I have always liked Franklin Hardware, and thought that they took decent care of their animals, but today I stopped in and saw that they still have the same lonely ferret as when I stopped in last month. Feeling bad for it, I asked if I could hold it (it turned out to be a her). Upon opening the door of the WAY too small cage, the ferret immediately started acting crazy and trying to bite the employee, who clearly had NO IDEA how to pick up or interact with a ferret. I offered to pick her up, and it was immediately apparent that no one has been allowing that animal to have adequate exercise or human interaction. She is morbidly obese (which is quite difficult to manage with a ferret), has absolutely no muscle tone, and is not AT ALL nip-trained. She is being kept entirely isolated, with no toys, in a tiny wooden box with inadequate ventilation (full of wood shavings- which are well known to damage the respiratory tract of ferrets), with no litter box or potty training. When I suggested that the ferret at least be allowed to spend some time in a much larger (ie- appropriately sized for a ferret) *empty* kitten enclosure the employee just stared at me as if I was suggesting something absurd, and made it clear that that was not going to happen. So shes basically spent all day every day in a tiny 2 square box since May, which is about 3.5 YEARS in ferret-years, during her most critical developmental time. I gently tried suggesting that no one will want to buy a ferret that acts crazy, and the only response was to ask if I wanted to speak to a manager. So I just held and walked around with the ferret letting her smell things for about ten minutes, and then reluctantly had to return her to her cage because I knew she probably had to go to the bathroom and I had to be somewhere. NO PART OF THIS WAS ACCEPTABLE. If you are going to sell animals then you have a moral obligation to care for the animal as well as a fiduciary obligation to customers to sell them an animal that is healthy- physically and mentally. Animals that are not healthy or not taught how to behave are far more likely to be abused, suffer without vet treatment, and to be abandoned. They are also a lot less likely to SELL in the first place, so this just baffles me. Its a shame, because I want to support independent businesses like this, but this is just inexcusable. I gave more than one star only because the cage was relatively "clean" (as far as inappropriate guinea pig cages go) and because this is the only store in the area that sells higher-end Evo ferret food. But to any ferret-lovers who are stopping in to buy supplies, or even just driving by, PLEASE GO IN AND ASK TO HOLD THAT POOR FERRET so she gets a few minutes of cognitive stimulation, decent human interaction, and fresh air out of that terrible cage!

I prefer to shop and support local businesses whenever possible. I like this particular store because they have a great selection, well stocked, and kind employees. They also adopt homeless kittens and cats, which is awesome. Parking lot is easy to access, plenty of room. This business is a great part of our community. It seems to do good business, so others certainly recognize its value. Prices are reasonable. Pet supplies are generally cheaper than Petsmart and Petco. Hardware is comparable or lower than Lowes. Great for pond supplies and lawn and garden supplies, too. We bought some lawn tools here that were great prices and high quality.

One of the best places around for pet supplies...no matter what kind of pet you own! Their selection is pretty dang big, their prices are normally cheaper than chain stores and the often have pretty good sales. Theyre normally staffed pretty heavily so getting help with something isnt hard. One of the cheapest places around for high-end pet foods if you prefer to feed your dog something other than grocery store garbage. And its nice to be able to buy just about anything you need for you house, garden, pets or farm all at once place. We go here quite often.

Have shopped there many times and highly recommend for many reasons: great customer service, knowledgable, well stocked, good prices. The pet store is extraordinary with many quality products for cats, dogs, fish, reptiles, etc. Linsey, the pet section manager possesses a wealth of knowledge and will discuss ones concerns with great patience.

Extremely unprofessional staff! I had to pry one employee away from their cell phone to ask a question; they had no idea what I was talking about. They basically pawned me off onto somebody else that was just as clueless. The are way overpriced and if I could give them less than one star I would! They are a disgrace.

Ive heard some pretty convincing debate that suggests this pet store and many others in the area claim the exotic pets are raised in captivity. However, there is strong evidence suggesting this isnt the case and natural ecosystems are being destroyed to collect these pets.

Locally owned and products are high quality at good prices. Staff is always helpful. When you buy here most of their products are made in the USA. If its price you want go somewhere else and blame yourself when your job disappears.

Franklin pet center is the best pet store in Chambersburg to get feeder crickets, worms, mice and rats. Cheaper than other places and of great quality. Always friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff.
