I like to try to frequent local businesses but I was very disappointed in a recent experience at Martins Hardware. I had recently (within the last week) purchased a 3 inch aluminum vent. As soon as I got home, I realized it was the wrong size and that I needed a 4 inch vent. I could not find my receipt and asked that they simply let me exchange the vent for the right size and I would pay the difference. The staff was very rude and would not even consider allowing the same. Luckily for me I found the receipt later and returned the item. I was very disappointed. Definitely lacking that family business friendliness.

Way over-rated, this store doesnt have typically what I need for reno projects. Customer service is way over-rated too. I just called the store for a simple electrical junction box, and after some guy finally answers the phone with "yeah?", I tell him what I need and he says "what?". So I slowly ask again "do you have any electrical junction boxes?" and he says "no sir". Im sure the IDEA of having a local hardware store nearby is comforting, but Im not into pretending and actually need to get the job done.

Treated like a shoplifter: two staff members stood in the aisle and watched me very carefully; another came up from behind and took up observation from that angle. At checkout, the staff member with the blonde mustache attempted to stare me down. I reckoned Id stare back because who doesnt love a staring contest? I think I won: he eventually looked away... not a friendly reception, although this was hardly the first time Ive shopped there. It may be the last, though!

I made the terrible mistake of buying a kerosene heater there last week, then we decided to go in a different direction for our emergency heat needs. When I tried to return the unused, unopened heater, it turned out there was some tiny sign under the counter glass that I should have read saying that heaters are non-returnable. I complained that I should have been TOLD and was told to keep my voice down. NEVER again!

Every square inch of space is used, and they sometimes only have two of any given item... but holy cow, do they manage to pack an entire home improvement store into that little place! Every staff member knows exactly where every single item is. Its been rare that I havent found what Im looking for. If you live in central or south Charlottesville, this is a great place to shop instead of driving all the way to 29N.

Beyond their many rows of hardware, which you could find anything you need in, they are also a Weber dealer. My family has bought 3 Weber Genesis grills from Martins and we will return to them for all our grill needs in the future. Ask for Chris, his knowledge of the Weber will amaze you.

This is a good store in town that will have all the hardware essentials you might need. They have a gardening section but its not huge. It is a little packed for a small space but you can ask anyone that works there for help and they will happily do so.

I have traded at Martins since I bought my house in 1984. They make the pain of home repair painless. They have superb customer service and can order you almost anything. Mike is the manager and he will make anything right. rich

When I dont want to schlep all the way up 29 north to Lowes, I go to Martin. They usually have what I need. The staff is friendly enough and knowledgeable enough to help me out. For big items or big selection I go elsewhere.

Is $80 a normal price for sharpening a reel mower? We were told $20 when we dropped it off, then charged $80 at pickup. They didnt care that we were told otherwise. Might expect this from a big box store, not a local spot.

Great little hardware shop packed full of all the little things you could ever need for projects. I am amazed by the sheer number of products they manage to fit into this location. Friendly and helpful checkout staff too.

Simply the best hardware store. Isles are packed full and everything is quality, staff is very knowledgeable and accessible. I can find everything I need here and its much closer and more personal than Lowes. Shop Local.

They had the replacement part for my shower control for one half the cost of Lowes, and their customer service was much better. I have been there several times and have always found what I needed.

Super overpriced but a good selection of hardware. Just dont try to pick up any tools, cheap cast wrenches were $10 a piece.
