Our experience at the Gem Lab was extremely positive and I couldnt be happier to have found my engagement ring here. My boyfriend wanted me to pick out my engagement ring (thanks honey!) while were currently living in different states. I had shopped around Rochester at other jewelers while also looking at Gem Lab. Compared to Cornells and Manns, the Gem Lab was BY FAR the friendliest, easiest to work with and most professional. I was treated very rudely at Cornells (not greeted for a long time, spoken down to, made to feel like my healthy budget was still nothing) and was basically ignored at Manns (they spent less than 5 minutes with me and never returned emails). At Gem Lab we dealt with Kate Kaplan, who was always polite and took her time to answer all of my questions thoroughly, even explaining above and beyond my questioning. You can tell she loves her work and helping people find what they will cherish forever. Her level of communication was refreshing and truly appreciated. She was always quick to respond to emails and calls and made it easy for my boyfriend to get payment and shipping handled. We even received a military discount. Everything was transparent and several options were entertained without the pressure to make decisions. Never did we feel like we were being rushed or misled or getting ripped off. The pricing is very fair and the rings arrived beautifully packaged! I cant wait to wear them forever, theyre so beautiful!! If finding a conflict-free diamond is important to you, they do have lab grown diamonds that are equally as amazing as mined diamonds and they can order either kind for you if they dont have what youre looking for already in store. Ive been so pleased with my experience there that I also brought in vintage pearl earrings I plan to wear on my wedding day to be reset. Turn around time was a quick 3 days. My boyfriend and I are very thankful for our great experience dealing with Gem Lab! Definitely pay them a visit! You will be well respected as a customer. I can say from experience, this place makes dreams come to reality! I recently worked with Paul and The Gem Lab team to design and create a custom engagement ring for my (now) fiance. My experience with the Gem Lab was rather unique in that I am originally from Rochester, but am currently residing in Chicago, and thus had to work with their team remotely via email, phone, text, Facetime, etc.... but man was I impressed. The Gem Lab staff was incredibly attentive, responsive, organized, and thoughtful and made my experience as amazing as I could ever imagine. Despite not being local, I was able to be involved throughout all parts of the process (CAD design, modifications, changes, finishing etc..) and was thrilled with the service I received from Paul. In an era when many jewelers have gone on-line and customer service has fallen by the way-side, The Gem Lab stands out like a brilliant diamond. If you want Grade A customer service (and perfect jewelry to match), you MUST check out The Gem Lab. Now onto the jewelry itself... When I dreamed of the engagement ring I wanted to present to my fiance, I never thought it would be as beautiful of the one The Gem Lab produced for me. The team helped produce CAD drawings so that I could see a model of what the ring would look like prior to production, and assisted me in making modifications as necessary. They provided me with professional photographs and videos of the ring so that I would have them forever. Pauls expertise in gemology and jewelry design was unparalleled and he provided tons of excellent advice to ensure my ring was everything I had hoped it to be. The finished product was beyond my wildest imagination and I can confidently say I would never go anywhere else (or recommend anywhere else) in Rochester to get my jewelry, or to design any new pieces I might desire. If I could give them 6-stars, I would. Thank you for everything!

I am so disappointed. I called looking to find out the status of my rings I had dropped off to have the prongs replaced. At first they said they had only one done then they said " oops, I found it. It has been done for a little while now. I am sorry, they should have called you already." Accidents happen; I get it. They charged me for a ring they put on hold for me and it took 15 minutes to try to get it off my slip. While I was waiting for the slip to be figured out I asked to see my ring under the microscope to verify my ring. They showed me a ring that looked like it had a ton of imperfections in it. They guy said it was just dirt I was seeing. I asked why would you give me a dirty ring back; dont you typically clean a ring before giving it to your customer? I proceeded to look at the ring where I saw a chip in the diamond. I asked about it also mentioning that no one has ever told me I had a chip in it. He said it must have been under my prong where it wasnt noticeable. Clearly it is their word against mine, but I am an honest (a little nervous) person who just wanted to make sure I was given back the correct ring. (Which happens to be my grandmothers ring- VERY sentimental) I went to Joe back when he was in the Sibley building downtown. I trusted him. The dent very well may have been there when I brought it in. But it also very well have happened there. Maybe they should start showing the ring and its flaws when we drop it off, sign off on its condition, so when we pick it up there are no questions. I know I have learned a lot from this experience..a little too late.

My husband & I have been customers with The Gem Lab for 18 years. I had my engagement ring & wedding bands made at the The Gem Lab as well. We had to move to North Carolina & have been livng here for 12 yrs. Every chance I get to go back to Rochester for a visit, I make a special trip to The Gem Lab & they take care of me & my husband EVERYTIME! I just recently visited them in Oct. 2010 and needed a new necklace & medical alert vial for my husband to wear around his neck at all times. I asked a jewelry store in NC if they could make the medical vial look better & they said no. I then talked to Joe at The Gem Lab to see if he could (which I knew he would) &, to my surprise, he made the medical vial look out of this world with a custom silver fitting over the old tarnished vial bought at a drug store. "It looks absolutely AWESOME!!" I showed my husband & he loved it as well. I knew it was worth the wait til I was able to come to Rochester to have this professionally done. After getting back to NC, I received the necklace & vial within about a week immediately. The Gem Lab NEVER fails us! I just want to reiterate what a GREAT & FANTASTIC job you all really do for us! Patsy & Joe...thank you both for continuing to serve my husband & me every time we are in town. We even look forward to buying special gifts for our two children as well! See you soon!! : )
