I love donuts! I especially love unusual flavored donuts! Ive been wanting to try Strange donuts since they opened, but hadnt gotten around to it. But, after it (and its gooey butter donut) was suggested to me by a donut shop blogger I made a trip out to get some strange donuts for my Sunday morning. I arrived and read the list of donuts written on the chalkboard. Since there is NO DESCRIPTIONS in sight I selected on name - PB&J and Heaths Ledger. The male employee behind the counter first tries to force a high five on me getting in my face and shouting, "Hey dude, high five!" I declined the high five and asked for my selected donuts and several others that are all listed on the CHALKBOARD menu, but this rude female employee says they DONT HAVE ANY OF THEM and looks at me impatiently as if I should know this already. These employees were UNFRIENDLY. Even the offered high five was ABRASIVE AND UNWELCOMING. It was as if they wanted me to be uncomfortable - Is that the STRANGE part? As for their donuts taste, I tried a jelly donut and an elvis donut (banana filling with peanut butter and chocolate glaze and chocolate sprinkles - sounds good) and they were no better in taste than a gas station donut. I was really unimpressed at $2 per donut. The banana filling in the Elvis donut tasted like box banana pudding and I wish the chocolate glaze covered more than just a small corner of the donut because the best bites were that little corner with the chocolate/pb/and banana combo. THIS PLACE IS ALL HYPE AND NO HEART!

Go to Strange for the experience, not the donuts necessarily. Its a fun place, and theyve done a GREAT job marketing which keeps you coming back every weekend for the newest "stranger". They keep it elusive with the "9pm til sold out" hours. Its all about the experience here. I realized early on that, while not the best donuts in the world, I keep on going back for some reason. Why is that? Its because they make you feel like you just HAVE TO GO every week! They are great at pumping you up via social media and when you get there its just so exciting to wait in a line and HOPE they still have what you want by the time you get there. Its all about supply and demand. Im never "let down" by the donuts, but by now I just know what Im getting with strange. The "strangers" are hit or miss. They make really great cake donuts, but there traditional yeast donuts are a must-skip. Nothing beats a warm Krispy Kreme original glazed... nothing. I have had a few that I just love there, snickerdoodle, strawberry-filled with chocolate on the top... mostly I just go to try something new and vibe of the atmosphere. I think they have a great idea and a great brand, just maybe need to hone in on perfecting the recipes a bit, having a bit less dry, moist delicious donuts. All in all, Ill keep going back and supporting this business because I love the concept and their drive!

Overpriced for donuts that have a few unusual flavors. The Fat Steve and Rainbow Pony (which are not unusual flavors) are usually pretty good, but some of the others are dry and stale tasting even though I know they were just made. The maple bacon that they made when they first opened was really good and they changed it, now, not so good, the pumpkin donut very blah. The girl behind the counter is always very nice. Also not impressed with the coffee either, a few times I had to return it and one time it was clear that it pissed off one of the guys as he told me the coffee was fine, it wasnt. I think they are a lot of hype and I want them to do well in Maplewood but sometimes those donuts are not very tasty. For all that hype you gotta be consistent. St Louis periodicals has a bad habit of writing up anything new that comes along as if it is the greatest thing and that leads to disappointment.

Strange is one of my favorite places in St. Louis, PERIOD. Theyve redefined the donut industry with their atmosphere. I suggest getting to their location early. Its a popular spot, and their donuts are not unlimited. The weekends are a great time to go. Their "Stranger" of the week is a donut fused with some other food from a local eatery. Sometimes they sound disgusting, but end up being one of my favorites. I highly suggest the Blueberry Cheesecake or Mexican Hot Chocolate dones. Their donuts are generally seasonal and the menu changes monthly, so you may not get a Mexican Hot Chocolate until winter time, but its my favorite by far. Their coffee is roasted by Kaldis Coffee. GET THIS COFFEE. I consider myself a coffee snob and, I have to tell you, I buy a bag of these whole beans the moment I run out. It has an incredible flavor.

My friend and I had a great laugh at how average these overhyped donuts were. We arrived pretty early in the day but were still told that the selection was slim due to us showing up so late.....? Im not too crazy about the shop as theres nowhere to sit down and eat your overpriced flour, however the employees were awesome and very friendly. Perhaps too friendly as they stopped a dog owner from tying his dog to a lamp post outside and encouraged him to bring the dog into the shop. I love dogs to my core, but I never want to find a dog in my donut that would be traumatizing albeit cute. The hunt for the worlds best donuts will never end at strange donuts; a previous reviewers comparison to gas station donuts was ridiculously accurate.

This is not just a donut shop, this is an experience. First, follow these peeps on Instagram @strangedonuts, then set aside your Thursday night and make it a party. Thursday nights are when they introduce "strangers," which are their amazingly fun donut creations. These creations are concocted usually after they partner with a St. Louis-area restaurant and even though the names may sound strange, its worth going and giving them a taste because they are usually DEElicious. Strange Donuts makes super moist, cakey perfectly flavored regular donuts as well on every day of the week, so stop by and grab a Fat Elvis, Majestic Unicorn, Gooey Butter or Logo Done - theres a Strange Donut for EVERYONE!

Conceptually, this place is very unique and trendy. They have some really interesting and often superb flavor combinations. Their raised donuts have a very good texture, with excellent balance between firmness and softness. The cake donuts have a decent texture: the chocolate ones tend to have a little moisture, while the vanilla ones which they build many of their creations/strangers on top of tend to be really dry and flavorless. They allow the excellence of the toppings to dominate, but Id like to see them put a little more effort into the heart of the donut, which is the DOUGH! Despite this critique, Ive had enough excellent donuts here to give them a well-deserved 4 stars!

Went on a Thursday night and tried the gooey butter donut and the pumpkin donut. The gooey butter donut tasted like popcorn butter, and some of my friends hated it while others thought it was really tasty. The pumpkin donut was good, but fairly standard. For "Strange" donuts though, I was expecting more strange concoctions. Basically all the donuts were cake donuts, and the ones that we did try were okay, but not insanely good or original. Most of them turned out to be just donuts with some random stuff on top. Didnt get to try the chicken donut being a vegetarian. :( But that one looked interesting.
