Thats right, the universe. As an avid traveler and master of both space and time, I have had occasion to traverse the cosmos in search of a casual, comfortable atmosphere to discuss all things beer-related with beer experts while enjoying some of the best beer known to man. Im elated to say that my quest has reached an end: 16 Tons is the venue, Mike and Jeff are the experts, and for my money, Ola Dubh from Harviestoun Brewery is the beer. There is a tremendous selection of suds at 16 Tons, ranging from old favorites to the delightfully uncommon, and with a daily tasting it is often not necessary to commit to a full 750 mL bottle to see if you like something new (secretly, I fear commitment). The prices are usually right on par with what you can expect to see for the same beer at Safeway, which is amazing considering the difference in inventory. Mike and Jeff have also put together a nice wine collection, focusing on getting the most bang for your buck. (Im not cheap, I just love a bargain. Okay Im cheap). The sake selection is impressive in both its diversity and ability to accelerate intoxication (Im also at times impatient). Viva 16 Tons!

My #1 place to go for a beer in Eugene. I prefer it to the Bier Stein because its not as consistently packed with people, although on the weekend evenings the two crowds can be comparable. The earlier reviewer is right: its not a traditional bar atmosphere, better suited instead to social drinking and conversation. They dont serve food, but they encourage you to bring in outside food to go with any one of their 18 beers on draught. You can also pay an extra $1 for corkage and buy a bottle of wine (or one of their small selection of refrigerated beer bottles, or one of their large selection of unrefrigerated beer bottles if you really want) and drink it on site. Im always another day older--or my liver is a couple days older--and deeper in debt when I leave.

16 Tons Tap House is by far one of my favorite tap houses in Oregon. Its the little place you almost dont want to become too popular, but want the world of success for the owners. The staff are always insanely friendly and helpful in choosing or suggesting beer selections from their 18 taps!! Its Small, cozy, quiet enough to talk comfortably and enjoy some conversation and great beer. Theres an even more insane selection of domestic and imported craft/micro bottled brews along the wall and a small refrigerated cooler for some chilled takeaways. Its certainly worth a stop-in if the above appeals to you - im sure youll find a new favorite.

Mike & Jeff (owners) @ 16 tons are the most cool, humble beer business owners youll meet, & their power-staff of servers are funny, friendly, & knowledgeable as hell - the better to recommend you to the best beer for your tastes. The atmosphere is relaxed & comfy. Theres usu tasteful, unique music playing non-invasively, w/ a nice semi-low lighting - just enough to read the legendary tap lists or nerd out on the Lovibond of your pint. Plenty of experience at your disposal, w/o the pretentiousness or snobbery. Maybe not as many bottles as the Stein, but the ones they do have in stock are always more eclectic.

just went by today for the first time after my wife told me she had seen it. its really quite great, lots of beers i havent seen before by well known breweries, many different vintages of some great beers, and they do tasting 6 days a week. as soon as i went in i was greeted by one of the owners and he nonchalantly steered me in the direction of beers i should be interested in, which is helpful, when all you have to go by is the labels on the bottle. they have wine, too, but who cares.

The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They will go out of their way to help you find the something special just made for your mood that day. The prices are great and with the beer club discount the prices are often the best in town, and the annual membership fee is very reasonable. I feel like the staff truly wants me to get to know more about various beers and challenges me to get out of my comfort zone on occasion, and I am fine with that. They have been right every time.

I used to go to 16 Tons all the time, before Tap & Growler opened and Bier Stein moved into their new location. Lately its seemed lacking. Sure, the staff is great, and its generally quiet and mellow, but the taplist tends towards strange and extreme beers, and taplines and kegs arent well-maintained. Already-tapped kegs are often cycled between locations. Also, the only sink is in the bathroom, meaning glasses are washed elsewhere, which is kinda weird.

Arguably the best place in Eugene for craft beer. Knowledgable staff, a constantly rotating tap selection, tons of bottles to choose from off the shelf or in the cooler, as well as bottles of wine. The atmosphere is cozy and never gets too loud. Great place. I love it here.
