Ten Thousand Villages is one of my favorite little shops on Walnut Street. I work in Midtown Village, so I tend to stop in the shops often...I like to pick up a quick lunch at Maccabeam, then hit Ten Thousand Villages and Kitchenette on my way back to work. Ten Thousand Villages sells handcrafted goods by artisans in developing countries - but (unlike most other stores like this) they make sure that all of their products are sourced from artists and craftsman that are actually paid a fair wage. That means the prices are a little bit higher, but I can also feel a bit better about what I buy. They have really unique things and the price range is better than you might expect. I have gorgeous handwoven pillows that were pretty pricey, but the last thing I bought was a little hand-carved monkey figurine for, like, 4 bucks. I think this is a chain, but they have that small, locally-owned vibe and its a company I feel good about supporting.

Mixed Feelings - I love this place and what they stand for, but I can do without their employees walking behind you from the moment you enter the store to make sure you dont steal anything. I dont generally go on websites to rate, but I feel compelled because they make me so uncomfortable and I have begun to avoid the store entirely :-( Its really insulting.
