NEVER buy meat from the back of a truck, particularly if its a pickup truck with a chest type deep freeze in the bed, this should tell you something right away. If the company can not afford proper refrigerated trucks, they are unlikely to be anybody you want to deal with. I am a journeyman butcher, with over 30 years experience in the meat business. At one point in my life, I was unemployed and found myself working for one of these companies, (briefly), it only took about a week to figure out that it was a complete and total RIP-OFF. I will explain how this works. The "drivers" are independent agents, they "buy" the meat on consignment from the company. They leave the office each morning with a load of meat and go wherever they think they can sell it. There are no "routes", and seldom to they ever have "deliveries" that they made or missed. The "missed delivery" is a favorite sales pitch, it most likely never happened. No one re orders the meat, it sucks. The drivers return to the office, usually at night, after they have sold what they can. They return the meat they did not sell, and pay for the meat that they did. They pay a daily charge for the truck, and keep any profit they have made. They will use a variety of sales pitches, most of which are outright lies, and are very persistent. As for the meat, most of these companies are selling meat that was processed from dairy cows, look at the label, if it is from New Mexico, it is most likely from dairy cows. The "odd taste" that many people complain about is from a tenderizer they use called Bromelain, it is an industrial strength tenderizer that will turn the meat to mush when thawed. Buy your meat at the grocery store, contrary to what these guys tell you, all of the major stores guarantee their meat unconditionally, and WILL refund your money, give store credit, or replace the product, generally at the customers behest. Just buy USDA Choice meat and you will have much higher quality meat than will ever come out of the back of a pick up truck. The meat at the store will almost certainly be a better deal financially too, just look at the weight of the box of meat they try to sell you door to door, and divide the price by the weight, this will give you the price per pound, which will ALWAYS be better from a major grocery store. Let the buyer beware.

I am not shocked by the previous reviews and feel sorry for those who have been short-changed. However, my experience with the black salesman that came to my door actually talked to my husband. I stood in the background while the man explained that in his truck he had angus beef and sells (all the time) to three of our neighbors. My husband ask me if I was interested. I said no. Can you believe that the man asked my husband if he thought that Jesus intended to make women decision makers? OMG!!!!! Since the year 1920 women have been legally able to make thier own decisions. Women, along with blacks, were given the right to vote by the 15th amendment of the US Constitution. AND, Jesus didnt intend a man to rule women or blacks. I think he meant to say God (or maybe he just doesnt know the difference) Coverture is a practice that has long been fazed out over the years. Women can now make contracts, hold jobs, retain their own earnings, and have equal say within their marriage. I am very offended by a black man who no longer lives under the restrictions of Jim Crow Laws, but insists that women should live under the thumb of "Her Man". Since I am free to pay the bills as I see fit without the help of my husband (who, by the way, feels I am completely up to the tasks) I believe I have the right to refuse buying meat out of the back of a truck. More Shocking- I believe his wife was riding in the truck with him, my advice to her: RUN!!!!!! So the lesson to all women is: NEVER BUY MEAT FROM A MAN WHO IS LESS EDUCATED THAN YOU ARE!!!!!!

I had two guys come up to my door REEKING of cigarette smoke. It seems as if the older guy was training the younger guy. The older man did his pitch and I politely declined. He continued on trying to sell me with phrases like "just pull the trigger" and "just do it" and "Ive got to get rid of these today", which was frustrating because I had my three little ones at the door with me, trying to corral them back inside, and still he kept on. After still being polite and declining he said "Fine, gotta go, good-bye!" As he and his trainee walked away I could hear the older man "coaching" the younger one and saying rude things about specific groups of people that, in his opinion, wouldnt buy their meat. He said "I dont need mothers with kids running around or old ladies!" Im all about a teaching moment and I get that they are sales people doing their job, but they could have at least waited until in the car to say rude and careless things about possible customers. I did not purchase meat that day and, based on their "professionalism" or lack of, I will never buy from this company. If those two men, smelling of cigarette smoke so strongly it gave me a headache, dressed in cargo shorts and tennis shoes, and completely disrespectful of a polite decline to their product, is what they intend to portray their company as then you can count me out!

Today I was heading out in a hurry to make it to my night class and a black truck approached me. I guess the salesman thought I would give him the time of day to make his sale but I climbed in my truck and he said, come on man youre not gonna give me 2 minutes! I told him I was in a hurry and had class. He then sat in his truck and waited for me to leave. I figured he would make his rounds around the neighborhood and noticed he moved his truck right in front of my driveway. well I get back home and noticed my driveway had some chalk drawing, only it didnt look like it was done by grade school kids. This drawing happened to be a penis. yes, a penis... I went over to one of my neighbors and asked if he was approached by them and what type of attitude they had towards him. I let him know what happened in my situation and he thinks it was them that drew the penis on my driveway. The fact that I saw them move their truck in front of my driveway to shield them from the house in front of mine makes perfect sense. I hope I dont see these guys around in the future. and the guys face looked like a jackass so Im sure Ill recognize him next time.

I just purchased from these guys this afternoon. They gave me the story about how someone had had a credit card declined in our neighborhood and needed to sell the meat at cost. Just going off of the price (around $150) I will say that, if I purchased the same meat from Market Street or somewhere like that, it would have probably topped $200 pretty easily. Ive been grilling since I was 14 years old, so I will run some "experiments" on the steaks and chicken and then re-evaluate. Really hoping I didnt get hosed. I know the guys are salesmen and trying to earn a living, but thats a chunk, for our family. Reading some of these reviews doesnt give me much hope, right off the bat. Update (1.19.2012) - Decided to grill a couple of the ribeyes, first. They may not be as thick as what we get at Market Street or Local Yokel, but, after proper preparation and the vital one-two hour "sitting time" (out of the fridge at room temperature), these things were great! Pregnant wife gave two (or four?) thumbs way up. Marbling was pretty good, though a bit high fat content in one steak. Overall, scale of 1-10, Im giving them an 8.
