& notions), high quality, and astounding square footage. There are great deals in the flatfolds/Annex section, and a stunning array of fine wools, linens, silks, and dress goods. The staff is first rate: theres an older woman in the special occasion section who really knows her stuff. Also, I find the ambiance of this store encourages creativity--there isnt a frantic vibe or crush of coupon-holding shoppers like you find a Joann Fabrics. Fabric Depot may have more quilting fabrics, but its Mill End where youll find fabric that has you exclaiming "Oh my God!" every other minute.

I live nearby and have shopped at Mill End frequently over many years. While I have always liked the selection, their customer service is lacking -- cranky, cranky help generally. Yesterday I spent a considerable amount of time choosing fabric, pattern, and notions. When I went to the register the very unfriendly cashier -- and yes, manager -- told me she would not accept my coupon even though yesterdays date was clearly printed at the bottom. The reason was that they were having a sale and thus would not honor it. When did it become optional to honor or not honor a coupon that your business published in a local publication? She told me I could pay the price she quoted me or leave. I left and will not return.

I love this store. However I live 2 hrs away. So I decided to drive over there on Memorial day. Heres the thing: They were closed. I checked google and Mill ends website. I also called to listen to the hours message. All before driving the two hours. BOO Mill End. Tell leave a message or update your site to tell your customers you are closed for a holiday. PLEASE. Ended up getting my fabric at fabric depot instead but I really needed corset bones, So I will have to order online from now on. BOO MILL END! BOO!

Google directions are wrong because it is illegal to turn right on Milport road. Turn right one light before, at the Ochoa street exit, and take the left most street. Drive past the OLCC building and youll see the Mill End building in front of you. Parking is around back. The staff is helpful and cheerful. They have a large selection of unique fabrics at discount prices. Plus, they honor JoAnn coupons (up to a certain percentage), so make sure to ask at the register!

I run a couture costume/bridal sewing business and Mill End is my first stop for all types of fabric! They just have an absolutely wonderful selection. Sometimes when I dont have a specific project in mind I will just wander the fabrics and wait until one jumps out and speaks to me. Voila, new costume inspiration! The employees are always very helpful and the prices are reasonable. Highly recommended.

Tried to buy a $2.62 piece of felt, and didnt meet their *minimum* purchase quota. I said just ring it for their $5.00 minimum. AND THEY WOULDNT! "Oh, the credit card fees are SO much we just cant." Bullshit. Youd have made over 900% on what your credit card fee was for the overage of the sales price. Never shopping there again - theres other places you can get the same material.

Mill end is the fancier option when looking at big fabric stores in Portland (compared to fabric depot) they also have a rug store in the back. They dont have the good coupons some stores have, BUT they will honor most competitors coupons! So there you go. Youll like the wools, linens, and silks if youre into high end sewing. The home deco area if good too.

This place is such an incredible resource. I wish more stores like this existed, but then this one would be less special. A dizzying array of fabrics and all sorts of other random goodies for creative crafty folk. Even if youre not in the market for textiles, if you dig "how the heck does this place exist" kind of stores, make the trip. Its worth it.

Ooooh so many beautiful fabric choices! I spent about a half hour at the Jo-Anns and couldnt find anything I liked. Mill End had so many beautiful, contemporary, fun, luxurious, pretty fabrics to choose from I could barely make up my mind. Staff was very helpful. Yes it was more expensive than Jo-Anns but their selection is worth it.

Im torn on this place. On the one hand, they have a TON of stuff. On the other, its kind of a mess everywhere, the organization isnt clear and there wasnt anyone at the cutting area...felt like it could have a lot of potential if it was managed/organized better, but just felt really underwhelming when we were there.

I purchased my wedding dress liner and tulle here, the staff was very helpful and ordered 25 yrds from their supplier for me. The only thing is they couldnt give me an estimate on the freight charges at all. Not even over or under 100 kind of an estimate. But they always called me back and kept track of my order!
