We had previously been using a different large pet supply retailer in Secaucus for grooming services (hint - their name also begins with "Pet"), and we loved them. The service was personalized and professional, and we never had an issue. However, we decided to give Petco in Totowa a try because since we moved to the area they are now closer to us than the place in Secaucus. I took our dog there twice, and each time the service was just OK. The first time, I had specifically asked for a teeth brushing, and when I picked him up it hadnt been done. When I asked they took him in the back and MAY have brushed his teeth, but I have no way of knowing (it seemed pretty quick). Im also not quite sure that they trimmed his nails. The gold star is that they didnt charge me for the teeth brushing because of their error... so that was nice. The second time I dropped him off, they said it would take about an hour and 20 minutes (which is just about right) and that they would call me when he was ready. They even verified my home number and I gave them my cell number since I knew Id be out running errands for awhile. Over two hours later I realized the time and still hadnt heard anything, so I called. There seemed to be some confusion, and finally someone was able to get the status of my dog and tell me that he was ready and waiting. I have no idea how long he was sitting around waiting to be picked up (but given he has short hair and doesnt need much maintenance, Im guessing it wasnt exactly 5 minutes). And Im guessing that whatever waiting area they have for the dogs isnt exactly spacious and comfortable. When I went to pick him up, he came out and looked/smelled great...but his leash was covered in a ton of light colored dog hair from somewhere - it literally looked like the leash had been sitting around on the floor of the grooming area. My dog is black, so I wasnt about to put the leash on him since it was only a matter of time before all of that hair ended up on him. The employee handed me the leash and was about to go back into another room when I pointed it out and asked him to clean the leash off (how could someone not notice a ton of light colored hair on a black leash?) They also didnt leash my dog before they brought him out to the main grooming waiting area, so when the door opened he ran right out (hes initially hyper and excited when he sees me). He would have gotten out into the main store area (and possibly outside the store altogether, since the exit door was right there) if I hadnt been right there to grab his collar (another safety issue is that the door leading to the grooming salon swings out, so a dog his size could easily jump on the door and open it quite easily). All this to say that compared to the service we got at the other place in Secaucus that also starts with "Pet", the Petco operation seems a bit disorganized and lacks some of the extra professional touches that I would expect them to have if they are supposed to be competing with the other big-box pet chain. I would normally say that you get what you pay for, but the prices between both places are very similar; Petco doesnt cost any less. I will continue driving further to take our dog to the Secaucus location, or else try out the services at the same retailers Wayne location. But Petco is a no. Ill stick to Petco for food and toys.

PETCO GROOMING REVIEW Took my 2 yorkies to Petco yesterday for grooming package and tooth brushing after being disappointed at the other big store that also starts with "PET" ;) Al was the groomer and from the very beginning, the service was leaps and bounds above that other store. He was extremely professional and was welcoming to both my dogs and me, explained everything he would do and accepted a suggestion I made (!). Unlike the other store, where I walked away uncertain of what was going to be done and returned to find my dogs completely shaven down, with cuts near their eyes where their eye discharge appeared to have been torn/shaved off and, to add insult to injury, flea-infested. Back to Petco, I was VERY satisfied when I returned to find my dogs happy and well groomed and smelling great! Their teeth were nicely brushed and their nails were clipped with no boo-boos. Al even said they were very well behaved dogs, which made me feel good. The whole process was painless and I will definitely be returning again. Thanks Al!

Im an owner of 3 Yorkshire terrier, better known as finicky eaters. My dogs got well adjusted to eating "Hills: Ideal Balance" which is now being discontinued, so Ive been on the hunt for dog food for my THREE DOGS. I was told by a Petco employee from several locations that if my dogs did not like the food, I wouldnt need to go back and forth to Petco, that I could just throw the food out and hold on to the cans and the receipt. I went to this store and I explained to the cashier the whole scenario and the cashier completely embarrassed me and denied my return, said that I need to keep 50% of the food in the containers even if its spoiled. Which i could have done but since I was informed from several employees from several locations that I can just bring in the empty cans and the original receipt thats why my containers were empty....Im a very upset consumer

Ive been considering adding a Conure to our family but havent decided between a greencheeked or sun conure. My 12yo will soon be 13 and thought it was the perfect chance to make such a big purchase for our new pet. While getting some supplies we came across Pepito, who seemed docile and friendly. We asked for assistance to meet the bird to help decide. We were met with an eye rolling employee who did nothing but point out every negative aspect and never thought to ask if we may have had experience with a bird or if weve read up on its care but carried on as if we were ignorant and clueless. When I asked to see him we were told no but if we purchased it can be returned BUT that will cause great stress to the bird. Which is why some interaction would have helped make the decision. We left the store disappointed and annoyed.

I brought my dog, Petey (not easy to groom), to Petco on 46. I was over the top nervous and I dont like the idea of leaving him ANYWHERE. Joe, one of the groomers, was AMAZING! He was so professional and understanding of mine and my dogs needs. He did a wonderful job grooming Petey AND he did a wonderful job calming me down! I will recommend Joe to EVERYONE looking for a professional groomer who really cares about customer service, both human and k-9!! Thank you, Joe!!

Just an average big box store for pet supplies. They should not be allowed to sell live stock as the staff is rather uneducated. They know little about fish, ferrets, snakes & birds. Selling the supplies is good but if selling live stock that either need a reptile specialist, fish specialist, bird and rodent specialist. If they do actually know or have some experience they play it off like they dont know or dont want to be bothered.
