I was a customer of the Potomac Giant from the time it opened until recently, when I changed to the new Harris Teeter store. What do I like about it? I had to like a lot about it to leave a store where Ive been shopping for 20 years, where a lot of the employees seem like old friends. But the Giant is not the store it used to be--there are no meat cutters in the meat department any more, so you cant get custom cuts. And if you contact their customer service department with a complaint, they wont even reply. I suppose thats their way of reducing the number of complaints! I left after a session of rotten treatment at the pharmacy, that IMHO is poorly managed and something to stay away from. I waited 20 minutes for them to give me a flu shot, then gave up and left. I went to Harris Teeter, where the pharmacist meets customers, not a clerk, and told him I wanted a flu shot. He took my information, entered it into the computer, and gave me the shot in about five minutes. And he gave me a $5 gift coupon for doing so! I decided that this was my pharmacy. So I transferred my refillable prescription to Harris Teeter, and they gave me a $25 gift coupon! Good deal. What do I like about the store? First, its open 24 hours. So if youre cooking late and need that key ingredient, theyre open. They have stupendous BOGOs every week, so you can get things like sirloin steak and bacon and the like at half price. They have a real butcher shop, so things can get cut for you and all the other things that real butchers do. The fresh veggies are much better than the Potomac Giant--I can always get baby bok choy there, for example, and its excellent. The bread bakery is a real standout. They prepare a great variety of breads on-site, and theyre good. They have two delicious whole-wheat offerings, some of the best whole-wheat I can find in the DC area. But what motivates this review is a problem I had recently at Harris Teeter. A long time ago I attended a lecture about communications equipment, and the designer who gave the talk said that "Its how things work when they dont work thats really important." He meant that you want communications equipment to be designed so that you can diagnose and repair failures, but I think its true for supermarkets too. I tried to buy some sausage casings so that I can make boudin blanc, a French white sausage, for New Years. The heat of the meat department wouldnt sell it to me. So I went to the customer service desk, and two customer service reps went to him; he told each of them a different story (both lies, I believe) but the answer was the same. Then the store manager did the same thing for me, with the same result. So I used their Web site and complained. They have it, its food, why not sell it to me? I got an email the next day apologizing, telling me that they were resolving the issue. Then I got a call from the store director, the overall manager of the whole place, who said that he wasnt in when I tried to buy sausage casings, but if he had the matter "would have been resolved differently." He said that my sausage casings were all ready for me to pick up any time I chose to come in. 24 hours from a Web complaint to the local store director making a personal call! Hows that for service? Compare that with what happens when you contact Giant--which is absolutely nothing--and the comparison is even more stark. Of course, youre unlikely to buy sausage casings, but you can see that even an unusual request is likely to be accommodated. You can see the posture of the company--they want to take care of you. This is long, and I apologize for it. But ones dealings with ones supermarket are complicated, so I thought the length was needed.

The quality and appearance of the Harris Teeter in Park Potomac is declining rapidly. They cant seem to keep their produce section stocked, and seem to regularly run out of staples such as bananas and broccoli. No one seems to make any effort to keep the shelves organized, and its typical to find things strewn about throughout the store. They seem to be focusing more on selling specialty items like firewood and patio furnishings, and less on groceries. The store is also just plain dirty! They seem to sweep the floors and empty the trash on a schedule, not when it needs it. So at 6PM on a weeknight, the floors were covered with dirt and trash, and the trash pails next to the areas where they provide free samples were overflowing. The staff is quite friendly, but the management seems to believe the only response to any question or concern is "Im sorry!" followed by an explanation of why it isnt their fault (e.g. we had a lot of people shopping today, or corporate didnt send us enough produce again). I have no doubt that they are sincerely sorry, but I dont want to have to go to multiple grocery stores just to get basic items.

I come here a lot, we order pizzas, subs and friedchicken at least 3-4 times a week as well buy groceries here (as well as at Park Potomac). Our business is catty corner from them. The employees are great and the stock is usually kept up, but a couple of complaints. Parking spaces are smallish and the whole parking lot is pitched downhill. Outside Ive seen a number of individuals leave carts which then wander off and smash into someone elses car. I have to park my diesel pick up outside since the clearance of the inside lot isnt high enough. The checkouts leave something to be desired. The lines are horrifically long almost all the time mainly because of lack of self-checkout. Upstairs is pretty long as well (especially at lunch). Park Potomac in comparison has much more staff on checkout in addition to self-check out which speeds people along.

Im a fan of the Harris Teeter chain except this location. I only come here coz its open all night. But Lord help you if you come here after midnight. They have just the ONE checkout lane open! The self checkout counters are closed! So you have to stand in line to get thru checkout. Would be better if they keep the self checkout open and use that one employee to monitor the lanes! Also, parking is a pain too since it is shared with the other retail and restaurants in the area.

Customer Service is mostly good (except at the bakery and sandwich making section), sales prices are great, fruit sometimes could be fresher and may have a bit of fruit flies around :/, sushi is varied, fairly fresh and original, meat selection is good, good sales on seafood - though make sure you check its freshness as I bought some shrimp that smelled really bad the next day after purchase.
