This book store is amazing. Open since December 2004, Nine Lives Books boasts an inventory of approximately 250,000 books covering nearly every subject imaginable, as well as used dvds, cds, records, magazines, cassettes, VHS, and the occasional knick knack. Prices are usually half of original retail on paperbacks, and hardcovers mostly range from $4.98 to $7.98 in the fiction areas. You can also find some great stuff on the dollar carts outside and in the "buck a book" bins in the back of the store next to the magazines. They have wonderful historical fiction, literature, and science fiction sections, and Ive found a lot of great young adult titles I read back in middle school in their young adult section. All of the books are used, which is a wonderful change from Half Price Books usual stock of new remainders. The owner was actually a Half Price employee for nearly two decades before opening Nine Lives, and her store is what HPB used to be... plus the three friendly store cats, Lester, Rita, and Sassy. If youre looking for a kitty of your own, you can also adopt one of the many rescue kitties that live in the adoption center in the back room. I got all four of mine there. I love this store and never leave without finding something. Its my favorite place to hang out. They also give discounts for military, college students, medical, EMT, teachers, and many others. : ) Its not super-organized and squeaky clean like HPB. It looks like a used book store, with stacks of newly-received merchandise on counters and carts. This place is Heaven for book lovers.

I am absolutely amazed by the wide variety of books and magazines that this store carries. The quality of costumer service amazes me as well as their friendliness and willingness to help out young readers, and old readers alike. I love that they take in from the piblic and give it back. Most of the time i would feel bothered by the fact that a store would only give me store credit for items Ive bought in for them... But not here. I am a book lover and i feel like every time i come in this store i just in lost in genre after genre.... Whatever store credit i am given i am just in awe by the amount of books i can walk out with. Prices are amazing, selection is amazing, and i get a very calm relaxing vibe from being in the store... From time to time it can get busy, but that doesnt stop them from making aure customers are having a good experience. I will always go to nine lives before any other used book store... I feel like a dollar spent here is well spent. I also love giving to them because i know my books are in good hands.

I am not sure of what to make of it. I was there when it had cats, and the "Crazy" cat lady. They moved to much smaller digs, and no cats. I was introduced to this place once before and had forgotten about it, I am the Fire Breather that does fiesta season every year. But the second time, the reintroduction was by way of this really odd fellow. Although I had known him since 84, I have always kept my distance. The "Crazy" lady lived up to the reputation, she was nuts. Sad, as less than a year later Rick Perry was pushing e-readers in public schools so we were given a choice of bookstores to meet in San Antonio to make our case for real books. The Half Price books on San Pedro was selected due to some telephone conversations. This bookstore might have been too much at once!

Fell in love with this store the second I walked in. Its beautiful and has a real charm to it, the employees take their time when helping customers. Suzanne was a delight and took her time with my sister and I going over everything we brought in to show her. She looked at everything and gave us a very generous offer. I was tired of dealing with half price books and their lowball offers. Then someone told me about this store. Im overjoyed that I took a chance and came in today. This experience has made my week! Ill definitely be stopping by if Im looking to get rid of some books, or if Im hunting for a rare book. Thanks for taking care of us today! Well be back soon.

BEST PLACE TO TRADE IN COMIC BOOKS . if youre looking to get top dollar for your books/comic books, this is the only place to go. I had around 35 single issue comic books and they offered me $25 cash or $70 credit. The comics were all $1 -$2 comics, nothing special , but Nine Lives took them. Prior to that I tried selling them to Heroes and Fantasies (H&F), and they wouldnt even take the comics. H&F is awesome and probably the best comic store in San Antonio but i wouldnt sell my comics there, as confusing as that sounds. Anyway, Nine Lives has a very friendly staff that shares a love for books/comics books with their customers

I cannot recommend this store enough! Every time I come in, I receive friendly and welcoming service from the staff. Everyone is polite and loves to talk books with you. It is like a treasure hunt every time we go here since their selection is always changing. I have found some very rare and hard to find books that the chains never have in stock. They are honest people really love what they do and go out of their way to make it a positive experience for you. They are one of the last independent bookstores anywhere in the area and I always try to support the whenever I can.

5 star service. This bookstore truly went above and beyond for me. I purchased a book there. Later I realized that I had lost my wallet, called the store, but the person I talked to was unaware that someone turned it in. The amazing part is that an employee called my mother in Pennsylvania to tell her they had my wallet. I dont know how they located her, but am grateful and they deserve to be noted. I got it back with EVERYTHING still inside. Definitely never expected that kind of effort to help a stranger from a bookstore.

Its hard to complain about a used book store. They get their books from what people bring in, right? So how can you fault for selection? Kids books are a little pricey, but I have to say I got the best deal of my life on a set there. But that was only 1 time. Maybe you can find something better. Their used LP section is pretty good.

Gross- Just gross. Im a cat person and even I could not handle the smell and feline filth in there! As mentioned previously, their kids books are a bit pricey compared to half priced books. There were also several books that were "dirty"- as in hairballs and such... My reccomendation is stay AWAY! Eeeew.
