Mechanically - adequate. Customer handling - poor with a bait/switch will keep me from coming back. My gear crank had snapped while cycling, and BB was the closest shop. They didnt have the right crank in stock, and did not appear to have access to a similar color crank from their vendor. But I was quoted $15 for a compatible (but silver instead of black) crank, $5 labor, and a 2-day turnaround. I felt this was acceptable on balance, so I left. Late afternoon two days later, I had not received a call/text. I called the shop to inquire about the bike. I was told the bike would not be ready for another week, when I asked about the 2-day turnaround I was left on hold for 15 minutes. I hung up at that point. After spending some time calling around to find another shop who could do the repair, someone else from BB called back and said the bike had been ready. Upon arriving to pick up the bike, I spent 10 minutes watching the cashier (late 20s male, dyed blonde hair as I recall) fiddle with a odometor unattached to a bike, and keep saying out loud "I dont know how these things work. The way he was interacting with a nearby bike suggested he was not one of the mechanics. Meanwhile, myself and 2 other customers stacked up waiting to be addressed. Finally, when he looked are way again I asked about picking up my bike. He wheeled it out and rang it up. The $15 part was upped to $25, and I said I was specifically quoted 15 because 2 days prior I thought I heard 50 and asked for them to clarify the price. The cashier said "oh, well this is the price". I said I wouldnt have waited two days and accepted a non-color-matching part for a higher-than-expected crank price. The cashier said "Im sorry", literally shrugged, and glanced down at my hand with my wallet. My evening plans were timely enough and depended on my biking away that I couldnt stay behind to argue for the $10. I paid and said "if this isnt corrected, I wont be able to return." The cashier shrugged, and a mechanic glanced up and went back to work.

I miss the staff that worked their 8 years ago. Bought my bike there. Had a great relationship with the staff. Fast forward 8 years to today: Called ahead because I live far away, wanted to make sure they still honored free tune ups for bikes bought there. Told them everything that needed fixed on my bike, they said they have all the parts I need and as long as I came early on a weekday they could get it in and out in a few hours (one trip). Drove all the way there for them to make fun of the condition/age of my bike, tell me they COULDNT give me the free tuneup and just charge for anything extra that needed done, and were pricing everything higher (parts and labor) than the guy did over the phone. Not only that, but they told me they couldnt have it done for 10 DAYS! They wasted 4 hours of my day off (to get there and back) and a good chunk of change in gas and parking. And they were rude about it. Most of the staff was hanging out in a group talking instead of working on the bikes. But apparently, they are the only people in the world who know how to "properly fix/tune a bike". Rude, cocky young people. I really miss the old staff. Will never go back. Kopps Cycles in Princeton, NJ did a GREAT job helping me and they were SUPER nice.

I was walking around Center City and couldnt believe how wonderful the weather was for a bike ride. Then I remembered I had a bike back in my apartment with deflated tires. I popped open Google Maps, and Breakaway Bikes was one of the few shops still opened so I dropped by to find myself a pump. The choice was easy - a $35 or a $45 pump. I chose the former, and even that was a bit pricey for a pump. I checked online later and it was the same price on Amazon (although Amazon had other cheaper ones available). I also looked around for a decent helmet - the cheapest one was $35 with the other ones as high as +$180. I take down one star because theres not enough variety here - at least in terms of price points. There were only two pumps, which is fine since its just a pump. However, there was only one $35 helmet, with the other ones way too expensive for a recreational bicyclist such as myself. Oh yeah, the pump worked as advertised. Easy peasy. Still in search of a helmet though...

Im a high time rider who travels and rents literally all over the world. I call first to see what kind of bikes are available and what theyll support. I usually bring my own pedals and shoes, etc. The Felt Verza 50 bike was great! Perfect for the Schuylkill Trail, Wissahickan and around town. They were quick to offer to put the pedals on and adjust the fit. But a couple things were weird- one, the bike didnt have a water bottle cage. I asked and they said they didnt do that. (I didnt ask about a flat kit. Usually available at most the places I rent.) And lastly, I walked there and brought my shoes and stuff in a small bag. I asked to leave the things I changed out of behind the counter, and she had a bit of a hissy about it. If people bring their own stuff, what are they supposed to do with their street clothes? Ill rent again. Its a terrific area. But I dont get the feeling renting is their forte.

I dont usually give places 5 stars in reviews, but this shop deserves it. Every time I have gone in here I have been greeted and had very knowledgable staff help me figure out what I need. Their accessories section blows just about any other shop out of the water, and prices seem just as good as anywhere online. They have everything from $10k mountain bikes to triathlon racing bikes to $300 cruisers. They rent bikes. Theyre willing to work with you and order just about anything. I got a performance fit from Richie, who took about 3 hours after the shop closed to finish our appointment and get my bike so dialed that I can now ride it literally all day. In a day and age where the LBS gets squashed by online sales, these guys stand out. Never had a bad experience, never felt unwelcome. Bravo guys, youre now my go-to shop. Ride in and check them out.

I highly recommend this shop. Awesome experience and all by chance. I forgot to switch over my cleats from my tri shoes to my road shoes and I was 1.5 hours from home. I started calling shops from my phone at 7:00 PM on a Saturday night from my hotel room. I had race the next day at 7:00 AM. They happened to answer the phone and stayed open for me well after hours. One of if not the best / coolest shops & people working in a shop I have ever experienced (I travel a lot and just love to visit bike shops all over the country). What was even better was their great customer service and enthusiasm to help me solve my problem. Which they did. This place is the real deal if you love bicycles / bicycle culture and great customer service.
