I went into this bookstore with my daughter today searching for The God Delusion (read it!) And I asked who I can only assume was the owner but she didnt have it. The section she led me to was near the Poetry section. I picked up a clearly very used book and opened it. It was $18. It had writing on the pages and all that. I asked why it was so expensive and she said that its a hardback and "he" looks them up on the internet. I like to patronize local businesses but I think their books are wayyyy overpriced. Only about half the books are in decent condition. I think I made her mad with my comment because from there our interaction was frosty. Unwelcoming. Someone else that reviewed said something about her not being the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Hmmmm, if youre selling clearly used books with childrens markers and writing on pages I am sorry but you dont get to charge full price as if it were in mint condition. If your business is struggling so you compensate by overcharging then dont be surprised when people dont come back. As well, it looks like a thrift store on the inside, which is fine but that would be why people are saying its Goodwill-esque. I wont be going back to that place. Especially now with reading the business owners encounter with the LGBTQ couple. Nope. ✌

We were visiting Newport and looking for a bookstore and wandered into Fireside Book Store with our 1 yr old and 4 yr old kids. The store is very well stocked with tons of titles and genres but they are terribly overpriced for being used books. The owner was definitely not a people person and watched us like a hawk as if we were about to destroy the books or something. She doesnt make you feel relaxed or in the mood to buy any books. The minute we walked in the door, we could tell she wasnt terribly fond of children, so if you plan on coming with your children, dont. She will hover like a vulture and stalk you to watch their every move, even though our children were well behaved and supervised. Even though we found several books we would have purchased, the prices and the demeanor of the shop owner resulted in us buying only 3 books. I can guarantee that was only because were diehard bookworms. I certainly would not recommend this store to my family and friends. .....or anyone actually.....Youve been warned!

I am disappointed in seeing negative reviews about this bookstore and owner. I have known the owner for many years and I have never been offended or put out by her demeanor. Overpriced books?? Really? She is not Goodwill, Salvation Army, or a Thrift Store She is a small business owner who loves books and is definitely not in it for the money thats for darn sure. .She is a no nonsense type of person and is friendly to those who are friendly to her. She can come across tough but she is a kind caring person with utmost regard for her customers. She has a wonderful selection of books of all kinds so if your a true book lover, check it out. Your buying books, not witty bantor with the owner so please remember that.

My partner and I were excited to be visiting local used bookstores in the area, when we came across Fireside. After parking right outside of the store, she and I shared a hug before entering. It was quite obvious that the owner was put off by our queerness, and did not want us there in her store. The entire 30 seconds we stayed were extremely uncomfortable and hostile. My partner left visibly upset and shaken, and the owner said,"did I make her upset?" I let her know that the general vibe and attitude as we walked into the store was enough for us to not feel welcome. We went on to find several other lovely used book places, and happily spent our gay money in those establishments.

The owner is just not good. I wouldnt buy any books just because of her personality. I was acting like a gentleman towards her, while she went on and on telling me how Retarded people are in general. Please dont go in there! You will regret ever stepping foot into her building. She will try to manipulate every situation and will try to make you feel like the lowest of low. Dont, just avoid this place all together, its not worth any business! Earlier reviews about her are true. If anyone had a positive experience do please comment and let me know, because I dont believe thats possible.
