Awhile back I asked BR to put together my bike, change out handlebars, and get my bike road ready. I had purchased a mint 70s drop frame Peugeot from Galaxy Bikes (SF/PDX). So coming into it, I knew I had conversion issues with an old French bike. I also had the confidence from Galaxy Bikes that the handlebar would fit in my original existing stem. BR gave me such a hard time about it. They got Rivendell Bikes involved bc thats where I purchased the handlebars. I received an email from some bike guru in CA at Rivendell telling me I need to listen to BR and buy a new stem. Other bike shops in the Crown Heights/Prospect Heights refused to help me once they heard the drama with BR. Well, last night a bike mechanic with no shop affiliation put my bike together, and the original stem fit my new handlebars. Moral of story, bike shops in gentrified neighborhoods like BR are the worst - which include 718 Cyclery and Bicycle Habitat or Bikesmith or whatever they call that place on Vanderbilt now (changed hands soo many times is a red flag). BICYCLE ROOTS and all these other bike shops ARE taking advantage of you telling to to purchase unnecessary parts. They ARE full of themselves. And I will never set foot in any of these pretentious shops again. BOO Bicycle Roots; go back to Ohio or wherever you came from with your childish anarchistic, yet money grubbing, and pretentious attitudes. YEA Danny from Galaxy Bikes. You truly know your bikes!

Came in for a partial assembly on what must have been their busiest day of the year (two days pre 5boro). Ok, I got it, youre busy. $75 for a PARTIAL assembly (brakes and pedals... Thats it) I was willing to eat. When the mechanic said soonest he could have it back was Thursday, (from Friday) and couldnt squeeze me in even though I need it for work, I declined. Waiting 6 days for an hour worth of work on top of that price, no. Maybe dont threaten a customer with being moved to the end of the line because generally when someone balks at a wait that means that project is not coming back at all so.... Ended up putting it together myself with a multi tool in about an hr moving at a snails pace (a real mechanic could have done it in 30 mins). Lacking in social graces, but I come for the expertise so Ill get over it if I actually NEED something. I tried to get the local shop feel out of the place, but alas. They stick to posted hours, so thats a plus. But yeah, knowing I have to wait to have my pockets raped was too much for me.

Bicycle Roots is a real, old-school, community bike shop. While theyve got fancy carbon road bikes and expensive lycra cycling gear, they also have a thoughtfully selected range of "regular" bikes for regular people. These guys dont just sell bikes, they really know bikes -- the co-owners are both experienced mechanics and youre likely as not to find them, wrench in hand, at the work stands in the service area at the back of the store. In fact theyre so good, I ride from the Upper West Side to Crown Heights to get work done on my bike (one of those fancy carbon ones!) The only thing that could possibly make the experience at Bicycle Roots any better would be the addition of an espresso machine!

I got a bike from Bicycle Roots in Crown Heights Brooklyn just before the summer, and brought it back for routine maintenance 2 weekends ago. When buying the bike the staff was polite and very helpful with making sure I got the right bike for how I ride. The bike was very comfy for commuting over the summer and did not break down so I am sure they did it right! I brought the bike back just to see if there was anything I should do before the winter to keep it in good shape for next spring and the staff was very knowledgeable and got everything set up nicely.

Very friendly and honest mechanics and staff, great timing and prices. After a negative experience in another bike shop (read my review on Excelsior Bikes), came here to tune two bikes and buy some accessories. One of the mechanics (Joe ) was very nice to talk to and after asking him about some upgrades I wanted perform on my bike he told me there were a couple if options and gave me some great ideas. Im really glad to have found this shop.

Definitely the best bike shop around. Super knowledgeable staff, the owner always seems to be there as well and she is also extremely knowledgeable about everything bike related. Quality products to choose from and prices are reasonable especially for the quality of service youre getting. They know what theyre doing! Id trust Bicycle Roots over any other bike shop hands down.

Been bringing my bike to this shop for repairs for almost a year. Everyone who works there is very knowledgeable, honest, and are gracious in when answering all my questions. They communicate clearly, set clear expectations for the time it will take to do a repair. My day is brightened going in there - will continue giving them my business.

Really great experience . Joe helped me find the right fitting bike and made all adjustments so it was ready to ride home that day. Everyone Ive dealt with here has been genuine, down to earth, and knowledgeable. Theres no pretension, and no pushy salesmanship. Highly recommend

I visited the shop just to browse. Its beautifully laid out and a great experience to be inside. I even told the staff that I was only there to browse, and they were still super nice and helpful and clearly very knowledgeable. I will definitely return. Thanks Bicycle Roots!

I came in 2 1/2hrs before closing on a Saturday with a shredded rear wheel thanks to a loose u-lock falling and taking out my back spokes. Joe replaced the wheel and had the bike riding better than before, and all in that same afternoon, saved my weekend. Thank you so much!

Really good customer service. I went there to get my breaks tuned, and they did a great job. The mechanics explained to me what the problem was and was very honest about what could need replacement in the future. Absolutely recommend.

Awesome, informative staff. As someone who commutes by bike year round, its great to have a shop in the neighborhood, and the shop is particularly tailored to us die-hards out there still on a bike in the winter months.

Way too expensive for what they do. Frequently suggest whole new parts instead of tune ups. Last time they fixed my bike the cords/wires (brand new at their suggestion) broke within a month.

They are quick to do repairs and are super well-informed. They will walk you through your choices and arent just looking to make a buck. Good community bike shop. And woman-owned, too.
