It is truly a rare occurrence that one is confronted by the lack of professionalism, rudeness, and complete disregard for customer service that is present at the Koons Arlington Toyota Used Car Lot. I showed up one day ready to buy a car from their inventory. I told them that I was committed to buying it 6 hours later, after work. Steve, the manager, always told me that the car might sell at 7:30 that night and that I needed to get someone there in person to start the process before then. I had my father do me a favor and get to the lot by 6:15 (and I told Steve around 3pm that my dad would be there at that time), since I wasnt able to get off from work till about 8. When my dad got there, Steve told him that the car had already sold. Alright, fine, its just business - they have to take the first guaranteed sale. It would have been nice had they waited till 6:15, but that isnt expected. However, what boggles my mind is that when my dad said that his cell phone battery had died and asked Steve to call me, he agreed to. Unfortunately, Steve never called me. The way I found out was when I called Steve to see if my Dad got there (battery had died, remember?). Steve didnt apologize, he didnt say he could help me find another car, no - he said (paraphrasing): I told you when you were here earlier that you should have just bought it. When I want something I take the time from my job to make it happen. Then he repeated some lame story about when he wanted his dog he just left work and drove to Tennessee to get the dog. Well, unfortunately I work in a job where no one would understand if I just up and walked out of work because I wanted a car (or a dog, for that matter). Besides, Steve gave me the impression that if I (or someone related to me) got there well in advance of 7:30, the car was mine. The thing is, there are plenty of other cars out there. In fact, I bought one from another dealership - it was actually a better deal and im very happy with how things turned out. While the lack of civility shown by not making the phone call they promised to make was the worst offense, Steves lecturing of me was a close second - there were multiple other reasons why I would NEVER do business with Koons again. They reeked of a slimy used car sales lot. They were high pressure and played games to try to convince you to buy on the spot, complete with guilt, second guessing, and other things that were rather uncomfortable. I was willing to buy a car from them because it was everything that I was looking for - but looking back, they are not the kind of place I want to have a business relationship with. Trust me, I visited multiple toyota dealerships in the area. Every single one of them was more friendly, comfortable, and accommodating than Koons. I even waited a few days to write this review because I thought, SURELY someone would call me to apologize. No apology, no nothing. Misunderstandings happen, but not apologizing is inexcusable.

Avoid this place. Go somewhere else. Here is why: I took my car to this place, for the first time, for a maintenance/full service. They told me that full service means oil change and tire rotation. I told them that I was there for two reasons: a) A lot of wind noise coming inside the car when driving on a highway, b) I hear the engine noise from inside the car and the car shakes when I am at a traffic light, especially when the AC is on. I was told to leave my car there, go home, and come back in two and a half hours. So I left. 20 minutes later I get a call that my check engine light is on and it will cost $140 just to find out why it went on. I was totally shocked because when I drove my car to the dealership, the check engine light was not on. Two hours later, they called again giving me a long list of "recommended" fixes including polishing the headlights, changing the transmission fluid, replacing light bulbs, new tires, brake adjustment, and etc. Almost $1000-$1500 worth of fixes. I told them that I cannot afford all those fixes right now, but I will just go with the oil change and tire rotation. He immediately told me that they cannot rotate the tires because one the tires wont come off and it costs $140 to fix that. I told them not to do anything and I will come pick up the car. He said that they have already changed the oil. I ended up paying $56 + $21.59 on transportation back and forth, for an oil change that I didnt need. It cost $30 to change oil in Walmart and they do it in 30 minutes or less. I am not upset about that. I am upset because they dont care about the customers need or why you are there. They are rather concerned about how to sell you as many products and services as possible. My car has more issues now than it did when I took it to this place. The check engine light is on, the headlight on the passenger side is not working, one of my brake lights in the back is busted, and I am not even sure if the oil was changed. I just paid my money and left greatly unsatisfied. Unless you have a fat wallet and you are there to purchase an expensive car, they will treat you like dirt. The person who was helping me took me to the parts section to find out how much new tires cost, the guy in charge of parts refused to talk to come and talk to us, pretending he was busy. The three ladies at cash registrar have absolutely no manners. I was treated like a kid.

A quick response, and good online sale quote, to an online inquiry is what landed me in this dealership. I had initially intended on visiting, for a second time, Miller Toyota in Manassas (much closer to where I live). My first visit with Miller Toyota was, in short, insulting. These guys werent willing to haggle with me on my trade in or on the new car. The excuses they threw at me were ridiculous. That was my down payment, after all. I handed them my school transcripts. They have the graduation program that states if you had graduated in the past year you get $1000 off. Fantastic. Theres an added bonus. Hooray for my having graduated in May! Until they pointed out the fine print. Hybrids excluded. Two strikes against Toyota. Maybe I should have read the fine print myself before going to the dealership, shame on me. They are PUSHY. PUSHY. PUSHY at this dealership. For people who arent all that interested in negotiating and selling a vehicle to a potential client they sure are fast and ready to hand you the keys. I was eyeballing the door when they took me back to the finance guy. He was the last chance they had to save my potential business. Thankfully, he wasnt quite as blunt and pushy as the sales guys. He walked me through the numbers, worked with me when I told him what I wanted, and I even got them to throw in a bonus with the car (making up for the fall back on my trade in). What I didnt like was how a third year of maintenance got weaseled in there and I was signing for it before I knew what I was doing. I do know that through our 4.5 hr ordeal they applied several coupons and I did a lot of "NO. Im not paying that. Take it down more." Although, the more they took off it seemed they always found something else to conveniently add in - bringing it back up a dollar or more per month. In the end, I bought the car from them. Am I happy with the car? Oh heavens YES. With the dealership? Meh. Its a dealership. To find a good one is like a needle in a haystack. I dealt with a Mazda dealership a few years back that was absolutely wonderful. Good honest dealerships exist. You just have to find them. If you want that car you might just have to learn to channel your inner bulldog. My inner bulldog certainly came out at this dealership.
