Wow. I rarely leave reviews but the experience I just had definitely warrants one. Ive been shopping at CityGate Wine & Spirits since shortly after they opened, mostly due to their convenient location next to Costco and despite their comparatively higher prices than their peers. I stopped in on Saturday to pick up some wine and other items for guests I was having over and they happened to be doing a tasting of Kerrygold Irish Cream. I wasnt necessarily in there to buy that item, but liked it and so picked up a bottle anyway from the stand along with my other items. It wasnt until I got home that I noticed the bottle had expired (it has cream in it) in 11/2016, three months ago! Needless to say, I was a little annoyed as this wasnt one that had gotten forgotten on their shelf but was one they had set out on the sample table, so this is something that should have been checked. Regardless, Ive been shopping there awhile and gave them the benefit of the doubt and so wanted to exchange it for a new one. When I arrived and explained the situation, I was immediately told by the cashier that no tasting of that item had occurred. He then asked when I had purchased the item (which was unopened), almost implying I had purchased it months ago. I presented my receipt and again said that the tasting had been the day of the purchase. He began to argue with me and say he "knew" their tasting schedule and no such event had occurred. He went to get his manager but at this point I was upset at his confrontational manner and accusation that I was lying about the tasting and told him I wanted to return the item. When the manager arrived, she was brusque and impersonal. Both of them acted like I was wasting their time, despite the store being devoid of any other customers. As they were returning the item, I again stated that I had done the tasting and, only as an afterthought, the manager said "Oh yeah, I know. He just forgot it happened." No apology, no attempt to offer to exchange the product for a similar brand, nothing. They could see from their rewards program that Ive spent a decent amount of money there and have never returned anything, so I have no idea why they had a nasty attitude and gave me a nasty treatment for their mistake. I wont be shopping there again.

Prices are on the high side. I went the first week they were opened and asked if they had any Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. The clerk brought a bottle up to the register for me and the manager came running up and said he couldnt sell it to me because they were saving it for a tasting event. I was disappointed but he said he would invite me. I gave him my business card and I never heard anything from him. Like I said, the prices are pretty high compared to other stores in the area. Probably not worth your time if you have a store you like already.

I really like this place. The staff has always been knowledgeable and friendly; and even though I only come in about once a month they treat me like a valued customer. Im not sure why some people say they have high prices - I comparison shop and have found that their prices are as cheap as the other "discount" places, and their selection is just as good too (at least for what I like, mainly whisky).
