I have been a loyal customer of the Book Bin for over twenty years, but no longer. The Book Bin has a fine selection of books, although a bit pricey. However, if you support independent booksellers, its worth it. But, the Book Bins customer service is a problem. I bought a book as a gift last week, and was assured that I could return it. I specifically clarified with the clerk the return was a refund, and not store credit. Yes, absolutely, she was very clear. Today I tried to return the book, and was told store-credit only. The clerks had no interest in what I was told, and were thrilled to point out to me the policy is printed on the receipt. Of course, you only see the receipt after youve made a purchase. Which is why youd ask the store clerk in advance, and expect an honest, accurate answer. Its ok to have a store-credit only return policy, and its also okay for a clerk to make a mistake. But its not okay to not stand behind what a clerk has told a customer. Such a small amount, too. This is classic case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. On principle alone, I will never spend another dime in the Book Bin-theyve lost a big-spending customer because they would not stand behind what their clerk told me was their return policy. It wont kill me to shop Amazon, although not my preference. Perhaps this is an example of why independent booksellers cant stay in business. The clerks would rather be right than smart.

Whats not to like about an owner who verbally abuses his staff in front of customers, pays 90% of his staff minimum wage despite length of employment, routinely pays women less than men for the same position, hides extra inventory in shell companies to avoid taxes, and has his handyman cover up asbestos in the basement with fake walls? Everything.

I love the Book Bin because of the employees. They are welcoming and helpful. Ive called on two separate occasions looking for specific books. Each time I was greeted politely and was delighted to find the books I sought. (One of those occasions was on Christmas Eve, looking for How the Grinch Stole Christmas)

Went to trade in some school books so that I can get some extra money. So I went here thinking I would get a good price I was wrong. Gave them 6 books and received 9 dollars. My roommate gave them 3 books and one was a textbook and he received 13. DO NOT GO HERE TO TRADE IN BOOKS.

The prices have gone way up and the selection has gone way down. The staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. The rare book section is apparently never open. Ive visited there about a dozen times over the last month on different weekdays and at random times, and its always closed.

With limited book store options in Salem, Book Bin does alright with a selection of new books, magazines and used books. I popped in the other day and Im glad to see there is a local store I can buy cookbooks from since Borders closed and Powells is a bit of a trek.

A little bit of an old book smell when you walk in here, but a nice collection of new and used books. I enjoyed browsing the manga section and posing next to a giant pair of googly eyes. Lots to be look though, and also has plenty of book-friendly gifts.

My favorite bookshop in Salem. Its easiest to get to by walking a few blocks. Its mostly all street parking in this area. Great selection and helpful, friendly staff. Its a bit crowded and hard to navigate. Bookstore typical I should say.

Love it. Wide selection of used books, friendly staff (not sure why anyone thinks theyre rude), theyre eager to order anything they dont have, lots of calendars/stationary, good kids books, a Salem staple that I hope never closes!

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff makes it a pleasure to shop here. If they ever dont have the exact title Im looking for they are happy to track it down, which is a rarity due to the amazing selection.

The girls who work the counter are consistently cold, and the book selection is mediocre and a little over priced. I always expect a decent shopping experience when I go in but always feel pretty unsatisfied.

I have been buying books at the Book Bin down town store for many years. I have been very happy with the prices and service. I am pleased to see the new outlet in E. Salem. Welcome to my side of town!

This is a great bookstore; it has the quality and curation of a new bookstore with used book prices. Its a great place to find new books, to talk to book experts, and to revisit classics.
