Gamers stores overall have gone downhill. They used to have great prices that were much more competitive with their huge chain store competitor Gamestop. I remember back in High School I could buy a game that was still very new, that someone else had traded in as used for something like $37 to $38. Now they want $55 for the newer used games. Then when you start looking at retro games its a toss up. Sometimes they have a great price, and other times theyre a 100% over the going market rate for a game or even some peripherals or systems. Last year I went into the Clocktower store and bought a used copy (cartridge only) of Chrono Trigger for the SNES from them. They were asking $149.99 for the game. I knew the going rate on Ebay for a cartridge only copy of the game was $75 to $80 and I told them thats what I would pay for the game. At first the manager was a little reluctant but then he looked in the system to see what he had paid the person who traded in the game and decided to take my offer. Just yesterday I went into the store looking for N64 games. I saw they had a copy of Super Smash Bros. The going rate for a cartridge only copy of Smash Brothers is currently $40-$45. Gamers wanted $59.99. I imagine they paid the previous owner something along the lines of $15-$20 for it and theyre trying to turn a $40.00 profit on it. I offered them $40 for it and the employee said the prices are firm and that they cannot change them. I found that funny considering the fact I had bought Chrono Trigger there before and they had no issue giving me the realistic price. So its kind of sad really, that Gamers has gone downhill. I used to frequent the Southside DSM store pretty often, to the point I knew the names of the employees and they knew who I was. The prices used to be much fairer and actually they beat Gamestop on nearly everything, but now theyre worse than even Gamestop when it comes to the newer generation games, and theyve literally priced the classic stuff, and rarer games so high that only a doofus that had no idea what they were doing would pay their asking price. I still like Gamers, occasionally I can find a decent price on a used game but I dont see their business lasting too much longer with their prices seemingly on the rise.

I received a Wii game for Christmas that was purchased at the Gamers in Iowa City. At the time, it was one of the best selling games in the country, but it just wasnt my style. It was still factory sealed and I had the store receipt. When my brother in law purchased it they told him there wouldnt be any problem exchanging it if I had the receipt. When I went to take it back at the store in Des Moines where I go to school, they said they dont accept returns on Christmas merchandise after Jan 17th. I spent Christmas break in Davenport, where there isnt a gamers. Had I known about this "policy" I might have made the two hour round trip drive to Iowa City to return it. As it was, I didnt even return to Des Moines by the 17th. The funny thing was that the kids working at the store were about to return it until the assistant manager told them not to. They knew it was a stupid policy. Any other store would have taken it back so long as it was sealed and accompanied by a receipt. I called the regional manager and complained. He said it cost them too much money to restock a game. Keep in mind I had every intention of exchanging it for a game of the same price. He told me they would "buy" it back from me, for the bargain price of half what it cost a month before (and half what they were selling it for at the time). I pretty much equate that to theft. I told him what I thought of the way his company did business and took the game to Wal-Mart where they returned the sealed game without a receipt, no questions asked. I felt a little bad about it, but Wal-Mart lost nothing in the exchange for an equally priced game, just like Gamers wouldnt have. Say what you want about Wal-Mart, but I was able to get some satisfaction out of the situation. My only regret is that Gamers still made $50 on the deal.

Easily put this was the worst customer service Ive ever received. Long story short I bought a pre owned Xbox power brick because mine was going bad. When I got the Gamers purchased brick home it was defective in the same exact way so I decided to return it. When I went to return it- the manager- Jamie Cole- accused me of switching their upc sticker to another unit as they would have never sold me a defective unit and accused me of lying to them and trying to return a brick that was not purchased there. I tried to reason with him and show him the sticker was perfectly intact and that I had no need to try and cheat the company out of $50 but he would not even listen and continued to be very hostile and accuse me of lying. Jamie told me the one he helped me originally (which he was there but not the person who helped me) and the unit they sold me had plastic on it and thats how he knew it wasnt. He then proceeded to tell me he couldnt take it on return or exchange because that wasnt the brick he sold me. Ive never in my life had my integrity challenged this way and been more offended. I explained to him I dont need $50 bad enough to take one of my only nights off, be away from my wife and son, and try to rip them off. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs- this behavior shouldnt not be tolerated in any professional setting. I gave this company a month to reach out to me and attempt to resolve this before posting this negative review. I asked Jamie to have someone call me and also called the customer service number Jamie gave me and left a message. No one ever reached out to me- not once! Businesses that operate this way should not be allowed to take advantage of people. AVOID AVOID!

So this Gamers was the prime location to get anything game related, about a year ago I would inside and the employees were pretty awesome guys, though the area itself felt very disorganized out on the floor. The games were pretty much all over the place along with the awkwardness of how everything was positioned to actually find what you are looking. I didnt really think much about it because the employees themselves were pretty helpful in my opinion, but it was quite noticeable when you walk in. It was a few months later when I was interested in buying another game, and I walked in to a cleaner more organized floor which was very pleasing to the eye. A new guy named Will who is the new management of the place definitely made an impact of the place, Ive always thought that the employees here were pretty helpful and fun to speak with, but now with the new management, the atmosphere feels organized and welcoming along with the helpful employees of Gamers. Kudos to Will for stepping up and taking the reigns so that their customers feel like they are worth the effort.
